Unmistakable large black swan with a red bill. When swimming this species is almost entirely black. Wings show extensive white flight feathers when flying. Juveniles are similar but dark-gray. In Australia, compare with Magpie Goose, which has white belly, and white underwing with black tips. Typically found along inland waterways, rivers, sewage ponds, and coastal lagoons and inlets. Sometimes flocks together in enormous numbers on large wetlands. (eBird)

We saw at l;east a 1000 of these gorgeous swans as we travelled through NZ. They peacefully coexisted with all the other ducks and waterfowl, while towering over them. This one was settling in for the evening, tidying her feathers and getting comfortable.

Long-bodied duck with a thin bill and shaggy crest. Breeding males have a dark green head, brown breast, and gray sides. Females and immature males have a brown head and gray body. Bill is dull red. Separated from Common Merganser by thinner bill, shaggier crest, and slimmer shape overall. Dives to catch fish on large bodies of water, including freshwater lakes and coastal regions. Favors saltwater more than Common Merganser. (eBird)

This beautifully marked male and his mate (next photo) were swimming in Lake Ontario (definitely a large body of water). Red-breasted Mergansers are not as common as Common Mergansers around here and I don't usually see them in such great light. A very beautiful duck.

Three young Mallard feeding on.....duckweed

A large, dark chestnut-colored duck found primarily in sheltered fresh and brackish waters in well-wooded areas. In flight, distinctive bright blue upperwings stand out even along shaded creeks and streams. Widespread in the Afrotropical lowlands, but easy to overlook given its habits and habitat. Primary calls consist of hollow “ko-ko-ko” quacking and occasional wheezy whistles. (eBird)

We stopped along the side of the road to see what was in the pond. "What are those ducks with the blue wings?", asked I. "Those are the ducks we've been looking for" replied Francis, our guide. Great views of the Hartlaub's Duck were had by all.

Some more fun with the new camera - getting used to it gradually but still a few things need ironing out

A massive, long-necked,mostly black waterfowl with varying amounts of white on the head, belly, and wings. It has a warty red bill, face, and legs. In flight, the white forewings combined with the black body differentiate it from other regional waterfowl. The male is much larger than the female. It forages mostly for plant matter in a variety of wetland habitats and moist grasslands. Size and plumage make it distinctive amongst African waterfowl. (eBird)

What a cool goose! We saw him peering over the grass as we admired the Shoebill Heron. Choices, choices, choices - which to shoot? So I chose both :-)

Always great to find and photograph

Able to get out in some sunshine yesterday afternoon. Scotland's weather today has restored to default settings :-(

I love these small green masked, Green-winged Teals! This drake was just motoring along at the channel at Potter Marsh when I captured him.

There were a couple wigeon pairs at Beluga Slough in Homer, Alaska. This drake kept his eye on me while he tracked his mate who has disappeared into one of the many small tributaries that snake through the slough.

I'm not sure if it's better to photograph these in cloudy weather. The plumage contrast can be too stark in direct sunlight. But they are still magical birds with a lovelt call.

A relatively small diving duck with a tall peaked crown. Males are handsome with glossy black head and back, clean gray sides, and a brighter white spur on the side. Females are grayish-brown, often with a paler patch at the base of the bill and a white eyering. Both sexes have a white band near the tip of gray bill. Also note gray, not white, wingstripe in flight. Usually favors small bodies of water, such as beaver ponds and cattail marshes, but also occurs on larger lakes, rivers, and bays. Can be found in mixed flocks with other diving ducks, although usually in smaller numbers than scaup. Compare with both species of scaup and Redhead (especially females). (eBird)

More Eiders from Pittenweem yesterday

I was at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center today and there were a large flock of northern pintails on the lake. Being very shy birds they would move away from anyone approaching the lake so you couldn't get close to them. I put my 2X on and used one of the blinds and waited for the birds to move in response to others at the lake. As the birds moved towards the center of the lake I managed to capture an image of this drake. I just love the plumage on these ducks as well as their slender bodies. They are such elegant ducks!
