A pasque flower blooms at 10,300'/ 3100 m near Brainard Lake in the Front Range of the southern Rockies. Its lowland cousins were flowering 7 weeks ago. The populations differ greatly in height, a common adaptation to mountain weather. The high elevation populations are shorter, lowering exposure to high winds and keeping the flower closer to the warmer soil surface.

Alpine Larch trees shown in various stages of changing colors as viewed from the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) going to Cutthroat Pass, North Cascades, Washington State.
I had some time after meetings on this autumn day in the late afternoon to drive the famous Alpine Loop in Utah. The 17-mile drive is known for its bright autumn leaves, which start to appear in September, but tend to be at their best in October and into November--depending on the weather, of course.

Morning light on an alpine lake, a tree-covered peninsula, and a shaded talus slope in the distance.
This photograph takes us back to the northern reaches of the Yosemite backcountry, off of a trail that ultimately heads further north and out of the park. We left the main trail in this area and wandered up into a valley with a series of beautiful subalpine and alpine lakes below high ridges and peaks near the Sierra crests. The group set up camp here and photographed for days.
This lovely lake with its far talus-slope shoreline was moments from our campsite; we photographed it often and passed it every time we went off to more distant locations. Perhaps because it was so convenient, but also because it was so beautiful, we often ended up photographing along its shoreline in the morning. I made this photograph shortly after the sun had cleared the ridge on the far side of the lake, sending beautiful backlight down onto the trees on the peninsula.

This little one (and it was very small, even for a chipmunk) seemed unconcerned about myself and my husband as we sat amongst the boulders at the talus slope pika area at Middle Gaylor Lake. This is truly an alpine environment with almost no trees, above 10,000 feet.

I really wanted to experience the yellow larches on the Alpe di Siusi this autumn. In addition I planned to take a few holidasy in the last week of October and go there. Unfortunately, bad weather was announced for half the week and I postponed my plan by a few days. When I finally got there almost a week later than planned, I was lucky: the larch coloring had already clearly passed its peak, but it was still golden.

A really tough hike, but the lake and views are just stunning! The waters so pure and the colors reminiscent of a tropical getaway. The presence of the mountains ringing the lake and off in the distance were awesome. I hope in the future to do more hiking in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
I know I've been off Flickr for a while. In a nutshell, work has been extremely challenging and I have just been too tired to keep up with posting on various websites. I hope to keep on top of things a little more now that things are kind of settling down.

Yellow clusters of Pasqueflower (Pulsatilla alpina ssp. apiifolia) dot the steep lush slopes west of Alagna Pianalunga in the Italian Alps.
Our day began much further downslope at the bottom of the valley, which was still gripped in the sweaty fingers of a significant heat wave. We thought to ascend the Rio Otro and find some specimens of Walser architecture in the middle reaches of the Val d'Otro. However, after 30 minutes or so of walking, the heat of the lower elevation reaches of the trail proved too much for some in our party, and we decided to retreat back to the town of Alagna and ride the chairlift up to the alpine and cooler temperatures.
The queue for the lift was shockingly long, swelled by students in uniforms on a school trip. Fortunately for us, the adult chaperones motioned that we should pass them and jump to the front of the queue, and we gladly obliged. At the top of the lift, we ambled uphill toward the flowers and what appears to be a fantastic piste in colder months. My boys amused themselves throwing rocks into a pipe stuck into the stream, and my wife and I sought attractive groupings of yellow Pasqueflower.
