A lovely medieval town situated on the side of a mountain in the Alpi Apuane in the northwest section of the Tuscany region of Italy.
This is a sunset shot taken at the glacier lake at the foot of mount Clariden. By now this alpine paradise has become pretty famous among landscape photographers. One of the reasons is that the lake is relatively quickly accessible from the nearby Klausen mountain pass. Probably due to the strong breeze that evening, I nonetheless could enjoy this amazing place by myself...unlike yesterday evening, where an other handful of photographers gathered along the waterside to capture the best moments of the sunset.

It's one of the biggest alpine meadows in Julian Alps and also very beautiful. Now of course almost all shepherds huts have been converted into weekend huts.
As we enter the Triglav National Park, this cart-road should convert into a hikers trail. That's how once it was. But forest workers don't care about the national park. With their roads and cutting trees they are devastating nature and and also the bureaucrats of the park don't care. Actually they perhaps must benefit of that crime.

On traditional alpine huts like this one, family members used to spend their summers high up in the mountains, looking after the animals grazing there. I found this particular hut especially beautiful, though I’m not sure whether it still serves its original purpose.

When creating a burrow, they use both their forepaws and hind feet to assist in the work—the forepaws scrape away the soil, which is then pushed out of the way by the hind feet. If there are any stones in the way, the alpine marmot will remove them with its teeth provided that the stones aren't too large. "Living areas" are created at the end of a burrow, and are often lined with dried hay, grass and plant stems.
Alpine marmots survive extreme changes in weather and food shortages during winter by hibernating.As the summer begins to end, alpine marmots will gather old stems in their burrows in order to serve as bedding for their impending hibernation, which can start as early as October. They seal the burrow with a combination of earth and their own faeces. Once winter arrives, alpine marmots will huddle next to each other and begin hibernation, a process which lowers their heart rate to five beats per minute and breathing to 1–3 breaths per minute.

From Brand we climbed to the Untere Zalimalpe, at 1366m. There is a farm over there and lots of cows that can graze on the meadows during summer.
The Zalimtal is an idyllic valley in the Austrian Alps. The walking trail leads up to a mountain hut, the Oberzalimhütte, but we wouldn't get that far because of the snow on the track! [Explored on 4 Dec 2024, #94]
Situated at a height of 1.000 m, directly on the crystal clear lake Eibsee, it is in the middle of the fantastic alpine panorama surrounding Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, 68 km from Innsbruck and 97 km from Munich International Airport.
Der Eibsee ist ein See 9 km südlichwestlich von Garmisch-Partenkirchen unterhalb (3,5 km nördlich) der Zugspitze im Wettersteingebirge in Bayern. Er gehört zur Gemeinde Grainau und ist im Privatbesitz des Eibsee-Hotels am Ostufer im gleichnamigen Weiler der Gemeinde.

Above treeline in the Rockies the growing season starts late, particularly where the snow piles up during the winter. Just below Missouri Pass (12,000’/ 3600 m) where the snow can be deep at the end of winter, the peak flowering season occurs in mid-August, a few weeks later than lower and higher elevations. This beautiful meadow has some wonderful floral diversity, including 2 species of paintbrush (red is split-leaf paintbrush, Castilleja rhexifolia; yellow is western yellow paintbrush, C. occidentalis), little elephant head (purple flowers on left, Pedicularis groenlandica), fleabane daisies (purple flowers toward the middle, Erigeron sp), American bistort (Bistorta bistortoides), and at least a couple of species of yellow daisies (aka DYCs).

This is a moonlight blend. The foreground is taken while the moon is still up. Then after the moon sets, a second set of images are taken for the night sky. One issue that I have difficulty is keeping the lighting in the image. If I leave it too light it looks like a daytime image. Too dark and it is difficult to see the image details. This is not to even mention making a print. The image obviously looks good with the back light of the monitor, but this gives a challenge in a print. I would love to hear your thoughts on how dark is too dark.

A photo from last year which I resurrected to accompany a paper I have coming out this year on long-lasting effects of air pollution in this environment. The photo mostly shows off the vegetation of the alpine, a mix of sedges and forbs, at its peak green here. Fall colors have already advanced by this posting time (mid August)- the growing season is very short at 12,000' / 3700 m. Summer monsoon clouds have built up with the threat of a late afternoon thunderstorm. The peaks are (r - l) Mount Audubon, Paiute Peak, and Pawnee Peak, as viewed from Niwot Ridge.
