Sandhamn (Swedish for "Sand Harbour") is a small settlement in the central-peripheral part of the Stockholm Archipelago in central-eastern Sweden, approximately 50 km (30 mi) east of Stockholm. Sandhamn is located on the island Sandön ("Sand Island"), which is, however, colloquially referred to as Sandhamn.

One of the most important natural ports in the archipelago with easy access to the Swedish capital, Sandhamn has been popular for pleasure boating since the late 19th century. It is known for its tavern, its clubhouse, and its harbour.

The island is approximately 9 km (5.6 mi) long and 6 km (3.7 mi) and consists mostly of sand and is dominated by beaches, dunes and especially pine forests.

Sandhamn receives an additional 100,000 visitors annually.

"Viveca Stens" popular novels come to life in "The Sandhamn Murders", a perfect mix of Nordic crime & the beautiful surroundings of the outer Stockholm archipelago.

The Stockholm archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea (the largest being across the Baltic in Finland).

Today the archipelago is a popular holiday destination with some 50,000 holiday cottages (owned mainly by Stockholmers). Visiting the larger islands in the archipelago is easy all year round, but during winter period the routes depend on the ice conditions. Several companies have regular routes.

Kuzova Archipelago

Hello, hope that you are well. We had an amazing time in Sweden and spent a day at the Archipelagos a couple of hours away from Gothenberg. No cars are allowed on the Islands and the only way to get around is by foot or bicycle, or course we took the easy option to see as much as we could in a day.

Expensive, but oh so worth it. I will catch up with your streams this evening.

Lofoten is an archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. Lofoten is known for it's beautiful scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, fishing villages and spectactular coast with sheltered bays and sand beaches. Though lying more than 100 km within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the world's largest variation in temperature relative to its high latitude. While I was there the temperature topped 24 degrees C.

Many poets, authors and artists have been influenced and fascinated by the Stockholm Archipelago. Among them are August Strindberg, Ture Nerman, Roland Svensson, Ernst Didring and Aleister Crowley.

The inhabitants in the archipelago from around mid 1400 up to the time when the second world war ended, were combined farmers and fishermen. The fishing in the outer archipelago was quite intensive during springtime and autumn during 1450 until mid 1800, and a lot of fishermen lived for long periods in the outer islands because of the long distance to their permanent houses in the inner archipelago. The combined farming and fishing culture lasted until around 1950-1955 when the younger generation, born during and directly after the war started to leave the archipelago and look for jobs in the cities on the main land. Today most of the small farms on the islands are closed and the fish industry has almost disappeared.

The town of Vaxholm was established in 1558, when King Gustav Vasa bought some farms from Count Per Brahe the Elder.

In the 1880s, it became a popular spa town, and many wooded summer houses were built by people from Stockholm.

It was not until 1912 that it allowed houses to be built from materials other than wood, giving the town a distinctive appearance.
