▶"Iris versicolor —commonly known as the blue flag, harlequin blueflag, larger blue flag, northern blue flag, and poison flag— is a species of iris native to the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada, found in sedge meadows, marshes, and along streambanks and shores. It is a flowering herbaceous perennial plant, growing 4 – 31 inches high (10–80 cm). Flowers, blooming from May to July, are light to deep blue (although purple and violet are not uncommon) with six petals."

By this point, the irises had begun to lose their luster but still were resplendent in their wabi-sabi. Compare to this image, taken nine days earlier.

Red Fox

The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

Cold, desolate and cold. These are the words that went through my head as the orders came, and me and my men executed them. This war, fighting alongside these warriors, I knew the possibility that something like this would occur, taking out the very knights that entrusted us with their safety and in return, gave us our safety and at times, our lives. I’m not one to cower from orders, I rather see it as evaluating quite important strategic decisions. Death to these warriors must be the answer or? They are traitors are they not? But who knows, perhaps, this was all by design. Perhaps, I’m just thinking foolishly. It’s now been several rotations since our dissent onto this pitiful planet. Our orders were to locate any more of the missing treacherous knights. Suspects have been spotted roaming the alleyways. One in particular, has been cited multiple times. I think the best thing to do is to clear my head, get the job done. Wouldn’t want to lose it now would I.

- Commander Deviss

I bring you my Jedi Hunt on Eriadu MOC, a scene straight out of the awesome Star Wars Purge comic series. This takes place some time after Order 66 and follows Commander Deviss and his group of clone troopers hunting down a Jedi Master in an alleyway of this industrial city on the planet.

When I set out to create this build, I wanted the focus to be set on the figures and have the detail around really make them stand out. For me, having a balance in colors really is the start of that. As I talk about in the video available on the Beyond The Brick YouTube channel, the details and colors are meant to complement the other surrounding parts. I really think the red beams on top stand out and work nicely with the red from Deviss, really making him pop with his troopers. The classic black border that you’ve seen from some of my other builds really help tie things together as well. Overall, I think the build was a successful recreation of an iconic scene.

If you like this build, consider tapping the fave button ever so slightly and if you’re feeling like doing a bit extra, follow me here. Thanks!

A new bridge has just been completed alongside the Woolwich riverside, which is a godsend for cyclists as before you had to cycle into a housing estate & along a busy road for 1.5 miles to eventually get back on the riverside. The new bridge now brings you out at Bowater rd next to the Thames Barrier. This road has been closed for many years, so to my delight, this old abandoned, beautiful Siemens bros building appeared before me.

The Siemens & Halske Company was founded in London in 1858 and in 1863 with continued expansion bought a piece of land on the Thames in Woolwich and built on it a cable factory, a mechanical workshop and stores. In 1865 Halske withdrew his support for the Company and William and Werner Siemens took over the assets and re-registered the business as Siemens Brothers, London. At it's height in the post war period the company employed 8000 people.

The business in Woolwich closed in 1968, some buildings were demolished & replaced with new prefabricated buildings which form part of the trading estate there. There are now plans to refurbish this grand old beautiful building into, yes you guessed it 'Luxury style living accommodation'

the meaning of 'bhuna'

an Indian dish or sauce in which spices are dry-roasted in a pan and then combined with a moistening agent such as yogurt or water.

the word 'bhuna' refers to the cooking method of this dish, and means 'to fry' or 'fried'. usually the spices are fried gently, before adding the meat.

originating in bengal, bhuna is a hot curry and doesn’t come swimming in sauce. it’s usually a thick sauce, with just enough to cling to the meat.

Walking alongside the Grand Union Canal in Small Heath, Birmingham, West Midlands.

The Grand Union Canal is essentially composed of no fewer than eight separate canals, and was built to link the major cities of London, Birmingham, Nottingham and Leicester. The most important part of this network of watery highways was the Grand Junction Canal. This was started at around 1793 in order to create a ‘short cut’ between Brentford, on the western outskirts of London to Braunston in Northamptonshire. Unlike many of its predecessors, the Grand Junction was constructed with 14 foot ‘wide locks’ meaning that for the first time, boats travelling down to London were able to be breasted up, side by side in the locks, making for a much speedier passage.

Until then, most canal freight had been travelling to London via the Oxford Canal, which only had narrow locks, and which was plagued with interruptions to its water supplies from the beginning.

That is not to say that the Grand Junction was not beset with problems of its own – the engineer, William Jessop, suffered almost insurmountable difficulties when trying to drive tunnels through the outcrops of ironstone encountered near Braunston and Blisworth. As a result, a temporary tramway was constructed over the hill at Blisworth, until the tunnel was finally able to be opened on 25th March 1805.

