The Postcard
A Hall's Photo Series postcard which was posted in Godstone on Monday the 1st. September 1913 to:
Miss Boarder,
Ministry of Health,
Delaware Road,
Maida Vale,
London W.
The message on the back of the card was as follows:
"I don't know what you thought
of me last Wed, running off with
the change from the flowers!
I will put it right when I return.
The rain seems rather pitiless,
but hope to get a little sunshine
before I return.
Hope you are not having too
much work,
L."
The Enterdent
The Enterdent is a small parcel of land between Tilburstow Hill Road and Eastbourne Road to the south of Godstone. The origin of the name has never been satisfactorily explained.
Célestin Pégoud
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 1st. September 1913, Célestin Pégoud flew the first-ever inverted flight.
Adolphe Célestin Pégoud (13th. June 1889, Montferrat, France – 31st. August 1915) was a French aviator and flight instructor who became the first fighter ace in history during World War I.
Pégoud served in the French Army from 1907 to 1913. Discharged on the 13th. February 1913, he immediately began flying. Using a sacrifice aircraft, Pégoud was the first pilot to make a parachute jump from an aeroplane.
During the jump, observing the unexpected path of the plane, and particularly a loop-like trajectory, he was convinced he could reproduce and control the same in flight. After landing, Pégoud addressed reporters:
"I've seen the plane, alone, looping
the loop.
So you see that this is possible.
Also, I will try!"
As a test pilot for Louis Blériot, he devoted himself to this goal with a Blériot model XI monoplane in a series of test flights exploring the limits of airplane manoeuvres. Having modified his airplane, on the 21st. September he flew a loop, believing it to be the world's first.
Pégoud's feat was consequently widely publicized and believed by many to be the first loop, although in fact Pyotr Nesterov, a Russian army pilot, had already flown the first loop on the 9th. September 1913, in a Nieuport IV monoplane at an army airfield near Kiev.
Soon after his feat, Pégoud was invited by the Czar of Russia to perform in Moscow a series of demonstrations followed by student training. Pégoud then became a popular instructor of French and other European fledgling pilots.
At the start of the Great War, Pégoud volunteered for flying duty, and was immediately accepted as an observation pilot. On the 5th. February 1915, he and his gunner were credited with shooting down two German aircraft and forcing another to land. Soon he was flying single-seat aircraft, and in April claimed two further victories. His sixth success came in July.
Pégoud was the first pilot to achieve ace status of any sort.
On the 31st. August 1915, Pégoud was shot down and killed by one of his pre-war German students, Unteroffizier Otto Kandulski, while intercepting a German reconnaissance aircraft. He was 26 years old.
The same German crew later dropped a funeral wreath behind the French lines.

COFFEE (Coffee arabica)
Coffee, which originated in the highlands of Ethiopia, was introduced into Jamaica in 1728 by Sir Nicholas Lawes, a former governor who planted it at his Temple Estate in St. Andrew. Jamaica’s coffee production is low by world standards (approximately 2.72 million kg) but it ranks high internationally in quality and flavor especially that grown on the slopes of the Blue Mountains which commands a high price on the world market. Coffee labeled “Blue Mountain” has to be grown within a 16km radius of the Peak. The other generic category of coffee is Jamaica Prime, grown on the mountains of the central parishes but outside the Blue Mountain range. Most of Jamaica’s coffee is exported and cheaper varieties imported and blended for local consumption. Japan is Jamaica’s best market for unroasted coffee and the Japanese are involved with the expansion of the industry. The Coffee Industry Board established by the government in 1950, is the centralized facility for processing and quality control.
Coffee berries which contain the coffee bean, are produced by several species of small evergreen bush of the genus ‘Coffea’. The two most commonly grown species are ‘Coffea canephora’ (also known as ‘Coffee robusta’ and ‘Coffee arabica’ (which is the type grown in Jamaica). Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed and dried. The seeds are then roasted, undergoing several physical and chemical changes. They are roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor. They are then ground and brewed to create coffee [drink]
Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is a classification of coffee grown in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. The best lots of Blue Mountain coffee are noted for their mild flavor and lack of bitterness. Over the last several decades, this coffee has developed a reputation that has made it one of the most expensive and sought-after coffees in the world. In addition to its use for brewed coffee, the beans are the flavor base of Tia Maria coffee liqueur.

The Hôtel des Invalides commonly called Les Invalides is a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, France, containing museums and monuments, all relating to the military History of France, as well as a hospital and an old soldiers’ retirement home, the building's original purpose. The buildings house the Musée de Armée, the museum of the Army of France, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, and the Musée d’Histoire Contemporaine. The complex also includes the Cathedral of Saint-Louis-des-Invalides, the national cathedral of the French military. It is adjacent to the Royal Chapel known as the Dôme des Invalides, the tallest church building in Paris at a height of 107 meters. The latter has been converted into a shrine to some of France's leading military figures, most notably the tomb of Napoleon.
Napoleon's tomb (French: tombeau de Napoléon) is the monument erected at Les Invalides to keep the remains of Napoleon following their repatriation to France from Saint Helena in 1840 at the initiative of King Louis Philippe I and his minister Adolphe Thiers. While the tomb's planning started in 1840, it was not completed until two decades later and inaugurated by Emperor Napoleon III on April 2 1861, after its promoter Louis Philippe I, architect Louis Visconti, and main sculptors James Pradier and Pierre-Charles Simart had all died in the meantime.

The story of Cupid and Psyche was one of Bouguereau’s favorite myths. He painted several works inspired from this legend, such as The Rapture of Psyche, Psyche and Cupid, and Psyche. The myth of Cupid and Psyche first appears written in The Golden Ass of Lucius Apuleius in the 2nd century AD. In the story, Psyche is a beautiful princess of whom the goddess Venus is jealous. In her rage she orders her son cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster, but Cupid falls in love with her himself. After several trials Cupid and Psyche make their plea to the gods who turn Psyche into an immortal and allow them to be married in heaven (British Library). In this painting Bouguereau was inspired to paint the two lovers together as children. Demonstrating that fate its self-had a hand in there meeting. They were born to be together. The subtle paint handling captures the children’s innocence and illustrates to the viewer that Cupid's original attraction to Psyche was not purely physical, but also platonic, for the innocence of childhood does not allow for anything else. You cannot have true love without also having a mutual trust and respect, and a relaxed and enduring companionship between lovers. Cupid and Psyche’s union then is not just physical: they are soul mates and complement each other eternally.
