The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, France, standing at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly named Place de l'Étoile—the étoile or "star" of the juncture formed by its twelve radiating avenues.

In memory our heroes will never be forgotten

During the recent (10/10/24) geomagnetic storm and associated aurora event, we noticed a band of red rising from the west that was stationary, quite different from the pillars of color moving across the northern sky. This red band appears to have been a rare appearance of a stable auroral red (SAR) arc.

Unlike the aurora which are generated by solar particles raining down on Earth's atmosphere, SAR are generated by extreme thermal and kinetic heating from energy conducted from the magnetic/ electrical field around Earth to the ionosphere, the outermost atmospheric layer. SAR arcs appear as relatively stationary east-west arcs.

Note the two radio antennae in the foreground, part of a NOAA installation north of Boulder Colorado, as well as the Milky Way cutting across the bottom of the SAR.

Architekt war Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas.

The Arc de Triomf (Catalan for triumphal arch) was the main entrance gate for the 1888 World Exhibition in Barcelona. The architect was Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas.

It is located at the northeast end of Barcelona's old town at the beginning of the wide promenade Passeig de Lluís Companys, which leads to the Parc de la Ciutadella. This park hosted the 1888 World Exhibition.

The arch was built in reddish brick in the Neo-Mudejar style. It is about 30 meters high. The front frieze shows the stone sculpture Barcelona rep les nacions (Catalan for "Barcelona receives the nations") by Josep Reynés. The opposite frieze shows a stone carving called Recompense, one of the first works by Josep Llimona. Both works cost 3,270 pesetas each at the time.

The upper part of the arch is decorated with the coats of arms of Barcelona and all Spanish provinces. This work is by Torquat Tassó and Antoni Vilanova.

The cranes around the structure were a little bit of a disappointment - especially when we visited the monument itself.

The construction was due to the preparations for the monument to be wrapped - which it currently is for another week.

The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.

A major tourist attraction today the Arc de Constantine commemorates the ruler of a reunited Rome in 324 AD known as Constantine the Great. When the western empire fell the eastern empire remained a stronghold of Roman power and took the name Constantinople in modern day turkey today known as Istanbul.

A hill I've been up many times using different routes and in different weathers. However Loch Skeen always looks its best when there is some snow on the hills. Sunlight was in short supply this day but the lochs graced here by an arc of light.

As each wave came into shore it formed an arc matching the adjacent coastline. I’d already chosen my foreground interest it was now down to timing the right wave. Sometimes photography is so hypnotic.

Finally, after weeks of almost daily rain, the good weather returns. But this morning there were still a few showers, which combined with the sun, offered this beautiful rainbow and this superb light.

Located on the former Place de l'Étoile (Star square), now Place Charles de Gaulle, named after the twelve avenues that surround the monument and form a star, the Arc de Triomphe was built on Napoléon demand after the famous battle of Austerlitz (1805) , considered as his military masterpiece.
