This post introduces another great piece of gear I've started using since last year: the Olympus Telescopic Auto Tube 65-116. It's very compact and works extremely well especially with a CSC camera like Sony NEX.

The subject is a Gymnosoma sp. fly. The almost white background is created by the clouds. The exposure was a bit tricky, I've manually overexposed by 1.7 EV.

So against all hope, I went to String Lake to shoot dawn. After a bit, a couple shows up and the guy asks, "Do you mind if she goes into the lake?" Now it is 29 degrees, according to the car, and she's going to wade out into the lake? I'm 100% okay with it. She has the blanket and is maybe 5' 5" and blonde and glasses. Yeah, I want to see this. She puts on waders and in she goes. I couldn't resist a few shots. It turns out her husband is an artist and she is a stand-in for what will be a Native American woman. I'm pretty sure that I've never met a Native American who would stand in 29 degree water, but be that as it may, it ought to be an interesting painting.

This grizzly cub, the size of a cocker spaniel, became separated from its mother last summer. It spent one month alone, in a very hostile environment, trying to survive. Cubs usually nurse for two years, so it was remarkable this 6 month old cub was living only on roots & berries. Against the odds, mother & cub reunited after weeks apart. The cub would not have survived winter alone, so I was so happy when they reconnected.

This little one will be emerging from its den soon. In the wild there's seldom happy endings for the weak & vulnerable. I'm happy this time was different. I'm hopeful that I will see this cub, known as Pepper, again this spring. <3

I look forward to photographing my Goats Beard seedheads every year, but they seem to wait until I'm just about to go out, and then... ta dah!

They don't last long, I bought it indoors but I think if I take it outside now, it will explode, seeds everywhere. Time Bomb?!!

Shot in the Dutch nature resort "Biesbosch". The magnificent Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), lower left, is the absolute ruler of the area. Nevertheless, a much smaller Buzzard (Buteo buteo), upper right, challenged the Eagle because it entered his domain. The Eagle showed no sign of even spotting his opponent.

Shot in low light, shutter priority (1/60th), without a tripod because it was only about 4 inches off the ground.

I was actually laying on the ground and used the ground to help stabilize. I have a battery pack and I kept the tripod plate on the camera so I had the lens well of the ground. The background is really a terra cotta pot but "against the pot" didnt sound right :)

In PSE I added a couple of layers - Soft light to bring out the background color and deepen the purple. Then I adjusted the levels to lighten the purple. I took out the distracting green in the bottom right corner. Finally I added a gradient to put vignetting on the right side too. For the gradient I used the oval selection tool to select all around the center portion. Then I inverted the selection and choose gradient. The gradient went from black to the deep red background, right to left, 150%. It was a little dark so I put the opacity at 80%.

I shot 18 pictures of this flower and ended up using the first one :)
