Students, potential students and community members showed up for some fun in the sun, and to learn about the admissions process at College of DuPage during the B-96 event held recently.

Prospective students and their families visited the campus on Tuesday, July 18, to explore the opportunities available at Penn State. This free program offered attendees a wide range of information including the admission process, financial aid, and student life. A campus tour, led by admissions staff Lion Ambassadors, gave visitors a chance to see the campus and see the new Joe and Rosie Rul Student Community Center which opened in October 2016. The evening ended with a beautiful evening sky.

The annual Elizabeth Public Schools Senior Seminar event was held on October 21, 2017 at John E. Dwyer Academy which was open to all 12th grade students in the district. This is an event that began 8 years ago in order to ensure that all 12th grade high school students in our district receive access to college representatives and experts in post-secondary preparation. This event is different than a college fair in the sense that presenters are given a classroom from 8am-12pm to provide students with an in depth 35-40 minute presentation on Financial Aid, Admissions Process, SAT/ACT, military enlistment, etc. A total of 28 workshops were offered, where students selected the 5 that best fit their needs/interests.

Not only did they sit on a hunger strike for the allotment of an already completed hostel, but they also raised -quoting the JNUSU Constitution -the demaAd for student representatives in the Academic Council, only to withdraw the strike without extracting any commitment on the latter demand from the Administration! We condemn this attempt to hoodwink the JNU students and demand an apology from the SFI-AISA for being more than 25 years late in raising the demand for student representatives in the AC, despite having been in the Union for years at a stretch.. We caution the students, particularly the freshers, not to be misled by the annual pre-election ritual of hunger stnkes. .

OUR DEMAND FOR THE DISPLAY OF M.PHIL INTERVIEW AND WRITTEN EXAMINATION MARKS .

The ABVP strongly feels that there is a need for larger transparency in the admission process at the M.Phii/Ph.D level. It is widely believed by a large section of the student community that due to the lack of transparency inherent in the non-declaration of written and viva marks scored by the candidates, the SFI and AISA .

The implications of the policies of disnvestment, privatization and retrenchment for the quality of, and access to, education are ominous. To begin with, the rising mess bills and transport costs cumulatively increase the cost of education. Add to this the stagnant oU11ay on education, cuts in University budgets and the bid to privatize higher education, and it becomes clear that these policies aim to remove education and employment from the grasp of all but a fortunate few. Now the government is trying to reintroduce the Private .

Universities' bill. which is meant to ruin higher education in our country. In JNU, the effect of these policies have been felt most immediately in the lack of hostel, transport and library facilities. Over 500 students are denied hostels to this date, SC/ST/OBC quotas remain unfulfilled. intake capacities and MCMs have been radically .

reduced, and all attempts to restore the policies of provisional admission involvement of the SFCs in admissions and the restoration of social deprivation index here been stonewalled. Moreover, repeated attempts have been made by the University aU1horities to make official the ritual of privatization in JNU. .

The State of the Campus The struggle for the rights snatched away from the students of JNU has always been charted by the political leadership of the .

JNUSU. In the present scenario, however, this leadership has been distinguished by its complete insensitivity to the needs of students. The fac! that the AISA JNUSU President was away for the most part of hiS tenure f~omthe campus, and that many councillors, mainly from the ABVP, fa1led to attend Council meetings, has resulted in a situation where the functioning and legitimacy of JNUSU has been undermined. This mockery of the mandate given to the JNUSU has resutted in a sharp deterioration of the democratic culture of the campus, exposing it to the communal casteist and patriarchal ji~goismof the ABVP. Instances of sexual harassment and physical Vlol.ence abound, democratic insHtutions have been perverted, not1ons of a shared community have been abandoned, with the co~~equen~e. that .a larg~ .section of students have come to equate poht1cal act1v1ty With polrt1cking. The Tasks Ahead .

Towards A Progressive Admission Policy .

The SFI perceives the struggle for the restoration of the progressive aspects of the OAP as constituting the central agenda of the left student movement on the campus today. JNU had pioneered the historic struggle against education as reproduction of social inequality and had provided an inspiring example of blending .

academic excellence with social justice through the weapon of the Old Admission Policy. The OAP's relevance increases manifold in today's contex1 where charges of victimisation during the process .

The OAP ens12red not only a 20 point deprivation programme to redress social injustices but also ensure students' involvement at every stage of the admission process to guarantee optimum transparency. Statistics released by the administration for the academic years 1995-96, show that OBC representation stands at 9.8%, SC/ST at 17.8% and the representation of back ward regions at 11 . 7% (far below the consHtutional requirements}. The proportion of rural students admitted is only half of that of urban students. Such figures show how meager our gains have actually been and how far we need to go. SFI is committed to a mission of struggle for the purpose. .

