Saint-Adolphe-d'Howard

William-Adolphe Bouguereau,

Oil on Canvas. 1874

Before I became interested in art, I attended an exhibition of W.A. Bouguereau at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. I was mesmerized from the beginning and remain so whenever I see his art. Before the pandemic, I was blessed to have another opportunity when the San Diego Museum of Art hosted an exhibition of his work. I chose this painting and photographed it in sections. This girl is so perfect in my eyes that I chose to make it a portrait. I added my interpretation in editing. The original of this painting can be seen at www.bouguereau.org/Enfant-Tressant-Une-Couronne-Child-Bra...

The fabulous city of Dinant in the Meuse Valley, Belgium. The city is the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone.

The symmetry of this hanging bridge underneath that big bridge in Luxembourg city is great. I was happy nobody walked or cycled passed when I took this photo.

Antoine-Joseph "Adolphe" Sax was a Belgian inventor and musician who invented the saxophone in the early 1840s, patenting it in 1846. He also invented the saxotromba, saxhorn and saxtuba, and redesigned the bass clarinet in a fashion still used to the present day. He played the flute and clarinet.

The Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg City is a 16th century Renaissance style building and the city residence of the Grand Duke, Head of State of Luxembourg since 1890. It is located in the center of the old town, not far from Place Guillaume II.

Since the accession of Grand Duke Adolphe in 1890, the Grand Ducal Palace has served as the official residence of the sovereign after this building was City Hall from 1572 to 1795, seat of the prefecture of the Department of Forests in 1795, and finally residence of the Governor, representative of the King Grand Duke of the Netherlands in 1817. As such it was used by Prince Henri, lieutenant-representative of William III in Luxembourg.

Under the reign of Grand Duke Adolphe, the Grand Ducal Palace was completely transformed and a new wing, the Baden wing, was added to the courtyard. It houses the rooms of the Grand Ducal family and the guest rooms. It was built by the Brussels architect Gédéon Bordiau, assisted by the state architect Charles Arendt.

During the Second World War, the German occupiers used the Grand Ducal Palace to organize concerts and set up a tavern, the “Schlossschenke”. A complete renovation (1992-1996) restored the building to its former splendor.

The old part, between the two towers, is in Renaissance style, the middle part, in Baroque style, was remodeled in 1891 in Renaissance style.

Jules Adolphe Breton ~ French

Reproduced using various softwares including Topaz

Breton was interested in themes of social realism.

Many of his paintings, like this one, show peasants working in the fields.

The sunset, as well as the activity of gleaning, the final gathering of remnants of wheat that marks the end of the harvest, can be seen as a metaphor for the passage of time.

Breton’s inclusion of a young girl, a mature woman, and an elderly gleaner reinforce this theme.

Two hands adjusting a tie, a mouth that we can imagine is ready to smile, topped with a mustache and eyes that are now forever closed. “Le Chibani”, a fresco by the artist Vince who has adorned a building in Malakoff since 2016, is well known to motorists who pass by the Porte de Châtillon, on the ring road. Here she is orphaned by her model: Mohand Dendoune, the old man who lent her his features, died Friday morning at the threshold of his 91 years.

Adolphe Sax

One of the most famous inhabitants of Dinant is Adolphe Sax; the inventor of the saxophone was born in this city. That Dinant is proud of this famous inventor, is evident from the fact that you see Monsieur Sax everywhere in the city; there is a street and square named after him. On the square stands - how could it be otherwise - a giant saxophone. If you visit the house of Adolphe Sax, you will be met for this museum by monsieur Sax in his own person.

Adolphe Sax

Leffe: voortreffelijk ambachtelijk streekbier

Saint Adolphe d'Howard

The Shepherdess, is a painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau completed in 1889. This painting is always intriguing when I visit the Philbrook Art Museum in Tulsa. The tones colors and presentation of this work is always captivating. Looking at her eyes, I can only imagine the strokes of the brush catching the light of 1889 as William looked into the eyes of The Shepherdess and she looked at the painter. Now that I live next to Tulsa I can go over and capture this masterpiece anytime.

Sunrise over Notre-Dame, viewed from Adolphe bridge, Luxembourg

The Adolphe was a sailing ship that was wrecked at the mouth of the Hunter River in New South Wales, Australia, in 1904. The ship is now the most prominent of several wrecks on what is now the Stockton breakwall, which protects Newcastle harbour. The rescue of the ship's crew has gone down in local maritime history as one of the most remarkable in local waters.
