In the secluded heights of Valmasque Valley, a pristine alpine lake lies perfectly still, mirroring the jagged cliffs and brilliant blue sky above. The water’s clarity reveals submerged stones near the shore, while the surrounding rocky terrain and steep ridges frame this tranquil scene with dramatic elegance. Captured in Mercantour National Park, this image is a testament to the quiet majesty of the French Alps—where silence speaks and nature reflects its own grandeur.

Silently standing in front Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, and to the right, the Grand Jorasse, queen of the Ferret Valley.
The project to photograph these giants, which began last year, has been completed, much to my satisfaction.

I took the photo from the train (Rhaetian Railway), when travelling from Chur towards Ilanz, Grisons, Switzerland. The Rhine gorge is largely inaccessible by road, but one can visit it by train or hiking. It is a popular location for rafting and kayaking.

Discovering Lac Egorgéou during my Tour du Queyras trek was one of those magical moments that remind you why you venture into the mountains. I found myself captivated by this perfect mirror nestled in the heart of the alpine cirque, its glassy surface reflecting the golden autumn slopes with stunning clarity.
My intention was to capture the intimate relationship between the lake and its surrounding landscape - not just the grand vista, but the subtle details that make this place so special. I chose to include the textured foreground with its tufts of autumn grass and the small reflecting pool, creating layers of storytelling within the frame.
I wanted to convey that sense of pristine solitude that Lac Egorgéou embodies - a place where time seems suspended, where the only sounds are the whisper of wind through the grass and the gentle lapping of water against the shore. This composition speaks to the delicate beauty of high-altitude ecosystems, where every element - from the smallest puddle to the towering peaks - contributes to a perfect natural harmony.
This moment of absolute stillness at Lac Egorgéou represents for me the soul of mountain photography: finding poetry in wilderness.

«If a photographer can’t feel what he is looking at, then he is never going to get others to feel anything when they look at his pictures.»
The Trift Glacier in the Bernese Oberland is rapidly dwindling. The whole basin visible in this picture was filled with ice only two decades ago. Today, the lower parts of the Trift Glacier are literally running out of ice.
The meltwater lake only formed in 2002 by the retreating glacier. Since 2009 it can be crossed on a spectacular suspension bridge (100 metres high and 170 metres long). A first bridge built in 2006 had to be replaced because it was not deemed safe enough under certain wind conditions.
For detailed information on the Trift Glacier and for spectacular pictures have a look at glaciology.ethz.ch/messnetz/glaciers/trift.html and www.swisseduc.ch/glaciers/alps/triftgletscher/index-en.html.
The peak in the background is the Triftstöckli (3035m).

Swiss Alps:
The Zermatt (Mattertal) and Saas Fee (Saastal) valleys are separated by the Mischabel mountain range, an Alpine chain that includes a dozen peaks that exceed four thousand meters, and culminates in the summit of the Dom, which is the most high peak located entirely in Swiss territory. The mountains in the photo are, from the left, the Fimpfischhorn, the Stralhorn and the Adlehorn. They were photographed from the slopes of the Oberrothorn, a mountain above Zermatt, in Valais, which exceeds 3400 meters of altitude and which can be reached by a hiking trail on a path (a succession of mechanical lifts allows you to significantly shorten the route) .

It's necessary for us and our backpacks, as the African heat that is currently engulfing the old continent is unbearable.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Buon fine settimana a tutti ! Buon Ferragosto.

A quiet scene from Col de la Cayolle, located in Mercantour National Park. At over 2,300 meters altitude, a shallow alpine pond mirrors golden grasses and scattered rocks. Rugged slopes rise in the background beneath a clear blue sky, in complete silence. Late summer light, no human presence—just untouched nature, where stone meets grass.
Night in the mountains: The three peaks of Piz Palü (3882m, 3900m, 3898m), Bellavista (3798m, 3885m), Piz Argient (3942m), Crast' Agüzza (3869m) and Piz Bernina (4049m), Piz Morteratsch (3751m), Piz Tschierva (3402m), and Piz Boval (3352m). Seen from Diavolezza (2972m).
The very bright blob near the Western horizon (i.e. to the right) is Venus.
The light pollution from St. Moritz was quite heavy and I am not happy with the colours of this shot. I will have to experiment for a while and watch a tutorial or two on how to get rid of that ghastly orange glow and get more natural colours…
The Sciliar ("Schlern" in German) is a prominent mountain in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Italy, 2,563 meters (8,408 feet) high. It's situated near the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), one of Europe's largest high-altitude Alpine meadows.
The mountain is known for its unique shape, with the Punta Santner and Punta Euringer peaks being particularly notable. Its steep rock faces and bizarre form make it a symbol of South Tyrol. In South Tyrolean folklore, the Sciliar is associated with witches, particularly the "Sciliar Witches," who are said to be responsible for heavy storms.
In this photo, the rocks look quite harmless, with a halo :-).

The valley of the river Reuss in the Canton of Uri (Central Switzerland) is the northern access to the Gotthard Pass, one of the major transit routes across the Alps (for both motor vehicles and railways). I took the picture near Gurtnellen, when hiking on the so called "Via Gottardo".

Panorama made from union of multiple shots.
To reach the farmers' summer houses down there, by continuing here will take another three hours; last year going up from the village of Glacier, there below the waterfall took me 80 minutes, however once I got to the By plain, you could not see all the mountains so well.
Here ends the storytelling of this beautiful exploration made in early summer, now I move elsewhere ...

Just below the Col de la Meina (2,702 m), above Evolène (Valais, CH), a small water mirror forms when the snow melts, and survives most of the summer.
It is a nice trip on an easy path (which can be shortened by using the chairlift starting from Lannaz). The view over the Swiss Alps range is spectacular. The one in the photo is dominated by Weissorn (4.505 m) and its satellites, on the left the Bishorn (4.151 m) and on the right the Schalihorn (3.974 m).
The photo was taken over ten years ago, in August. I'm afraid this beautiful pond has been another victim of global warming.
