“Perlan – the Pearl – is an immersive museum that showcases Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes and nature in an accessible and engaging way. Its impressive hands-on, interactive exhibits and shows explain the country’s landforms, geology and wildlife. State-of-the-art technology elevates Perlan from an ordinary museum to one that guests will find innovative and memorable.

Alongside a fascinating display that focuses on the characteristics of Iceland’s changing glaciers, visitors can step into a hundred-metre-long artificial ice cave. An estimated 350 tons of snow gathered from Icelandic mountains were used in its construction. In graphic contrast, the museum’s Forces of Nature exhibit addresses the country’s volcanic systems and geothermal activity.

Styrmir, the museum’s spectacular indoor geyser, shoots a jet of water 25 metres into the air through the central atrium.

In Perlan’s domed 150-seat planetarium, the spotlight turns to the Aurora Borealis. Utilising 8K projection and 7.1 surround sound, the breathtaking Áróra show takes guests on a spellbinding journey through the origins and legends associated with the Northern Lights, bringing it vividly – and reliably – to life.

Perlan’s striking architecture adds an extra dimension to a visit. Located on Öskjuhlíð, the tallest hill in Reykjavik, it’s an easily recognised landmark, comprising six water tanks that support a glass dome which floods the interior with light. The museum’s wraparound observation deck offers an uninterrupted 360° panorama of the Icelandic capital and its surroundings.

Perlan represents Iceland in a nutshell. As such, it makes an ideal first or last stop on every tourist’s itinerary, whether they plan to venture beyond Reykjavik or choose to remain in the capital.”

150264 runs alongside the Taff Rhondda just outside Porth with the 1344 Treherbert to Cardiff Central service.

This view shows todays typical landscape of the lower Rhondda Valley. The river, the railway and the main road occupy centre stage on the valley floor, with housing and light industry surrounding.

The main valley (the Rhondda Fawr) continues straight ahead from the camera, with the community of Tonypandy visible. The river, road and railway continue to the right up to Treherbert.

Absent from this view are any obvious signs of coal mining. Between 1860 and 1939 the Rhondda Valleys were one of the worlds most important coal mining regions. At the start of the 20th century, there were over 70 mines or drifts in the valley. The last mine to close in the Rhondda valleys was Maerdy, which ceased raising coal in the Rhondda in 1986, after which coal was raised at Tower Colliery, over the mountain near Hirwaun.

The Rhondda, like most of the rivers in the Cardiff valleys was heavily polluted from coal mining. With the passing of the coal industry, today trout and even salmon have made a remarkable return to the river.

It is easy to slip into a parallel universe. There are so many of them: these worlds exist alongside this world and resemble it, but are not in it.

Stanier 3P No.40181 stored at Normanton MPD on 12th July 1963. Built in 1938 40181 was a 55D (Royston) loco for much of it's career, regularly working services on the former Midland Main Line, including stopping trains between Leeds and Sheffield via Normanton and Cudworth. 40181 was withdrawn on 30th March 1962 having moved to Normanton a month earlier. Crab 42702 is alongside and would be transferred to Ayr later that year for a further period of work until being withdrawn in 1966.

Clifton House is one of the few remaining 18th Century buildings surviving in Belfast; the city would become one of the world’s high-tech hothouses in the Victorian era, and the Georgian city was essentially demolished to make way for the new era.

This Grade A listed building was built 1771-4, originally as a poor house. In 1800 it played host to the first trials of inoculation and vaccination in Ireland. Today it is houses a heritage centre alongside a residential home and sheltered accommodation apartments. Some of those are operated by the Belfast Charitable Society, which originally built Clifton House, as is another nursing home a few hundred metres away at Carlisle Circus.

The last time I visited St Justinians in Pembrokeshire, Wales there was only one life boat station, which had existed since 1869. It closed in 2016 and during its active life the crews saved more than 360 lives at sea from 420 launches. It has been a listed building since 1992 which means it cannot be demolished or substantially altered without prior approval from the local authority.

Construction of the new station alongside began in 2014. It opened in 2016 and provided all the most modern equipment necessary to carry out rescue operations at sea.

Like several other essential rescue organizations in Great Britain, the RNLI is not funded by the Government and most of their revenue comes from charitable donations. The most important aspect of its operation are the staff who crew the lifeboats. Virtually all of them are volunteers who give up their time to go to the help of people in distress at sea. They can be called out when required 24 hours a day 365 days a year no matter what the weather. The bravery and commitment of the crews is undisputed. Selfless men and women all of them and as a society we are lucky to have them!

No. 116 "Sergej" with its new B level renovation, is traveling on railway line 50 with an empty grain train towards Bátaszék, Baja. The renovation of the locomotive was completed in mid-December 2023, with a painting and track number reminiscent of the 90s. This section of the railway line used to run alongside the telegraph pole in the bottom left corner of the picture, which was moved to the current alignment after a renovation in the early 1970s.

37259 runs alongside the Dovey Estuary as it passes Picnic Island at Penhelig with the 6W91 0905 Crewe Basford Hall - Tywyn autoballasters on 25th Jan 09....This was the last of three consecutive Sunday Cambrian engineering possessions which featured DRS tractors just south of Barmouth Bridge which were some of the last before the Network Rail 97s took over. Having been out in the small hours at Oakamoor ,i must have been keen and more able to stay awake, to have managed to drive out here the next morning on the off chance this would run.....so it was certainly a relief to see it come into sight round the coast.

VL80s-1981 awaits its next turn at the eastern end of the huge Temirtau Marshalling yards, Karaganda Oblast, Kazakhstan. May the 17th 2024.

ВЛ80с-1981 на станции Жанааул, Темитрау. Карагандинская область, Казахстан.

We do have one last plan for our final morning in Temirtau. As we never had any trouble there we will go to the Janaaul station and await the arrival of a morning commuter train, there is one shown as calling there on google earth. There is no timetable posted at the station and nothing at the terminus in Temirtau either. The terminus building has been given over to government tax office use and the train stops on grass covered tracks alongside coal wagons, we checked it out the afternoon prior. Driving out to the station we see a white electric suburban unit heading in the direction of Temirtau. We will sit it out and await its return. The yard tannoy sounds just before everytime something moves, which is generally the ChME3 on hump shunting movements, including the cutting off of the various wagons. The shouts - unintelligible to us - ricochet across the yards from the multiple speakers placed around the complex. It is quite phsycedelic in its own way and we amuse ourselves in our own solitary manner as we pass the time in the morning sun awaiting the white commuter train to return.