In those days, the only way of getting the boats through the 3000 yard tunnel was by ‘legging’ – a laborious practice involving two individuals lying on their back on a board across the boat, propelling the craft through the tunnel by effectively walking along the walls. Eventually, a steam tug was introduced, and this continued to operate until 1936.

With competition from the railways having taken a large share of traffic in the second half of the 19th century, improvements in roads and vehicle technology in the early part of the 20th century meant that the lorry was also becoming a threat to the canals. Tolls had been reduced to compete with the railways, but there was little scope for further reduction. The Regent's Canal and the Grand Junction Canal agreed that amalgamation and modernisation were the only way to remain competitive.

The Grand Union Canal in its current form came into being in 1929 and was further extended in 1932. It was formed from the amalgamation of several different canals, and at 286 miles, is by far the longest merged canal in the UK, whilst the Leeds & Liverpool Canal for being 127 miles (204 km) and having parts of the now-extinct southern end of the Lancaster Canal, is considered the longest single Canal in the UK.

The road alongside the edge of Loch Ailort was rough. It hadn’t rained for several days now, and the mud between the rough stones on the path was dry and firm under his feet as he led his pony, Somerled along the meandering route. It was still cold, and there was silvery groundfrost on the grass in the hollows and on the rust coloured bracken. This side of the sea loch was in shadow, darkness that had lasted months as the sun did not rise above the mountains surrounding the loch on three sides. He looked up: An Stac towering up above him, and caught sight of an eagle, it’s golden beak catching the light as it soared high above him. His toe stubbed on a stone on the track which was the only route from the north into his homeland in Moidart. Momentarily it made him look forward where he noticed a movement ahead. People ahead of him. He decided to quicken his pace to catch up with them, safer in numbers, and he would prefer the companionship rather than the loneliness he had endured on his seven day journey down from Halkirk in the northern county of Caithness.

Out of curiosity his eyes followed them as they walked ahead. Three of them. Rather noisy as they chattered as they walked. And then he realised: women. It pleased him. He enjoyed their company, especially if they were younger at heart and a little vibrant.

He saw, as they strode forward a large hare leap to its feet and dash out from the grass near their feet, so suddenly they gasped, as it ran behind them and across into some gorse off the left side of the track. Swinging round they saw the Highlander and his pony coming up the road behind them. He broke into a smile as they studied him as he approached. Likewise he was looking hard back at them wondering if they would welcome or shun him.

Close up he saw they were scruffier, dressed as if they spent a lot of time in the outdoors. But one of the three…she had blonde hair, looked like she made an effort occasionally. But the other two made him keep his distance a little. Their faces had been ravaged by the pox and the Highlander decided, even in those ancient times that social distancing was a good idea. But they seemed friendly and were keen to establish who he was and why he journeyed to Moidart. In fact, his mission was secret, and he explained instead , he was on his way to a funeral for a person who was not yet dead, and because of that he couldn’t name the person in case they found out. In reality his mission was top secret and he acted on orders from the court of King Louis X1V of France to organise logistical support for a young Scottish Prince. Indeed the Highlander carried a Charter that guaranteed him free passage through all the different clan lands and a heavy bag of gold florins.

Having introduced himself to the three women he enquired who they might be and where they might be headed without their menfolk. With much giggling they jointly announced that they were night cougars on their way to a rave at the Glenuig Inn and would celebrate the Winter’s Solstice there. The Highlander would have enquired where their menfolk were but decided against this. They were all dangerously loose of attachment and he decided again that social distancing might not be all that was needed to avoid the dreaded pox. Quickly he pulled his cloak across his face. Ha! Now they exclaimed, “You look like a sexy Highwayman! You’re coming to the party with us”

The Highlander awoke in the morning. His head hurt, and his balance was off. He felt sick. But he staggered up out of where he had slept amongst the wet, dewy grass and stood to suck in some fresh air. Later he had found out that they weren’t just some North Eastern cougars from Middlesbough, but in fact were witches. And now he was sure he had the pox.

London, United Kingdom - September 16, 2025: Shadow of a jogger on the National Covid Memorial Wall on the Albert Embankmemt, London. Created in 2021, the National Covid Memorial Wall is a visual representation of the UK's catastrophic loss to Covid-19. There are more than 240,000 individually hand-painted red hearts, each representing a person who died in the UK with Covid-19. The Wall runs alongside the River Thames, directly opposite the Houses of Parliament.

This peaceful location alongside the River Thames was photographed from the newly rebuilt toll bridge linking the village of Whitchurch in Oxfordshire with the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire. The scene might look better when leaves are on the trees so may try again later in the year!
