If you've ever been driving through Salt Lake on I-80 in the middle of a storm and watched a jet scream north over the freeway on approach, these puppies were lit up.

I picked this because I like the flares. They remind me how intense the alpine sun was as we were climbing up the moraine to the foot of the Victoria Glacier and the Death Trap avalanche chute. Emilie and Oda are the second and third people in the bottom right of the picture.
We arrived at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park twenty minutes after Episode 33 ended! We could see the plume disappear as we approached. Maybe next time! We still had a pleasant little day trip.
This new bridge spans 200 metres of the Walkham Valley near Tavistock, Devon. It replaces the original Gem bridge, built by Brunel and demolished in the 1950s.
Rebuilding the bridge has been integral to the establishment of an 18 mile cycle and pedestrian route linking Tavistock with Plymouth via Horrabridge and Yelverton.

It was an extremely busy day for me. There was one very important deadline to be due, so I had trying my best to do as much as possible. Fortunately I finally barely made it.
As there was not really time for me to have the time or even mood to take shots to complete my assignment for Project 365. So I just took very few shots today.
Out of surprise, as I tried to upload it and tried to see what will be the number I am going to put in. Suddenly I realized that today will be my Day 300. Wow! That means that I will have a bit more than 2 months and then I will be completing my entire year's project.
So as the days go by, I am slowly approaching to my destination to full fill my dream.
40145 approaches Falmouth Docks with 1Z45 1750 Penzance - Falmouth Docks - Penzance leg of the CFPS "East Lancs Champion" railtour on Saturday 15th May 2010.
The evening leg of the superb two-day tour that paired D1015 & 40145. Even though it was a railtour, Falmouth along with St Ives amd Newquay were outrageous branches to visit and undoubtedly the first time a 40 has been.
A beery night in Penzance was followed the next day with visits to St Ives and Newquay - all with storming runs off both machines, especially after they were paired at Plymouth for the run back to Oxford.
This shot was taken at 2055hrs with just enough light at the time for the shot. I don't think if it ever happens again, that we'd be looking at a daytime trip along the Falmouth (or other Cornish) branches.
Isn't it always the way: during my lunchtime trip to Brooklyn last week, this shot and the other one I just posted were the two I was most excited to capture, but once I got back to my computer, they ended up as the ones I was least satisfied with. Camera LCDs can be so deceiving!

Track work continues on the former Illinois Central Railroad's (IC) main line, now Canadian National Railway's (CN) McComb Subdivision as the old 115-pound rails were recently replaced with the newer and heavier 136-pound rails.

Compared to the other munros I tackled during my vacations, Ben Lawers was by far the easiest to climb. Nonetheless it was fun too and an enjoyable walk.

We took a boat from Elounda to the island of Spinalonga, a very pleasant trip in its own right. Nowadays the island is best known as the setting for Victoris Hislop's novel 'The Island' based on an island leper colony.
As this view clearly shows the island was not originally intended as a leper colony. The Venetians occupied the area from the 13th to the 17th centuries. (It is probably no coincedence that the island of Guidecca in Venice was also known as Spinalunga). The shallow seas in Elounda bay were ideally for the production of salt and Spinalonga island had a key strategic position at the entrance to the bay.
In the 16th century the Ottoman Turks began to take a keen interest in the area so the Venetians decided to fortify the island using the latest techniques. This including building two Mezzaluna Bastions, one at each end of the island, plus high defensive walls where there were no natural cliffs.
The fortifications proved to be very effective as the Turks invaded the island of Crete in 1645 but Spinalonga did not surrender to them for another 60 years.
The final Turkish inhabitants left in 1903 when the island was designated a leper colony. In what now seems a rather barbaric approach, people with leprosy were transferred to from the main island to Spinalonga, provided with a small allowance and left to their own devices. However, at that time there was no known cure for leprosy and it was thought to be highly contagious.
Conditions for the inhabitants changed for the better after 1930 when a law student, Epameinondas Remoundakis, was sent to the island. He started a process of establishing a more 'normal' lifestyle on the island encouraging people to help each other and work to provide more creature comforts. In time a cafe, cinema, theatre and even a small church were established. People also fell in love, married and had children, some of whom grew up on the island without ever catching the disease.
In 1948 a cure for leprosy was discovered and the inhabitants gradually left until the colony was finally closed in 1957.