Sexual Harassment: Towards its Remedies .

The progressive consciousness fostered by a left and democratic political assertion on the campus has permitted healthy gender relations and the full participation of women in the various .

Unfortunately, JNU has increasingly become vulnerale to the most ugly manifestations of representative character of the proctoral inquiry and to inject it with a gender sensitive perspective cannot happen by bypassing the students union. Representatives of the student, teacher and Karmachari community must find adequate place in any Enquiry Committee. While the SFI calls for stringent measures to rehaul the campus security system, it also reaffirms the need to forge close links with women's organisations to draw on the strength of their rich legacy of struggle against the multiple forms of patriarchal .

irresponsibility of the administration, the arbitrariness of the private .

bus owners and above all the systematic destruction of the DTC by .

university students, especially the day scholars. Af1er sustained .

pressure and a militant demonstration led by the JNUSU, a few .

buses in 603 and 608 routes have started plying. The new JNU bus .

is also on the road. It was the Transport Convenor from SFI who .

took the ini1iative to launch a struggle for better transport facilities. .

615, 603, 666 and 507 routes and more U-specials. Student bus .

passes should be allowed in all these buses. .

The ABVP remains the principal enemy of any form of democratic, secular and progressive student assertion on the campus. Their attempt to negate the pluralistic, composite cultural others of the n·ation and to recruit ~s history by imposing their fascistic .

students' demands which are persisting for quite sometime now. Firstly, there is the Issue of the financial assistance for needy.

modern upgraded library and better computer and internet facilities. The JNUSU President is yet to respond on any of these issues..

Apart from these long term demands of the student community, there are certain immediate problems facing the students-the most.

immediate of these being the problem of the students of Arts and Aesthetics which have not notified their MPhii/PhD programme inspite of the fact that the final year MA students are passing out this year and JNU Admission process has been notified. The JNUSU.

President has taken no initiative to address the problems of the students of SAA where the Councilor from SFI along with the studentsof the School has called for a protest demonstration tomorrow demanding MPhii/PhD Programme in the School. We appeal to thestudent community to participate in large numbers ln the Demonstration to stand in solidarity with the agitating students of SAA andpressurize the Administration to concede to their demands. The demand of temporary accommodation to married research studentsand construction of another wing of Mahanadi hostel should also be addressed immediately. While we are going for a UGBM on the.

The HRD Ministry is planning to reintroduce the Private Universities Bill as the Self Financing Universities Bill in the winter session of Partiament (the Indian Express, Nov.1), which is in total defiance to the strong opposition to the bill from the organised student movement. This bid to pursue privatisation of higher education goes hand in hand with the determined bid by the RSS to 'Hinduise' it too. The RSS-run Vidya Bharati is now after English text books of the CBSE and want the poem 'The Highway .

The incident of a YFE activist getting ''bloody treatment" from AISA's commu-goonda on 03-08-2007 in JNU' campus doesn't come to us as a surprise. The vulture like 'culture' of manuwadi organizations like AISA,YFE .

(and others like SFI, 0/SSU-PISSU, NSUI, ABVP etc) is hardly any secret to the student community of JNU. Yet, the way these organizations have been indulging in shoddy behaviour with the JNU freshers on the pretext of providing them admission 'assistance' speaks volumes about their dubious & criminal 'character'. The said incident occurred in front of Admn. block when a commu-goonda named Rajan Pandey (of AISA) reportedly threw a stone .

on the face of manuputra Sumeet Kishore (of YFE}, severely inflicting injuries on him. The JNU administration has ·justly expelled him from the campus. .

This incident, on one hand, further reinforces the commonly accepted view amongst the students that the /ef-shit brigade is, by nature, criminal minded. Furthermore, the way their hollow politics has been exposed in JNU recently, they are fast losing ground and getting more & more frustrated. That's the reason they are now·indulging .

The annual Elizabeth Public Schools Senior Seminar event was held on October 21, 2017 at John E. Dwyer Academy which was open to all 12th grade students in the district. This is an event that began 8 years ago in order to ensure that all 12th grade high school students in our district receive access to college representatives and experts in post-secondary preparation. This event is different than a college fair in the sense that presenters are given a classroom from 8am-12pm to provide students with an in depth 35-40 minute presentation on Financial Aid, Admissions Process, SAT/ACT, military enlistment, etc. A total of 28 workshops were offered, where students selected the 5 that best fit their needs/interests.

Grand Rapids Community College hosted an enrollment open house to help incoming students complete the admissions process.
