A slightly different take on my previous photo. While my main goal was to catch the train spanning the gulch on the iconic cantilver bridge. I also wanted to capture the sharp curve that leads to the bridge and requires a slow order to negotiate. In the distance is the red signal for the north end of Hurricane Siding which is one of two rather isolated CTC islands on the Alaska Railroad..
VIA 907 has just crossed over the Delisle river as VIA 624 approaches Coteau Jct, where the train will leave VIA Rail's Alexandria Sub and continue to Montreal on CN's Kingston Sub.
I am currently working on this kit of some small shops of the type that were often situated near to railway stations.
It is loosely based on similar buildings that once stood next to West Croydon bus station.
The building requires some quite intricate work. Instructions are being compiled.
As we approach the election of 2024, something that is on everyone's minds is freedom. As in, what does it mean, and will we still enjoy it after the results of the election are announced. Yale professor Timothy Snyder has written a book on the subject called "On Freedom". I've read it twice this season. It's one of the most important books I've ever read. My entries for this Polaroid Week are based on interpretations of points made in his book.
Snyder posits that there is a difference in conceptions of freedom, one of which is negative freedom, which can be thought of as "freedom from", and positive freedom, or "freedom to". Postive freedom is about enabling free people to live their lives to the fullest, and negative freedom is about preventing anything from preventing you from doing whatever you want. Positive freedom leads to democracy. Negative freedom leads in the opposite direction.
There are five components to positive freedom in Snyder's estimation. The first of these is Sovereignty. Each person is sovereign over their own selves. They are responsible for their own being, their own decisions, their own beliefs. The task of a parent raising a child is to teach them to be a sovereign being, capable of judging right from wrong and living their life in a way that is true to themselves.
My first entry for Polaroid Week represents Sovereignty with a mixed media piece, one of my construction paper people on Polaroid Retinex Type-I film, with a piece of construction paper glued onto the frame so it extends outside the circular frame of the Retinex film.

This location is something of a classic on the Moffat, as the Zephyr wraps around the tight curve on the approach to Tunnel 29, the shortest tunnel in the Tunnel District at only 75 feet in length. My dad has a shot of the Rio Grande Zephyr, with DRGW 5771 leading, from roughly this same perspective. Note the slight discoloration in the rock by the final Superliner, This used to be Tunnel 28, but was daylights decades ago due to cave-ins.

I've found a new approach to my cold muesli.
Chia seeds and frozen blueberries. There is some improvement to the preservation of blueberries. Also, there is an added texture that I am very much in favor of with the help of chia seeds.
Note to self: Maybe my freezer temperature is too low....
Too many memories for me off this platform and on this station; the soundtrack of wheel squeal and compressors coming into action in the background.

An ES44AC and 3 ET44ACs lead a west-bound CN freight along the South Bend Sub, passing the Wellsboro set out track.
The rising sun illuminates a local storm approaching the Gold Coast from the southeast. A few lights are still visible at Currumbin Alley and Coolangatta.
This image was taken back in 2016 during a trip to Iceland and depicts a panoramic landscape of Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park.
I decided to do a bit of archive raiding, which is never a bad thing. During my revisiting of the file containing images of Iceland I came across some additional images to edit as well as some old ones. Discovered a few panoramic photos, which this image is one of and is uses nine image to create what you see.
I have to say I wouldn't mind going back to Iceland one day.
For a while I will present as many views of the iconic Cradle Mountain as you may have seen... a kind of irresistible force draws the camera lens towards it.... here you will notice the effects of recent fires which while not desirable I think adds something to the image...
Thunderstorm on 10.07.2014 in Hessen(Germany). This day storms came from Northeast. Because of this, the sun was able to illuminate the cell and the foreground from the front and produce a great lighting scene.

Gewitteraufzug am 10.07.2014 bei Friedberg(Hessen).
An dem Tag zogen Gewitter aus Nordosten. Das sorgte dafür, dass die Zelle und der Vordergrund von der tiefstehenden Sonne von vorne angestrahlt wurde, was eine einzigartige Lichtstimmung erzeugte.

Persistent thunderstorms put us in a holding pattern above Denver until the fuel ran low, so the pilot decided to divert to Grand Junction CO to top up. After which we went to Denver, where the weather had cleared up. That way, a flight that usually takes one hour ended up taking five.

Looking out over the Atlantic ocean to an area called the Western approaches, this shot is from Pendeen lighthouse .

With an RMT strike on this day causing the independent freight lines by-passing Crewe to be closed, trains were passing through the station. The driver of Freightliner Class 70 No. 70016 opens up the power after approach control slowed him to a crawl before taking the junction to Manchester with 4Z20, the 10:30 Southampton MCT – Trafford Park intermodal on 3rd January 2023.
