This one visit us in the winter, and we could manage to take much better photos than this one (notice the ISO 12800 with a non particular good camera), but for the sake of completeness... I didn't want to leave it out!

Yellow flowers seen in Dolomites. At background is visible the mountain Averau :)
Averau (2,649m) is the highest mountain of the Nuvolau Group in the Dolomites, located in the Province of Belluno, northern Italy, between the Falzarego Pass and the Giau Pass. The mountain is usually climbed from its northern face, which is less steep than its other faces, by the Averau ferrata. The view from the summit takes in many of the Dolomitic giants, including Monte Civetta, Monte Pelmo, Antelao and Sorapiss.

Situated at a height of 1.000 m, directly on the crystal clear lake Eibsee, it is in the middle of the fantastic alpine panorama surrounding Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, 68 km from Innsbruck and 97 km from Munich International Airport.

From Brand we climbed to the Untere Zalimalpe, at 1366m. There is a farm over there and lots of cows that can graze on the meadows during summer.
The Zalimtal is an idyllic valley in the Austrian Alps. The walking trail leads up to a mountain hut, the Oberzalimhütte, but we wouldn't get that far because of the snow on the track! [Explored on 4 Dec 2024, #94]

This alpine marmot was looking very healthy and almost ready for hibernation but it has still some time to gain weight for the winter time. NP Hohe Tauern, Austria

The Great Race Across the Southwest begins its run between Alpine and Sanderson, Texas, on the morning of November 2. Cold temperatures caused the train to smoke good departing Alpine, seen here traversing a curve on the east side of town. 11/2/2019
Between Lake City and Engineer Pass, the Alpine Loop follows Henson Creek upstream. This view shows Henson Creek and Engineer Mountain, 13,218 feet. The Alpine Loop climbs steeply to Engineer Pass, 12,800 feet, on the northeastern shoulder of Engineer Mountain.
Oddly enough, the San Juan Mountains have TWO big mountains named "Engineer Mountain". The other is 27 miles to the southwest, near Coal Bank Pass, north of Durango, Colorado.
The Alpine ecosystem is warming up and coming alive. Higher up there was flowers pushing up through the snow.
A photo from last year which I resurrected to accompany a paper I have coming out this year on long-lasting effects of air pollution in this environment. The photo mostly shows off the vegetation of the alpine, a mix of sedges and forbs, at its peak green here. Fall colors have already advanced by this posting time (mid August)- the growing season is very short at 12,000' / 3700 m. Summer monsoon clouds have built up with the threat of a late afternoon thunderstorm. The peaks are (r - l) Mount Audubon, Paiute Peak, and Pawnee Peak, as viewed from Niwot Ridge.
