Alongside the Chess Valley Walk, taken on my recent walk

These two photographs are a good way to show part of a walk I take. About 5 minutes walk from home is a small gate into the field, if you follow the fence on the far left to the top of the field, the gate can be seen just to the right. From there I walk alongside the hedge to another gate, under trees.

A flower alongside the Grade II Listed Victoria Footbridge, which crosses the River Wye, in Hereford Herefordshire.

The bridge had been suggested by Augustus C Edwards during a Public Meeting of Citizens in March 1897. The bridge was built in 1898 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria the previous year and opened by Right Hon the Lady Emily Foley in September 1898. It is a three-span suspension bridge carrying a public footway / cycleway over the River Wye close to Hereford city centre. Its history is highlighted at the Hereford Library and Museum.

In 2006, the local Hereford council allocated £725,000 to restore the footbridge to its original colours as well as reinforce various segments to ensure safety.

Taken during a fleeting moment of colour down at Vermillion Lakes the other morning. This location is one of the most popular owing mainly to the fact that it is positioned so closely to the town of Banff.

This small section of lake alongside another small section nearby never freezes due to it being a hot spring. This gives us photographers the perfect opportunity to capture mirror reflections of Mt Rundle while the sun rises to its left. We arrived on location a good hour or so before sunrise to ensure that we bagged our spots ahead of any other photographers.

This iconic, derelict fishing vessel rests peacefully alongside an old historic, 1881 fishing warehouse, in an old ghost fishing town that was built on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, Whatcom County, Washington

Semiahmoo Spit is a spit that protrudes from the westernmost expanse of shore on Semiahmoo Peninsula between Semiahmoo Bay and Drayton Harbor off the coast of Blaine in Whatcom County, Washington state. The spit is home to Semiahmoo Park

History

In 1858, prospectors came to the Semiahmoo area searching for the Fraser River. The spit seemed like a logical place to set up a post as a launching point for further exploration into the mainland. A trading post was soon established at the spit, and the owner drew up plans for Semiahmoo City. Semiahmoo was expected to become a migration boomtown, but it eventually developed into a fishing town, as the spit provided shelter for Drayton Harbor and an abundance of coastal resources. Whatcom County's first salmon cannery opened in 1881 in Semiahmoo; in 1891, the Alaska Packers Association was the largest salmon cannery in the world. Salmon canning was to be the main source of revenue in Semiahmoo until 1980, when the land was purchased by the land development corporation. Recently, a park with a small, seasonal interpretive center was built near the headland, and the Semiahmoo Resort and Golf Course was built near the spit.

Use of the spit by the Lummi Indian Nation, and current archaeological investigation

Because of its location, the spit provides access to countless resources that thrive in both the calm waters of Drayton Harbor, and the ocean currents through the Strait of Georgia. Historically, the Lummi Indian Nation used the spit for its natural resources; a major village was built on the spit. Today, shell midden is clearly visible in many places, on either side of the spit, as wave action has cut away at the shore, revealing historic artifacts.

Alongside the River Eau as it flows through the Scotter a village in West Lindsey, Lincolnshire.

Its catchment lies between that of the Bottesford Beck to the north, and the River Witham to the south and east, and covers an area of 125 square kilometres. The river is one of the few notable streams that drain the right bank of the tidal River Trent.

The source of the river is near Harpswell, at the foot of the Lincolnshire Edge, and it joins the Trent at Susworth. Unlike other rivers that drain into the Trny, there is no pumping station associated with the outfall, it relies on gravity to discharge during periods of tidal low water.

The river is also important for the drainage of the flat low-lying agricultural land that surrounds it, with some 2000 hectares or 20 square kilometres of the Gainsborough Internal Drainage Board district, relying on the Eau for this function. Whilst the drains that discharge into the Eau are maintained by the Drainage Board, the river is the responsibility of the Environment Agency being designated as a Main river.

The Germans had pulled up alongside me in their ancient Mercedes G-Wagon and leaning across the driver said in halting English, "I vont to ask you ze question!" I was expecting a question as they were looking a little lost, but I wasn't prepared for the tone which only inclined me to reply, "You vont to interrogate me, no?

