Material Animation is a kinetic light installation made from lasercut electro-luminescent (EL) foils which senses location, number and velocity of human occupants and responds through a mulitude of wirelessly networked components to encourage further interaction with the environment.
The experiment is situated in three rooms of an idle emergency bunker below ETH Zürich’s Science City campus. Each room reflects a different theme and approach to physically animate the distinctive material properties at an architectural scale. Electroluminescent foils are extremely thin, flexible and lightweight screens which emit a homogeneous cold light across their surface without the need for additional infrastructure.
The project was realized within 3 1/2 weeks by the 2010/11 MAS class at the chair for CAAD, ETH Zürich, supervised and tutored by Manuel Kretzer and Ruairi Glynn and supported through Lumitec AG and Ulano Corp.
It merges advanced techniques in parametric design, digital fabrication, physical computing, electronics and material science with theories and computational approaches to machine intelligence and sets them into a real world context.

Biennale Festival Film Animasi Indonesia telah dimulai sejak tahun 2001 dan pada tahun 2007 akan dilaksanakan untuk yang keempat kalinya. Acara ini terselenggara sebagai program kerja Komite Film Dewan Kesenian Jakarta untuk mengapresiasi dan mengembangkan animasi Indonesia dengan mewadahi komunitas animasi, studio film animasi, komunitas film independen maupun para individu pembuat film animasi.
Festival Film Animasi Indonesia yang telah menjadi agenda ASIFA (Association International du Film d’Animation/ International Animated Film Association) dan barometer industri animasi Indonesia ini selalu dihadiri, didukung dan diramaikan oleh komunitas animasi dalam, luar negeri dan umum.
Penyelenggaraan Festival Film Animasi Indonesi yang keempat tahun ini akan dimeriahkan dengan fringe events yang variatif dan pemutaran film animasi produksi animator dalam dan luar negeri, seminar/diskusi yang menghadirkan pembicara dari dalam dan luar negeri serta kompetisi film animasi karya animator dalam negeri.
Dalam pengkategoriannya, tahun ini ada kategori Film Animasi TVC selain juga kategori film pendek, film serial animasi, film animasi favorit penonton.

Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Rise of the Graphic Novel

1) What is a graphic novel?
2) If "NBM became America's first graphic novel publisher" in 1976, how can Will Eisner's A Contract With God (1978/Baronet) be the first graphic novel? If you are interested in answers, you wont find them in Faster Than a Speeding Bullet: The Rise of the Graphic Novel.
The Rise... is an essay on the short history of the graphic novel and the relatively long history of comic strips and books, the grandparent and parent of author Stephen Weiner's subject.
1a) One would think that Weiner would define the subject of his essay. But, in his defense, the definitions of the much older short story, novel, comic strip and comic book were only recently codified. Graphic novels are very young.
2b) The discrepancy in who was the first publisher and first graphic novel is impossible for this reviewer to resolve.
There are other discrepancies. As example, it's difficult to understand why books about comics are included in an essay about graphic novels.
But crepancies do abound in The Rise...
Will Eisner is a comics genius and deserves inclusion. Jules Feiffer (Tantrum), Wendy and Richard Pini (Elfquest), Alan Moore and Steve Bissette (Swamp Thing), Art Spiegelman (Maus), Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and others also played roles in the increasing popularity of the graphic novel.
It's equally true that a single story told in a single volume adds nuances to comics that are difficult or impossible to achieve in a daily comic strip. But there the praise ends.
Drum roll. Announcing an editorial comment that has nothing to do with The Rise…:
Graphic novels are not better than comic strips or books. They are simply different. They should be welcomed into the comics family, but should replace no family member.
The Rise... is recommended for those curious about graphic novels.
