Notes: Baron Louis Adolphe Humbert de Molard, born in Paris on October 30, 1800 and died on March 17, 1874, was a French pioneer of photography. From the beginning of the 1840s, Baron Humbert de Molard became interested in the first photographic techniques. He is one of those wealthy amateurs who were passionate about this emerging art. After the death of his first wife, he remarried in 1843 with Henriette Renée Patu, miniaturist designer and lithographer, who owned land in Lagny-sur-Marne. From 1843 to 1850, he produced a series of daguerreotypes but gradually favored the calotype technique , which he experimented with from 1844. He was partly trained by his friend Hippolyte Bayard . He used other techniques, such as albumen printing and wet collodion . He came into contact with Abel Niépce de Saint-Victor to try to improve certain processes and then became the defender of the development techniques promoted by Gustave Le Gray. His productions have remarkable pictorial qualities and reveal a great mastery of the technical stages (lighting, emulsion, development). He staged activities related to the peasant world, as well as several gender figures, helped by his steward and model named Louis Dodier. In 1854, he was a founding member of the Société française de photographie and sought to promote various techniques of development on paper from negatives and resigned in 1864 for health reasons. He published his research between 1851 and 1866 in the journal La Lumière, which was for a time the bulletin of the Société héliographique de Paris. (Source: Wikipedia)

Having already made a fortune in the cycle industry Gustave-Adolphe Clement launched the Clement-Gladiator-Humber company in 1896 with a float capitol of 22 million French francs. The Humber connection was soon severed, but in 1898 the company began manufacture of Clement and Gladiator cars, at a new facility in Levallois-Perret, Seine. From 1898 he was also a director of Panhard Levassor, when the Panhard factory could not meet the production of around 500 units in 1898 he undertook manufacture under the make name of Clement-Panhard
Clements were even produced under licence in the UK in Scotland by Stirling of Hamilton
Early cars were light cars powered by, Astor, Panhard engines
In October 1903 Clement left the company which was taken over by Harvey DuCross (Dunlop tyres), and as terms of the agreement barred from making cars under his own name. He therefore changed his name to Clement-Bayard after a Chevalier who's statue stood outside his factory at Mezieres. Initially the Clement-Bayard was similar to the Gladiator, until a more up to date range was launched in 1907.

In Paris, but also throughout Europe, there is emotion. The City of Paris pays tribute to the victims of this evening with a ceremony at Notre-Dame then a monument dedicated to the Père Lachaise cemetery.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau, L’Aurore (Dawn), 1881
oil on canvas, 84 5/8 x 42 1/8 inches (Birmingham Museum of Art)
Museum description: "Aurora, or Dawn, was one of Bouguereau’s most acclaimed works. It is the first in a series of canvases representing the four Times of Day: the others were Dusk in 1882; Night in 1883; and Day in 1884. Allegorical representations of the four Times of Day date back at least to the Renaissance period. Bouguereau’s Times of Day are a study in complements and contrasts; when viewed together they reveal harmonies of line, form, and color. They exemplify his standards of ideal beauty and feminine grace in the 1880s."

Antoine-Joseph Sax was born on 6 November 1814, in Dinant, in what is now Belgium, to Charles-Joseph Sax and his wife Marie-Joseph (Masson). While his given name was Antoine-Joseph, he was referred to as Adolphe from childhood. His father and mother were instrument designers themselves, who made several changes to the design of the French horn. Adolphe began to make his own instruments at an early age, entering two of his flutes and a clarinet into a competition at the age of 15. He subsequently studied performance on those two instruments as well as voice at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He was Jewish.
Sax faced many brushes with death. Over the course of his childhood, he:
fell from a height of three floors, hit his head on a stone and could barely stand afterwards.
at the age of three, drank a bowl full of acidic water and later swallowed a pin.
burnt himself seriously in a gunpowder explosion.
fell onto a hot cast-iron frying pan, burning his side.
survived an accidental poisoning from keeping varnished items in his bedroom during the night.
was hit on the head by a rock
fell into a river and nearly died.
His mother once said that "he's a child condemned to misfortune; he won't live." His neighbors called him "little Sax, the ghost".
After leaving the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Sax began to experiment with new instrument designs, while his parents continued their business of making conventional instruments. Sax's first important invention was an improvement in bass clarinet design which he patented at the age of 24. He relocated permanently to Paris in 1842 and began working on a new set of valved bugles. While he did not invent this instrument, his examples were much more successful than those of his rivals and became known as saxhorns. Hector Berlioz was so enamoured of these that he arranged in February 1844 for one of his pieces to be played entirely on saxhorns. They were made in seven different sizes and paved the way for the creation of the flugelhorn. Today, saxhorns are sometimes used in concert bands, marching bands, and orchestras. The saxhorn also laid the groundwork for the modern euphonium.
Sax also developed the saxotromba family, valved brass instruments with narrower bore than the saxhorns, in 1845, though they survived only briefly.
The use of saxhorns spread rapidly. The saxhorn valves were accepted as state-of-the-art in their time and remain largely unchanged today. The advances made by Adolphe Sax were soon followed by the British brass band movement which exclusively adopted the saxhorn family of instruments. The Jedforest Instrumental Band formed in 1854 and The Hawick Saxhorn Band formed in 1855, within the Scottish Borders, a decade after saxhorn models became available.
The period around 1840 saw Sax inventing the clarinette-bourdon, an early unsuccessful design of contrabass clarinet. On 28 June 1846 he patented the saxophone, intended for use in orchestras and military bands. By 1846 Sax had designed saxophones ranging from sopranino to subcontrabass although not all were built. Composer Hector Berlioz wrote approvingly of the new instrument in 1842 but despite his support saxophones did not become a standard part of the orchestra. Their ability to play technical passages easily like woodwinds yet project loudly like brass instruments led to their inclusion in military bands in France and elsewhere. His reputation helped secure him a job teaching at the Paris Conservatory in 1857.
Sax continued to make instruments later in life and presided over the new saxophone program at the Paris Conservatory. Rival instrument makers both attacked the legitimacy of his patents and were sued by Sax for patent infringement. These legal troubles continued for over 20 years. He was driven into bankruptcy three times: in 1852, 1873, and 1877.
Sax suffered from lip cancer between 1853 and 1858 but made a full recovery. In 1894 he died in poverty in Paris and was interred in section 5 (Avenue de Montebello) at the Cimetière de Montmartre in Paris.

"Adolphe Bridge is an arch bridge in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. The bridge takes road traffic across the Pétrusse, connecting Boulevard Royal, in Ville Haute, to Avenue de la Liberté, in Gare. At 17.2 m wide, it carries four lanes of road traffic, three to Gare and a bus lane to Ville Haute, and has two footpaths for pedestrians.
Adolphe Bridge has become an unofficial national symbol of sorts, representing Luxembourg's independence, and has become one of Luxembourg City's main tourist attractions. The bridge was designed by Paul Séjourné, a Frenchman, and Paul Rodange, a Luxembourger, and was built between 1900 and 1903. Its design was copied in the construction of Walnut Lane Bridge in Philadelphia, the United States." (source: Wikipedia)
