The Zermatt Alps are one of the most famous and popular ski destinations in Switzerland, with its iconic Matterhorn view. This picture was taken at around mid august, so the areas around Zermatt were generally free of snow, except the peaks you can see in the distance.
These peaks are snow capped all year round, and at the Klein Matterhorn, a ski slope operates all year round, and lots of people take the cable car up there in the summer. This picture was taken along the Hiking trail near the Gornergrat tramway. It was a beautiful clear day, so we took the tram up to the Gornergrat observatory and then hiked our way down. If I remembered correctly the Matterhorn was to the right of this image.

Les Contamines Montjoie, a Savoyard village at the foot of Mont-Blanc
The name of the village originates from ancient local dialect. The word “Contamines” once meant ploughable land on the squires estate.
Important dates
1760: Birth of an independent parish (detached from the parish of Saint-Nicolas de Véroce)
1850: Creation of the local Mountain Guides Company
1900: Development of the first tourist infrastructures, hotels etc
1911: Creation of the local ski club
1937: Creation of the first ski Lift
1949: Les Contamines is renamed Les Contamines-Montjoie
1952: Creation of the first chair-lift and the summer playground at l’Etape.
1971: Development of Bellevue, La Ruelle and the Col du Joly.
The valley of Les Contamines is a jewel at the heart of the Mont Blanc region. The sensation of a hidden valley results in a very close knit local community.
The village has preserved its historic aspect. More than 70% of old farm buildings have been restored in respect of the local Savoy architecture.

Swiss Alps JungFrau (Jungfrau-Aletsch) at 13,642 ft altitude. From our 2006 European trip. Jungfraujoch, in the heart of a glorious glacier world on the very roof of Europe! Superb views extend as far as the summits of the Vosges Mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany. The Great Aletsch Glacier, at 22 km the longest ice-stream in the Alps, begins on the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe.
