Continuing south from MP 912 with the SCFE Cane 1 chase, I’d pull up to Palmdale, FL for the next photo spot at the small double-tracked wooden trestle by the Fisheating Creek Outpost park grounds. Not long after arriving, #USSC6324 eases its loaded train over the trestle while making a whole lotta noise for the adjacent grade crossing by the park entrance. The engineer has slowed his train down to 25 MPH to pass the “Over L W Timber Switch” .7 miles south at Harrisburg, located at MP 918.70. There, the original Haines City Branch alignment diverges to the east onto the former Moore Haven & Clewiston Railway right-of-way, now part of the SCFE Sebring Subdivision.
As previously mentioned, the trackage between Sebring and Harrisburg was laid down by the Atlantic Coast Line as part of an extension of their Haines City Branch south to Ortona between 1916 and 1918. Palmdale itself hosted a small yard and mixed-use depot—located half a mile north from the trestle framed above—that lasted until Seaboard Coast Line’s tenure of the line… The yard was downsized to its current form as the 3,250 ft “Palmdale” siding while the depot experienced a less favorable fate, disappearing sometime in the late 1980’s—the last known photos of its existence date back to 1982 [available at floridamemory.com].
Coordinates for the depot’s site are at 26.944974, -81.317053. All that remains of the infrastructure there is the depot’s relay box and a small wooden shed, its intended purpose I’m not sure of.

As the last light of day begins to disappear, a handful of passengers gather on the leaf-ridden Claremont platform, the result of harsh winds the previous day, awaiting their westbound train to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, eastbound Metrolink train 336 lurks in the distance, rounding the corner past the intermediate signal at milepost 32 as it races away from the sunset towards San Bernardino.

We found a pride of lion just north of Grootkolk. They are roaring, playing and fighting short after sunrise.

After a long slow climb up the valley 37897 has arrived at Tondu. The train was the 11.15 Pontycymmer to Jersey Marine steel supply.
37897 was built at the Vulcan Foundry and entered traffic 18/07/1963 as D6855. it was renumbered 37155 under TOPS and upon rebuilding it became 37897 12/12/1986. The loco was withdrawn 31/08/2005 and is in preservation.

Built in 1385, Bodiam Castle is a perfect example of a late medieval moated castle and is
one of Britain's most famous and evocative castles.
It is situated beside the River Rother in East Sussex and was built in the late 14th century by a veteran of King Edward III's wars with France, originally as a coastal defence. In 1385, Sir Edward Dalyngrygge was given permission to fortify his house against invasion from France, but then decided to build a new stone castle a short distance away from the house.
What can be seen today is a relatively small, picturesque building that symbolises the movement from traditional medieval castle to comfortable manor house. With an almost square construction, Bodiam Castle has a notable symmetry and is surrounded by a wide moat. The moat was created from an artificial lake which, in turn, originated from allowing the river to flow into a rectangular area of marshy land.

Persistent thunderstorms put us in a holding pattern above Denver until the fuel ran low, so the pilot decided to divert to Grand Junction CO to top up. After which we went to Denver, where the weather had cleared up. That way, a flight that usually takes one hour ended up taking five.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad's Consolidation #29 slows her speed as she approaches Haywards Siding at Milepost 45.0, with a short, northbound passenger train. Historically, there was an 875 ft. passing siding here to allow north and southbound trains to pass each other and that siding has been recreated with the reconstruction of the present-day railroad. This location is also a spectacular spot from which to photograph trains as it offers a commanding view of the valley to the east.

Besides being an administrative center, it is a light industrial port and tourist hub.

"Grassholm (Welsh: Gwales or Ynys Gwales) is a small uninhabited island situated 13 kilometres off the southwestern Pembrokeshire coast in Wales, lying west of Skomer. It is the westernmost point in Wales other than the isolated rocks on which the Smalls Lighthouse stands. Grassholm is known for its huge colony of northern gannets; the island has been owned since 1947 by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and is one of its oldest reserves.
Grassholm National Nature Reserve is the third most important site for gannets in the world, after two sites in Scotland: St Kilda and Bass Rock. It serves as a breeding site for 39,000 pairs of the birds, and supports around 10 percent of the world population. Grain is our daily challenge. I went for a walk to take a subject that would suit a grainy B&W treatment. This plane was unexpected, but seems to fit the bill. The larger you view it, the grainier it looks.
YAY, finally a little bit of nice cloud cover - it has been quite cloudless around here for a long time now, and of course the clouds came yesterday morning with a beautiful sunrise - I was totally unprepared, so just had to enjoy it from our bed. ;-)
Decided to get out this morning, hoping they would still be around. I was not dissapointed, a nice little storm was approaching the coast line - so were able to get a few long exposures before the clouds dumped their payload. Got drenched running back to the car, but never mind, the clouds are back!
After the storm had passed I went back down to the rocks - but the camera did not want to turn on!!! Arrgh - packed everything back up again and were just enjoying the sunrise.
Not sure what happend, but the camera turned back on when I got home. phew.

This image was taken last year at Botallack Mines in Cornwall and depicts the mist rolling in towards Botallack.
I believe this was my second visit to Botallack and had originally planned to do what most do when they visit -capture a sunset. Once the mist rolled in, I knew I had to shelf those plans. It made for an interesting drive back as this was much like after the first visit when the drive back was covered in mist.
Unlike the recent posts, this image is a newly edited image.

A lengthy MRONY snakes into Gore Canyon as it slowly works up the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. Rafters are frequently seen in this area, attempting to navigate the fierce whitewater of the Colorado.

Among the best types of approach that's definitely the best. Strangely only she noticed me ... he was not disturbed ... better that way.
I was approaching the part of the loop where word has it that "the Short-Eared Owls are". I had decided that, unlike previous trip, I wasn't going to sit waiting for these guys. But that white bird with the dark wingtips, wasn't a Northern Harrier.
It was a glorious 10 minutes watching at least two Short-Eared Owls make their fluttering way around in loops, hunting over this area. The ten minutes in question started around 5:00 p.m., an hour and a quarter before sunset. There was at least one male (as here) and at least one female. The lady gave me some amazing quick but close looks through my passenger side window but I was largely unable to follow her with the camera. The fellow didn't come quite so close, but I was able to follow the larger magnitude of his chosen loop with the camera to ... a small extent, but better than nothing!
Tundra Swans in the distance (and a bit closer but hidden in the reeds, too.) And of course other vehicles ahead on the S loop. Some of those drivers might be looking at a bittern.
