A series of typical shapes of Lofoten.
Lofoten is an archipelago and a traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. Lofoten has distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. Its largest town, Leknes, is approximately 169 km (105 mi) inside the Arctic Circle and approximately 2,420 km (1,500 mi) away from the North Pole, making Lofoten one of the world's northernmost populated regions. Though lying within the Arctic Circle, the archipelago experiences one of the world's largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude.
Lofoten (Old Norse: Lófót) was the original name of the island Vestvågøya. The first element is ló (i.e., "lynx") and the last element is derived from Norse fótr (i.e., "foot"), as the shape of the island must have been compared with that of a lynx's foot. (The old name of the neighbouring island Flakstadøya was Vargfót, "wolf's foot", from vargr "wolf".)
Lofotr was originally the name of the island of Vestvågøy only. Later it became the name of the chain of islands. The chain of islands with its pointed peaks looks like a lynx foot from the mainland. In Norwegian, it is always a singular. Another name one might come across, is "Lofotveggen" or the Lofoten wall. The archipelago looks like a closed wall when seen from elevated points around Bodø or when arriving from the sea, some 100 kilometres (62 miles) long, and 800–1,000 metres (2,600–3,300 feet) high.

A lot of boats out in the Stockholm archipelago depart from Gåshaga brygga, the end station of Lidingöbanan.
The Stockholm archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea. The archipelago extends from Stockholm roughly 60 kilometres (37 mi) to the east.
Today the archipelago is a popular holiday destination with some 50,000 holiday cottages (owned mainly by Stockholmers). Boating is an extremely popular activity.

Koh Lipe is the southernmost island of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. It is part of the Adang-Rawi archipelago. This archipelago forms, together with the Tarutao archipelago, the National Park Koh Tarutao. The Chao Lay live on the island. This is a tribe that lives mainly on the islands in the Andaman Sea. There is a public school on Koh lipe. Public schools are administered by the government. The Baan Koh Adang school is een Elementary school. Education in Thailand mandates nine years of basic education (six years of elementary school and three years of lower secondary school). Education at public schools is free until grade 9. The government provides, in addition, three years of free pre-school and three years of free upper-secondary education. Although Koh Lipe is part of a national park, the inhabitants are only allowed to develop part of the island for tourism. All other islands is prohibit. On the car-free island there are a few narrow roads that connect the beaches, because that is what it is all about: enjoying the sun, sea and beach.
Koh Lipe is a small island in the Southern part of the Thai Andaman Sea. It is famous for it's white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and bountyful marine life. The main transport hub for Koh Lipe is Pak Bara with daily speedboats boats running all year. This cluster of islands is part of the much larger Tarutao National Marine Park, a nature reserve established in 1974 as Thailand’s second National Park. It consists of about 50 islands and covers 1500 km². We visit Koh Lipe in the low season. On the island there is an Elementary school. The Baan Koh Adang school is located near the sunrise beach. The teacher is checking the work of the young students.
For World Oceans Day, the Copernicus Sentinel-3A satellite takes us over the Atlantic Ocean and the Republic of Cabo Verde.
Several of the small islands that make up the archipelago of Cabo Verde can be seen peeking out from beneath the clouds. These volcanic islands lie in the Atlantic Ocean about 570 km off the west coast of Senegal and Mauritania, which frame the image on the right.
The most striking thing about this image, however, is the dust and sand being carried by the wind towards Cabo Verde from Africa. The sand comes mainly from the Sahara and Sahel region. Owing to Cabo Verde’s position and the trade winds, these storms are not uncommon and can disrupt air traffic.
However, this sand also fertilises the ocean with nutrients and promotes the growth of phytoplankton, which are microscopic plants that sustain the marine food web. The iron in the dust is particularly important. Without iron mammals cannot make haemoglobin to transport oxygen around the bloodstream and plants cannot make chlorophyll to photosynthesise. Research has shown that around 80% of iron in samples of water taken across the North Atlantic originates from the Sahara. It can be assumed, therefore, that life in the deep ocean depends on this delivery of fertiliser from one of the world’s most parched regions.
World Oceans Day takes place on 8 June each year and celebrates the ocean, its importance in all our lives, and how we can protect it.

The town of Vaxholm was established in 1558, when King Gustav Vasa bought some farms from Count Per Brahe the Elder.
In the 1880s, it became a popular spa town, and many wooded summer houses were built by people from Stockholm.
It was not until 1912 that it allowed houses to be built from materials other than wood, giving the town a distinctive appearance.

Taken on an Apple iPhone 7 in Canary Wharf, this photograph is part of my long term exploration of the changing face of London's built environment in the context of the city's epic redevelopment by global corporate capital. The latter has favoured a functional, easily translatable architectural style that can be disorienting to those living and working in its buildings and open spaces due to the erasure of a sense of place or cultural traditions. It is difficult to place the two figures traversing the frame of this composition. Are they in London, Frankfurt, or Shanghai?

Waxholms Hotell. Built in 1901.
Vaxholm is the closest archipelago island to Stockholm and thus provides a charming taster to this extraordinary diverse array of pine-clad islands and islets. Vaxholm is more than just a gateway, however, with cobbled sloping streets flanked by well-preserved wooden houses painted in candy coloured pastels, plus a slew of excellent restaurant and idiosyncratic small family-owned shops, it holds its own as a charming place to visit.
Morning sun comes to the Andes of Tierra del Fuego. Tierra del Fuego or "Land of Fire," is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of South America across the Strait of Magellan. It is divided between Argentina and Chile. It includes Cape Horn and Ushuaia, and is the launching point for many Antarctic excursions. This shot was taken from the Beagle Channel as our ship approached Ushuaia in the morning.

Isle Royale National Park is more than an island, it's an archipelago.
Here are some outlying islands appearing in the fog while we wait for our boat at Malone Bay. The image required quite a bit of processing, so HSS!
