The alignment of Mars this time was during a full moon!

The last time this alignment occurred was August 29, 2003 when the mars hoax made it’s way through the news.

Sequence similarities between nucleoside triphosphate pyrophosphohydrolases (NTPHs) in bacteria and fungi.(A) Multiple sequence alignment of the only three fungal NTPHs in GenBank with those of two bacteria. FGSG_09100, FPSE_06770, BN850_0056610, BN851_0055940 and NECHADRAFT_93899 are sequences from Fusarium graminearum, F. pseudograminearum, F. sp. FIESC5, F. acuminatum and F. solani f. sp. pisi, respectively SPAM21_09323 and A989_00935 are sequences from Salinibacterium sp. strain PAMC21357 and Xanthomonas translucens DAR61454 respectively. (B) Phylogenetic analysis of the NTPH protein sequence found in Fusarium spp. and bacteria. The Fusarium and Xanthomonas clades are shaded with all other sequences from bacteria. Analysis was conducted at phylogeny.fr as detailed in the methods. Numbers on each branch indicate support for that branching based on approximate likelihood ratio tests.

Here you can see the inside of the yoke. I use a split yoke on my shirts to make sure all stripes run exactly parallel to the shoulder seam.

Have to take care that this pin isn't damaged when removing the lens group.

"Shirshasana alignment pose"

Shirshasana, Salamba Shirshasana, or Yoga Headstand is an inverted asana in modern yoga as exercise; it was described as both an asana and a mudra in classical hatha yoga, under different names. It has been called the king of all asanas.

The moon, mars and venus (not sure, but this is my guess) were lined up tonight.

Wish I had a gorgeous SLR and a tripod so I could capture this properly, but it didn't come out too shabbily for my poor ol' camera (just 'shopped it a bit to make it clearer!)

Ah, technology...

This is an actual installation of DuPont's "Tuscan Stone Bronze" stone-look laminate flooring. To eliminate "grout lines" going without a break from one end of the room to the other, which kills the illusion that it's real stone, some of the "stones" don't have grout lines at the edge of the plank -- they will match up with a similar un-grouted stone on another plank to create bigger, complete stones that extend across planks in both directions, IF YOU LINE THEM UP CORRECTLY! (The horizontal lines in the ovals here are the long edges of the boards. The top board here should move one small block to the left to make a giant 2 x 4 block at the top ellipse; the bottom board should move one block to the right to create a 2 x 2 block.) People, really -- I figured this out from scratch on the second row of the first job I ever did with this.

Seeing an early-morning dazzling display up in the heavens over the city. I had to put my alarm just to wake up for this lol. Surely, the moon & 3 planets have put on a show at the end of 2018. This morning on Sunday, December 30, 2018, the waning crescent moon, Venus & Jupiter have aligned almost in a perfect line & were visible just an hour before sunrise. Mercury was also a part of this dazzling alignment but it was too faint and too close to the horizon to be able to see. It was surely a nice way to end the year with a bang, astronomy-wise, despite the big setback & postponement of the much-awaited Delta IV Heavy Rocket... Have a nice & safe new year, everyone! Stay warm out there... Pic taken from around San Jose, CA.

Shot at the Oceano Dunes, California. Just as I was getting ready to depart, I turned and saw this dancing cloud seemingly standing on its head, directly in alignment with the crest of a dune.

After two days of internet crawl that reminded me of dial-up circa 1995 the techs showed up to realign my antennae.

Here you see Cesar on the roof sighting the antennae with the transmission tower while his assistant looks on.

A couple of contract workers had been out to "upgrade" the antennae about three weeks ago and they apparently left a screw or two loose. The recent upsurge in the wind the past few days was enough to knock it off center.

Everything is working fine now.

I was hoping they would get here earlier in the day while the light was more favorable.

The ladies head towards the tyres

Ladies Motoring Evening with Annette Carey of The White Room, Chelmsford Carriage Company, and Drinks of France.

Here is an old-school tire shop in the city of Hollister, population 41,678. Photographically, I like the look of an old tire shop, but I never get a good picture. This one's good enough.

The fact that they handle "alignment" is a really weak jumping point (Covid brain fog) to discuss Hollister's place in the world of geology, because there are some fairly significant things going on here.

This town is one of the best places in the world to observe something called "aseismic creep." That does not refer to somebody who stalks but not in an earthshaking way. It refers to smoother-than-normal sliding movement along a transform fault, otherwise known as a strike-slip fault. You know, like the San Andreas I talked about several weeks ago. In Hollister's case, the San Andreas is about five miles west of town, but there's a branching fault called the Calaveras that runs right through here. And while most of the San Andreas moves in fits and starts, stuttering along in big earthquakes that release a lot of built-up stress all at once, the Calaveras releases that stress constantly, in a slow, creeping, constant movement. In short, the fault never gets stuck in a way that winds up jumping 20 feet in 45 seconds. It slides more gently along a few millimeters per year. It flows.

This means the Calaveras Fault, in its current condition, won't experience some big break that rattles the entire state with a 7.0 on the Richter Scale. But it also means that there are streets in town that are slowly but constantly moving past each other. Streets wind up offset. Curbs and sidewalks break. Houses get twisted, if they're built in the wrong spot.

I don't have a picture of any of this, because we didn't want to devote the time into looking for it. If I ever come back here, I'll hunt that down.
