The man stood atop the hill behind the Queen Mansion, planning his revenge.
He’d spent the last 30 years honing his skills, preparing for this moment. He was getting a little older now, a little slower, but the Marikuru in his system kept him going.
Ever since the Island with Oliver Queen, he’d been searching for revenge for humiliating him and leaving him for dead. After their fight, Oliver had left him bleeding out on the ground, going to light the fires to alert the ships. It would have taken him forever to get off the island again, waiting for another ship, but then…
But then.
The man stopped, chuckled to himself darkly, and started making his way down the hill, living half in real life, half in memory-Queen and him had fought on a hill similar to this, right before he was bested for the first-and last-time. Already a killing machine, after the League of Assassins had recruited him, he’d become nearly invincible, leaving a trail of bodies wherever he went.
He stood outside the stately tan doorway, looking in the windows. He knew Queen was already dead-cancer had taken care of that-but there was a son, Connor, who he was hoping might get caught in the crossfire.
He breathed in deeply and kicked down the door. He stepped into the massive parlor.
He made his way through the house, looking for it almost obsessively, sure it was here somewhere. Not the kitchen. Not the office. Not the dining room. Finally, he came upon the library. He smiled to himself, looking at the collection of books.
Then he reached into his belt, pulled out a grenade, and threw it at the bookshelf, blowing it to pieces. There stood a metal doorway. A few laser cuts here and there, and next thing he knew, he was in the layer.
He stepped in and wandered around through training rooms and computer rooms when finally he found it-the Island Room. It was like he was transported back in time, as memories flooded his brain. There stood the yellow Helmet of Fate that had killed his commander. And there was the box of the meteor rock from the Smallville Storm a few decades ago. And-a chill ran through his spine-there stood what was rightfully his: the Komodo’s Mask.
He walked up to it, hardly daring to believe it was there, which was ridiculous: it was, after, all, what he had come for. He put his hands around the shiny, cold metal, disturbing the dust that had collected on it in its decades of just sitting there. He picked it up and put it on. It felt as if nothing had passed since the last time he’d worn it, on the island…
Today’s nature walk in Central Tucson revealed this alert mourning dove high above us in a large mesquite tree. It was a beautiful bright sunshiny day🌞

Obviously alerted to the crunching of leaves and branches beneath my feet. This human was not like any other passerby. He was holding some large, black thing. And it was pointed directly at home.

Back in 2005, Ken & I both worked as subcontractors to NASA. A work friend discovered this in the basement of the building we worked in - Building 4610 - on Redstone Arsenal/Huntsville, Alabama. (incidentally the building my Dad worked in as a NASA employee), and we went down to look!
Robot alert! We "think" he was on loan from the Alabama Space & Rocket Center, as a fun exhibit. Made me think of WALL-E.
