here is another animation showing the models and some minifigs, this time using the tile floor, it's not too bad the light is flickering... again, must remember to cache the bloody radiosity and caustics next time, got another idea for the next animation/render, will see how I go... please leave me some feedback, anything to help me get better!

Last year it seemed like everyone and their mom's was trying out for Adventure Time (my favorite cartoon) and I was no exception. Obviously, I didn't make the cut but I thought I'd post my boards. If you look at this one in the slideshow view it's more fun to cycle through.

MICA 2D Character Animation Assignment: Animate a character in an environment consisting of 3 boxes, a board, and a ball. The character uses these items to reach and turn off a fan. Also try to move the camera, maybe with zooming and panning.

I had a lot of fun experimenting with this one. I decided to make a miniature set and to animate my character over it, and I am really happy with the way it turned out.

After I filmed some video reference and found that I didn't have a firewire cable (argh) I thought I'd quickly sketch out the rough large movements that I want to happen at specific times.

Everything's really loose because it's just something to remind me what I want to do so that I don't have to keep my video camera on playback all day :P

This is an animation of Daisy, done in the Warhol style and animated. This was done entirely in Gimp! I put the animated version below since several people could not see it.

hopefully, i will start making lots of little harry potter spoofs in flash

now, onto character design......

This is pretty rough, but I'm excited by this test. It demonstrates a method for doing 8 cell cycle animations with Brushes.

I actually attempted to do a walking cycle, but I'm such a poor animator my first try looked more like a dance. So I went with the flow.

By the way, the music (12th Street Rag) comes from an old cassette of me playing the piano way back in 1973. It seemed to fit the tempo of the video and it was copyright free.

Notes: The man, the woman, and the feet were done in separate Brushes files. I used the same procedure in each. I started with a white background and painted the figure in one stroke. Then I filled with an almost opaque white so I could barely see the figure (like using tracing paper). I then drew the next position of the figure and in the next stroke I used white to erase what was left of the previous frame. Each position required three frames - white, a single stroke drawing, and some erasing with white.

I exported each movie using the Brushes Viewer on my Macbook at 24 fps. This version looked like an old flickery movie because every third frame was white. It was a cool effect, but not what I wanted. So I exported each clean frame out of each movie as a numbered PICT file and made a new movie from the image sequences. I then copied and pasted the cycles to get the length right for each sequence. This was all done in Quicktime Pro along with adding the audio track which I had edited in Audacity and saved as an AIFF file.

animation avec vieille dame

This animation is the first 2D Animation I created. As an artist response my role was to experiment, develop and complete an original artwork taking inspiration from certain aspects of an artists work. From my previous work within the same project, I knew my result from this artist was going to be some form of animation.

With research I managed to discover Puuung’s (Park Dami) animating process, combining the traditional ideas of hand-drawn cel, with the contemporary use of Adobe Photoshop’s layering and digital painting features to construct her pieces. This is what I eventually used to create my own looping GIF animation, only with the characters and background image entirely hand drawn and painted.

At first I began completing a series studies of Dami’s original characters, wanting to familiarize myself with her style and artistic visual language. Elements such as her use of a warm-toned palette, a composition that contained both negative space and intricate detail and her interesting use of line-work particularly caught my eye. I loved the artists attention to the architectural space that surrounded her figures, so decided to recreate my own environment, while still in the restrictions of the national lock-down.

When it came to creating my own original characters I used the same conceptual element as the artist in deciding to replicate myself and my ideal partner. To do so I had to complete my first character design without any source of reference other than the male anatomy. With myself, I took a short while drawing and sketching my own body to try and capture a sense of the true me within my piece.

From my designs I then deconstructed an existing looping GIF into five key “frames” tracing and transferring before transforming them into my pre-designed characters, this I then created as a loop within Adobe Photoshop.
