Bougurreau is one of the few prominent academic artists of late 19th century France whose reputation has endured following the rise of Impressionism.

This work shows a beautiful peasant girl, barefoot, her sleeves rolled up, seated on a stone bench. On a tree branch behind her shoulder a nightingale sings, and she turns her head to hear it. What her thoughts may be are hard to determine, and this ambiguity was one of the reasons for Bougurreau's success.

Notes: Photograph of a full-length portrait of Victoria, Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria, by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The sitter is depicted as wearing a dark-colored dress and a lace cap, while holding a bunch of flowers to her side. The painting is shown here as being displayed above a settee in an opulently decorated room.

André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri (1819 - 1889) a self-taught daguerreotypist, researched and improved upon the existing collodion-on-glass negative process, which he outlined in his first publication, Manuel Opératoire de Photographie sur Collodion Instantané, 1853. That same year, he returned to Paris and opened the largest studio in Paris, which spread across two floors. It was there that he introduced his carte-de-visite portraits which were a great financial success. For the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle, he formed the Société du Palais de l'Industrie and obtained the rights to photograph all the products and works of art exhibited at the Exposition. Eder writes "Disdéri was considered the outstanding portrait photographer of his time in Paris. Napoleon III appointed him court photographer. In 1861, he instructed French officers in photography under orders from the minister of war. Disdéri's popularity is best shown by the fact that his character was introduced in 1861 as a star attraction on the stage of a small vaudeville theater in Paris by a realistic representation featuring his bald head and tremendous beard."

Adolphe Martial Thabard, Le Charmeur de serpents, 1875

I now know the name of this statue and its creator. I am more cultured than before but it hasn't changed much to me! In fact, the name of the statue has taken some mystery (charm?) from the posture of the statue, which still makes me think of spanking rather than a snake charmer! [rb_131115_1000019.jpg]

Work of:

William-Adolphe Bouguereau

French Academic Classicist Artist

Genre Painter

1825 – 1905

Few artists embody the ideals of French Academic painting as perfectly as does Bouguereau. This industrious artist covered a variety of themes in his work, ranging from sober Biblical stories to wild bacchanals, peasant girls, and portraits, all depicted in a smooth, seamless style. His impeccable craft and ability to combine realism with idealized form won him many admirers and a long list of honors. As a teacher at the Académie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Bouguereau was a revered taskmaster and leader of establishment forces against the innovations of modernism.

In Return of Spring, all the qualities that won Bouguereau acclaim are fully apparent. Plainly referring to Raphael’s famous Galatea, the waking nymph is clearly drawn and modeled to a porcelain-like finish. The three trios of cupids that whirl around her in a garland of flying flesh are exercises in anatomical virtuosity, showing essentially the same figure in a variety of poses. Bouguereau pronounced himself “really thrilled with this . . . painting; the attitude and expression of the young woman are, I think, exactly right.” Not everyone shared this view, and some critics accused the painter of “academic formalism, empty of blood and emotion” when the painting was first exhibited in 1886. It has aroused stronger emotions than that on two separate occasions in Omaha. In 1890 and again in 1976 it was attacked by individuals who clearly found the nudity altogether too realistic.

The Adolphe Bridge is an open arch bridge in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. The bridge spans over the Vallée de la Pétrusse, connecting the Boulevard Royal in Ville Haute to Avenue de la Liberté in Gare. At 17.2 m wide, it carries four lanes of road traffic and two bus lanes. The bridge was built between 1900 and 1903 and open on 24 July 1903. Although it is now over 100 years old, it is also known as the New Bridge. The 'old bridge' in this comparison is the neighboring Passerelle Bridge, which was built between 1859 and 1861.

On the horizon one of the icon buildings of Luxembourg: Spuerkeess and is home to “Banque et Caisse d'Epargne de l'Etat” (State Savings Bank or BCEE), one of the bigger banks in Luxembourg.

Having already made a fortune in the cycle industry Gustave-Adolphe Clement launched the Clement-Gladiator-Humber company in 1896 with a float capitol of 22 million French francs. The Humber connection was soon severed, but in 1898 the company began manufacture of Clement and Gladiator cars, at a new facility in Levallois-Perret, Seine. From 1898 he was also a director of Panhard Levassor, when the Panhard factory could not meet the production of around 500 units in 1898 he undertook manufacture under the make name of Clement-Panhard

Clements were even produced under licence in the UK in Scotland by Stirling of Hamilton

Early cars were light cars powered by, Astor, Panhard engines

In October 1903 Clement left the company which was taken over by Harvey DuCross (Dunlop tyres), and as terms of the agreement barred from making cars under his own name. He therefore changed his name to Clement-Bayard after a Chevalier who's statue stood outside his factory at Mezieres. Initially the Clement-Bayard was similar to the Gladiator, until a more up to date range was launched in 1907.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau

"A young shepherdess stands challenging the viewer, staff in hand. Bouguereau used a play on words when naming this painting, for the shepherdess is not only standing up, but also standing her ground, made evident by her bold and confident look. When the title is read in its original French form, it reads Jeune Bergere Debout. The use of 'debout' adds an additional play on words to the meaning, as it is very similar to the word 'debut', meaning a first prominent public appearance. In the late 1800's the word was commonly associated with the debut of a debutant. Bouguereau is saying that the shepherdess is just as good as any debutant, and is once again elevating the lower class to that of the aristocracy."
