The Conservatory of Flowers Special Exhibits sign identified this pretty red and white flower as a Desert Rose - Adenium Obesum. We saw this during a visit to the Wild Bunch special exhibit of Succulents - Cacti and Fat Plants, running May 6 through Oct 16, 2016 at the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. According to Wikipedia, the Adenium Obesum is also known as Sabi Star, Kudu, Mock Azelea, Impala Lily, as well as Desert-rose. In any event this pretty flower presented a wonderful photo opportunity during my recent visit to the COF with my bride Melody and our good friend Anita. Shot with my Canon EOS 80D.

3 Month old seedlings, courtesy of Dan in Nebraska.

I had this plant years ago unfortunately it didn't survive the winter (too much watered i fear). But i think macro shots with my little Conon Ixus 400 weren't not bad.

Adenium obesum is a species of flowering plant in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae, that is native to the Sahel regions, south of the Sahara, and tropical and subtropical eastern and southern Africa and Arabia. Common names include Sabi star, kudu, mock azalea, impala lily and desert rose.

The Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) is native from eastern Africa to southern Arabia. It is a perennial succulent that can grow to five feet tall. Older plants have large caudexes. It prefers warmer temperatures and is drought tolerant. The pale pink to deep red flowers bloom for 2-4 months or may be everblooming. It is a great houseplant and specimen for bonsai. Caution should be used around children and pets because this plant contains poisonous sap.

Common names include Sabi Star, Kudu, and Desert-rose.It is an evergreen or drought-deciduous succulent shrub (which can also lose its leaves during cold spells, or according to the subspecies or cultivar). It can grow to 1–3 m (3.3–9.8 ft) height, with pachycaul stems and a stout, swollen basal caudex. The leaves are spirally arranged, clustered toward the tips of the shoots, simple entire, leathery in texture, 5–15 cm (2.0–5.9 in) long and 1–8 cm (0.39–3.1 in) broad. The flowers are tubular, 2–5 cm (0.79–2.0 in) long, with the outer portion 4–6 cm (1.6–2.4 in) diameter with five petals, resembling those of other related genera such as Plumeria and Nerium. The flowers tend to red and pink, often with a whitish blush outward of the throat.

For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed.

Adenium obesum aka Desert Rose

When I came home from the DC, it was close to 10PM Sunday night, and within an hour, I hit the sheets... didn't even turn the light on in the bedroom. I slept most of the next day.

When I got up Tuesday morning, though, my eyes were treated to a wonderful surprise: My desert rose had a beautiful bloom waiting for me!! I had been so preoccupied with my efforts to get to the DC that I hadn't even noticed that the plant was forming a bud before I left for the 4-day weekend. After surviving the ordeal of getting to the DC and being rewarded with deeply touching spiritual food, covered with a beautiful sunset on the way home, this flower was the cherry on top!!

What made this flower even more beautiful was that this is the very first time an adenium has ever blossomed for me!! It sits in my southeastern window, so it doesn't get sun all day, just in the morning and early afternoon.

I took it outside right away to get some good light on it, but within minutes the South Dakota winds devastated the petals. (Doh!) Two petals were cracked and the cracks quickly oxidized and became ugly brown lines, even though still attached. I tried my best to prop up the cracked petals with leaves, but I still had to do quite a bit of post processing to get this photo to look close to normal.

Can anyone with indoor gardening experience let me know how I can get this plant to bloom repeatedly??

[Update 5/21/2008] I had FIVE simultaneous blossoms earlier this month! Unfortunately, no photos, thanks to Bryn-Bryn.
