Well, maybe not a scrum, but never having seen these birds before, that's what it looked like when I first encountered these birds.
I was on my second drive north to Alaska from Maryland and I was on the Alaska Highway between Whitehorse and Tok. I was passing by Kluane Lake when I saw what appeared to be a flock of birds on the water, so I quickly stopped and walked back past some trees to see what was there. Nothing. I scratched my head thinking that I had seen something and wondering if they had flown away. Just then these ducks started to reappear on the surface one by one. Obviously diving ducks of some kind but my word, what a head and beak on these birds! I watched as they would repeatedly dive as a group, leaving the surface together, and then after about 30 seconds they would reappear. And while on the surface it was as though they were talking about the recent dive just before they dove again. I watched them for about a half an hour just mesmerized by their behavior!! In this photo about half of them have already dove and you can see the tail-feathers of those going down.

Musselburgh...always hope for a flyby by a Scoter or Long-tailed Duck...one day...still think about the Pomarine Skua I missed here that flew up behind me one day...got a great picture of his tail 😄
An immature male was up the Pow Burn this morning. I've seen one here before about two years ago but it's quite an unusual site for them

I was actually in the New Forest photgraphing some Birds of Prey but I became somewhat distracted by the lovely Canada Geese Goslings. Judging by the fact that they couldn't stand up in the breeze very well and the state of their coats I would say they were extremely young.

I believe this to be a Mallard drake during the eclipse phase in August of this year, or its possible it's a young drake just starting to acquire the mature feathers. I can see a little bit of green on his head.

We have a small group of these amazing ducks on Loch Lomond at Balloch and I have been wanting to catch up with these for a while. They are very patchy and secretive in Scotland. Unfortunately today's weather selection of grey and drizzle wasn't too good for photography and their habit of hiding under the trees wasn't helping but I am so glad I managed to get them. First sunny day I'll go on another visit. There were three males and one very shy female.
This little Goosander family chugged past the ringing site at Edinburgh Airport this morning providing quite a distraction. Unfortunately the light was poor and this was the best I could do
There were literally hundreds of ring-necked ducks at Gunners Lake on Sunday. I captured these three drakes close together, almost like friends, hence, the caption. I love the iridescent purple on these drakes!

A lot of Gunners Lake was iced over the cold December day I visited there, but there was a small patch of clear water that the birds were using. There were several Gadwalls in the mix of birds and I watched as some of them would go after the ring-necked ducks that popped up from their quick dives with bits of food. The Gadwalls would attempt to snatch this food from the ring-necks. Apparently this is common behavior for Gadwalls.
I love the Gadwall plumage with its intricately patterned elegance.
