I am a novice level editor. I used Pixlr online editor. First, I cropped the photo so it is more focused on the eyes and more off center so it's not so locked up. I then duplicated another layer on top of the original, unsaturated it, and used the eraser tool to color splash the eyes. The subject's eyes are a gorgeous green blue color so I wanted to bring that out as much as possible. I adjusted the red, blue, and green hues as well as the exposure to achieve the vibrance of color I wanted. To intensify the darks and shadows against the lighter areas I applied a slight vignette and used an inverted pastel filter. These edits bring much more of an instant focus on the eyes which was the overall goal of this edit. It gives a more intense look and adds some suspense to the determined look in her eyes.

Speedlight fired through a small hole in card from the back, fill light from the right is a desklamp through a pillowcase. Occasional third light is a keyring led torch (secondary shadows in top-right and upper line of speculars in the leaning egg cup on the bottom row).
There is no fill in the top-left. In the top-right the pillow case was just hung over a chair, hence the abrupt stop on the front of the nearer cup. For the bottom row i hung a couple of pillow cases over a clothes horse, which evened things out, but i don't think it's bright enough.
I resisted the urge to boost these in photoshop. Will hopefully reshoot at the weekend.
The markets in South America are such great colourful places and they sell every single thing you could possibly want. This was my last stop in Merida, Mexico and unlike in Bolivia the local people were happy to be photographed which made this assignment easier than usual!

When it comes to your portraits, I love your soft focus and close framing, which helps to reveal the inner spirit of your subjects. Undoubtedly, your work was separate from the rest at that time, and I love how you weren't going to bend your creativity to care for others. Your vision was also exceptional, understanding that you wouldn't simply stick with it if you didn't get it right the first time. Overall, it is clear that in your portraits, you criticized emotional expression over technical precision, which is why your work is still so relevant today.
From my perspective, when you photograph another person, you capture an intimate snapshot of them in that moment. Not just their appearance gets captured but also their mood, essence, history, and, most importantly, vulnerability. When talented photographers like yourself conduct portraits, such as when you capture the sadness behind the eyes, you are able to successfully capture their soul. However, it is essential to recognize that the soul is dynamic, so it will never be possible to capture it throughout the transcendence of time, but good photographers can be better than a mirror.
