Compared to the other munros I tackled during my vacations, Ben Lawers was by far the easiest to climb. Nonetheless it was fun too and an enjoyable walk.

We took a boat from Elounda to the island of Spinalonga, a very pleasant trip in its own right. Nowadays the island is best known as the setting for Victoris Hislop's novel 'The Island' based on an island leper colony.
As this view clearly shows the island was not originally intended as a leper colony. The Venetians occupied the area from the 13th to the 17th centuries. (It is probably no coincedence that the island of Guidecca in Venice was also known as Spinalunga). The shallow seas in Elounda bay were ideally for the production of salt and Spinalonga island had a key strategic position at the entrance to the bay.
In the 16th century the Ottoman Turks began to take a keen interest in the area so the Venetians decided to fortify the island using the latest techniques. This including building two Mezzaluna Bastions, one at each end of the island, plus high defensive walls where there were no natural cliffs.
The fortifications proved to be very effective as the Turks invaded the island of Crete in 1645 but Spinalonga did not surrender to them for another 60 years.
The final Turkish inhabitants left in 1903 when the island was designated a leper colony. In what now seems a rather barbaric approach, people with leprosy were transferred to from the main island to Spinalonga, provided with a small allowance and left to their own devices. However, at that time there was no known cure for leprosy and it was thought to be highly contagious.
Conditions for the inhabitants changed for the better after 1930 when a law student, Epameinondas Remoundakis, was sent to the island. He started a process of establishing a more 'normal' lifestyle on the island encouraging people to help each other and work to provide more creature comforts. In time a cafe, cinema, theatre and even a small church were established. People also fell in love, married and had children, some of whom grew up on the island without ever catching the disease.
In 1948 a cure for leprosy was discovered and the inhabitants gradually left until the colony was finally closed in 1957.

This Skimmer sighting was my favorite coup for this FL trip. While I have seen this species at a distance several times prior, this was the first opportunity to get close. The Skimmers were in a mixed flock of seabirds on this crowded beach. I suspect that many of the assembled birds were local regulars... they didn't move for anything, and allowed close approach. Even when a small boy charged them yelling, they rose, circled and landed in the same location. I binged on photos!

VWS6383 Taken on the Wing-Soulbury road August 18 2017. A day of sun and bursts of rain. I don't know where the rain dropped but I was fortunate enough not to get wet! I took this photograph because I just loved that huge cloud.
The sun was still very bright and I only had my iPhone so I used the tree to block the sun - I like the final image. I think i might use this a cover for some blank inside note cards.
