A relatively small diving duck with a tall peaked crown. Males are handsome with glossy black head and back, clean gray sides, and a brighter white spur on the side. Females are grayish-brown, often with a paler patch at the base of the bill and a white eyering. Both sexes have a white band near the tip of gray bill. Also note gray, not white, wingstripe in flight. Usually favors small bodies of water, such as beaver ponds and cattail marshes, but also occurs on larger lakes, rivers, and bays. Can be found in mixed flocks with other diving ducks, although usually in smaller numbers than scaup. Compare with both species of scaup and Redhead (especially females). (eBird)

More Eiders from Pittenweem yesterday

I was at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center today and there were a large flock of northern pintails on the lake. Being very shy birds they would move away from anyone approaching the lake so you couldn't get close to them. I put my 2X on and used one of the blinds and waited for the birds to move in response to others at the lake. As the birds moved towards the center of the lake I managed to capture an image of this drake. I just love the plumage on these ducks as well as their slender bodies. They are such elegant ducks!

Unmistakable large black swan with a red bill. When swimming this species is almost entirely black. Wings show extensive white flight feathers when flying. Juveniles are similar but dark-gray. In Australia, compare with Magpie Goose, which has white belly, and white underwing with black tips. Typically found along inland waterways, rivers, sewage ponds, and coastal lagoons and inlets. Sometimes flocks together in enormous numbers on large wetlands. (eBird)

Black Swans are listed as Escapees in Singapore, but this one was probably introduced in the Botanic Gardens as an "ornamental" bird, in much the same way as they are in other countries. Regardless of providence, it is a beautiful bird and worthy of a photo. Usually, one only sees the white wing feathers when in flight, but here we can see them on the right side of the bird.

Birding Singapore.

I watched a group of three juvenile Trumpeter Swans on the pond in back today. Interestingly, they would work on one end of the lake and then launch with a little bit of flight time to the other end of the lake, never getting much height from the water as they did so. I suspect that it's not only a faster way to get from one side to the other but it's a great way of working those wings in anticipation of migrating south for the winter!

This Northern Pintail hen flies past me during my visit to Creamer's Field to see the cranes migrating through. It was a nice underbelly shot of the wings and feathers. There were several ponds on the property which was of interest to the ducks, though I did see a few of these birds in the fields with the cranes. They had a capture cage on one of the ponds which they were using to band some of the ducks.

This Mallard drake is part of a flock that overwinters in Anchorage. There is very little open water right now at Spenard Crossing, where a small stream of water flows into a small lake and then into Westchester Lagoon. The mallards that stay in that area are kept alive by folks giving them a handout. I stopped by today to see how they were doing and captured this drake flying across the road to join the group on the other side.

I was at Spenard Crossing early in the morning but the light wasn't reaching everywhere. Then this Mallard hen with her brood came dancing through, which surprised me as I thought it was a bit early for chicks, but there she was as she shepherded her family through the hazards of nearby geese and other animals.

Small, short-legged coastal goose; distinctive black head and neck with small white necklace. Some variation in belly and flank coloration across subspecies. "Black Brant," mainly of western North America and eastern Asia, is darkest, with contrasting white flanks. Breeds on tundra in the high Arctic; winters in saltmarshes, rocky coastlines, sheltered bays, and beaches. Typically uncommon to rare inland. Almost always seen in flocks, only rarely mixing with other geese species. (eBird)

We usually get small flocks of Brant through Ottawa during migration, This one, though, had a damaged wing when it arrived and it stayed throughout the summer, It joined the gaggles of Canada Geese throughout the park and eventually disappeared with them that winter.

The males are looking very classy at this time of the year but the females aren't too bad either. Females can be very variable from a rich chestnut to very pale birds

This Lesser Scaup drake rides a wave crest as he shows of a bit more of his body as he bobs up and down in the water. The light is perfect to show those iridescent purple feathers on his head.

I was very lucky today to get three stonking males very close in at Linlithgow Loch AND the sun was shining

Here a Lesser Scaup drake comes in for a water landing with his feet out and ready to ski. It's always great fun to capture birds landing on water and land, to watch their techniques and learn their behaviors.

To my Flickr friends, I'm at Magee Marsh for a bit and then after settlement at the end of the month I hope to drive my car to our new life in Alaska! I'm slowly posting some older photos here and there as it will be June before I can process new photos again.

This Common Merganser hen swims by me at Spenard Crossing in Anchorage, following her significant other to an area just across from me. I don't think of these birds as ducks since they have such interesting long bills with sharp teeth-like serrations. They rested a bit while doing a bit of grooming and then the drake seemed to notice me and they were off again.

A brown duck with a vividly yellow bill and white scalloping on the feathers, giving it a scaly appearance, especially on the underparts. A common resident and nomad through Africa’s freshwater and brackish wetlands, where it forages for plants and invertebrates. The similar African Black Duck differs from Yellow-billed Duck by being darker overall and having white spots on the upperparts, a bull-neck, and a pale-pink-and-black bill. (eBird)

This lovely duck decided to do a fly-by to show off his lovely feather patterns. Not to be confused with the similar Yellow-billed Pintail, which is found in South America. This bird is only found in Africa.

This attractive diving duck often gathers by the thousands on lakes or bays in the winter. Males have cinnamon-colored head, yellow eye, and gray body. Females are plain brown overall, a lighter blond color than scaup and Ring-necked Duck. Also note evenly rounded head shape. About the size of Greater Scaup, but slightly larger than Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Duck—this can be helpful when they are together in mixed flocks. Best separated from Canvasback by head and bill shape and male’s darker gray body. Breeds on marshy freshwater ponds and lakes; winters in flocks on any large body of water, often mixed with other diving ducks. Dives frequently to reach submerged aquatic vegetation. (eBird)

---------------

The closest thing to a red and white bird that I could think of, with which to celebrate Canada Day. This little group were just a very few of the over 5000 Redheads on the lake that day. In places, the water looked red due to the huge number of these lovely ducks all in one spot.