Well, anyway they wanted directions for the beach, which surprised me. Smirisary beach is not your normal seaside beach. It's just a little bit off the beaten track. All the same I hurried on the way, keen to get there first before they could get their towel on the sand befote me. Well, the path, if you can call it a path, is a boggy trail over hill and dale, over the rugged Ardnamurchan mountainside that tumbles down to the rocky coast. It's quite a trek down through remnants of the ancient coastal rainforest, down amongst the smattering of stone cottages and ruins and off where the route is hewn out of the rocky hillside, tripping and tumbling over jutting stones and rocks, through black and stinky bogs, the first sight of the pristine sandy beach is such a relief. It might be the only safe place to pull a boat up to the shore, and with no road within miles, I was mindful of the local inhabitants a hundred years ago who would have had to carry all their supplies and provisions over the same route to their cottages, including the 100 kilo cast iron ovens and three piece suites that Mrs N ordered. We might moan about life today but Life was really hard in those days

The Waverley draws alongside HMM Gaon in the Solent.

Waverley is the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world.

Built in 1946, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrochar on Loch Long until 1973. Bought by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, she has been restored to her 1947 appearance and now operates passenger excursions around the British coast.

Since 2003 Waverley has been listed in the National Historic Fleet by National Historic Ships UK as “a vessel of pre-eminent national importance.”

The Common Blue is the most widely distributed of the blues and is found from sea level to mountainsides throughout Britain and Ireland, except for Shetland. Occurring in a wide range of habitats - including damp, flowery meadows, heaths and woodland glades - it is also frequent in urban areas, alongside verges, on uncultivated waste ground and in gardens.

Damage alongside the banks of the River Don after winter floods.

Images from walks along the River Don.

Yorkshire's River Don is a river that has suffered over 200 years of industrial abuse, only to be declared biologically dead in the 1960's. Nowadays with the loss of heavy industries i.e. coal mines, power stations, steel works ,mills , factories and concerted efforts by environmental groups the River Don is now a river of fish and wild life.

Photographed the Anhinga drying it's feather on a dead tree trunk in the Banana Creek Marsh alongside the Alligator Alley trail located in the Circle B Bar Reserve in the City of Lakeland in Polk County Florida U.S.A.

Anhingas are large and slender waterbirds with long fan like tails that resemble a turkey's tail. They have a long S-shaped neck and a dagger like bill. In flight, Anhingas look like a flying cross; the wings are held out flat and the neck and tail stick straight out. They have slim bodies and look rather flattened in flight.

The derelict platelayers hut alongside the track makes an interesting addition to the scene. These huts used to be spaced around every two miles and would be the base for a man to take care of the track, on his patch, housing tools and components.

This historic engine was built as GER no. 564 and left Stratford Works on 22 February 1912. It spent most of its working life in Norfolk and Suffolk. In 1922 and 1936 it was allocated to Norwich Thorpe and also spent time at Yarmouth. After the grouping, the loco was renumbered 7564, then 5462 in November 1946. In October it was transferred to Lowestoft and stayed here for 13 years. In 1949, as a consequence of the nationalisation of British Railways, it became 65462. Both the LNER and BR painted the Ioco plain black.

65462 was allocated to Norwich Thorpe in June 1960 and then moved to Stratford in January 1961. In January 1962, 65462 was retubed at Stratford, before joining the few other remaining London based J15s on standby and Liverpool Street station pilot duties.

The last four J15s (including 65462) were finally withdrawn on 16th September 1962, when steam was eliminated from East Anglia. Source: www.nnrailway.co.uk/portfolio-items/ger-y14-564/

Sometimes, a single photograph can pull you right into the heart of a place. You don't need a famous landmark or a sweeping panorama. Sometimes, all it takes is a snapshot of an ordinary street, bathed in that unique local light, to perfectly capture a city's essence.

That's the magic of a photo like the one pictured above – a simple, yet profoundly evocative, Lisbon street scene. It feels authentically aged, yet vibrantly alive. Lisbon doesn't hide its wrinkles; it wears them with pride. The faded paint, the worn cobblestones, the slightly crooked lines – they speak of centuries of history, of sailors and poets, Fado and revolution. Yet, this history isn't confined to museums. It lives and breathes alongside a contemporary buzz, a creative energy that you feel in the air. Love it-)))))
