And you don't get to see how colossal this arc is if you don't get closer -- and how small the people are compared to its structure.

This is Arc of Triumph, built by Napoleon Bonaparte. One of the most famous landmarks in the world. Inspired by Rome's arc of Titus (see my previous posts). It was built for the victories of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The monuments stands to almost 50 meters tall, and about 45 meters wide. Beneath it is a tomb of an unknown soldier killed in the first world War.

It is also a significant land mark of the Tour de France which ends Sunday. The last stage end in the avenue where this arc is located.

Arc de Triomphe

Avenue des Champs-Élysées

Paris, France

The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as the "Place de l'Étoile". It is at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. The triumphal arch honors those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. On the inside and the top of the arc there are all of the names of generals and wars fought. Underneath is the tomb of the unknown soldier from World War I. (Axe historique) a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares on a route which goes from the courtyard of the Louvre Palace to the outskirts of Paris. The monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, and its iconographic program pitted heroically nude French youths against bearded Germanic warriors in chain mail and set the tone for public monuments, with triumphant nationalistic messages, until World War I.

Nearly the same one, as before.

Looking down on the Arc de Triomphe from the top of the Eiffel Tower. The curving, tree-lined thoroughfare leading toward it is the Avenue d'Iena, named for Napoleon's victory at Jena in modern Germany.

So much detail, so little time - almost underneath the Arc de Triomphe.

The Arc De Triomphe was definitely a site to behold. Right in the middle of the busiest road in Paris, traffic was worst than anything I had ever seen. Cars going in 5 different directions all at once, people beeping their horns. It was insane.

The Arc is one of the most famous monuments in France. Construction was started by Napoleon to celebrate his war victory. Never finished before his death, it would later be finished by King Louis-Philippe between 1833- & 1836.

A nice 3/4 shot.(at least I think so) (again color coordination problems are due to my part selection)

An arc eye hawkfish ( Paracirrhites arcatus) waiting for dinner ,,, sitting on a bed of fire coral. Usually these also have a flash of white along the side of the body.

From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkfish

"Because of their large, skinless pectoral fins, hawkfishes are able to perch upon fire corals without incurring harm. Actually hydrozoans rather than true corals, fire corals possess stinging cells (nematocysts), which would normally prevent close contact. Afforded some degree of protection by their living perches, hawkfishes seek the high ground of the reef, where they warily survey their surroundings like hawks. This is said to have inspired their common name".

Thanks to Van for the inspiration.
