Adenium Obesum Pink Flowers, Buds and Foliage

Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) Flower Trio

Adenium obesum is a species of flowering plant in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae, that is native to the Sahel regions, south of the Sahara, and tropical and subtropical eastern and southern Africa and Arabia. Common names include Sabi star, kudu, mock azalea, impala lily and desert rose.

Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) in bloom at White House, R T Nagar, Bengaluru.

Look closely at it's hairy filaments and ripply glowing edges.

Yes, hard to believe that this delicate pink edged flower has emerged from the fleshy succulent pictured below. You never know, do you?

Desert Rose is easy to bonsai. I have had one for 20 years and every year I cut it back to enjoy the contours of its fleshy root/stem. Every Spring it flowers profusely like an ancient Chinese cherry tree.

Desert rose has become a popular ornamental garden plant in United States Department of Agriculture zones 10 to 11. The rest of us in cooler zones will have to resort to growing Adenium indoors, giving the plant a vacation in the summer on the patio or deck. Desert Rose plant care can be difficult and requires some knowledge of the life cycle of the species.

Adeniums are succulent, tropical plants. They are distinctive among the class because they develop a caudex, or swollen trunk. All succulent plants have some sort of water storage system, be it leaves, stems or roots. In desert rose, the trunk swells to conserve moisture for times of drought. A nice fat trunk is an indicator of plant health. A skinny stem can indicate that the plant requires more moisture.

Growing Tips First, remember that Adenium plants are native to regions with poor, gritty soil and hot, sunny climates.

Common names include Sabi star, kudu, mock azalea, impala lily and desert rose.

It is an evergreen or drought-deciduous succulent shrub (which can lose its leaves during cold spells). It can grow to 1–3 m (3.3–9.8 ft) in height, with pachycaul stems and a stout, swollen basal caudex. The leaves are spirally arranged, clustered toward the tips of the shoots, simple entire, leathery in texture, 5–15 cm (2.0–5.9 in) long and 1–8 cm (0.39–3.15 in) broad. The flowers are tubular with five petals, Plumeria and Nerium. The flowers are frequently red or pink, often with a whitish blush on the outer side of the throat.

The Desert Rose, (Adenium obesum), is a strong plant that prefers hot temperatures and dry soil. They do especially well in pots and containers indoors since conditions can be more closely monitored, making them good houseplants. There are many ways to plant desert roses, including starting from seed. You must work with the seeds indoors, though, since they are delicate and blow away with even the slightest breezes. From my balcony garden, this crimson bloom of the Desert Rose emerges with striking clarity. Through careful focus, the background fades into darkness, highlighting each velvety petal as if the flower were glowing in its own spotlight. A vivid reminder of resilience and beauty within a small urban garden space.

My houseplant Desert rose is blooming

Adenium obesum or Fat Boy or Desert Rose struggles a bit in my garden but each year produces an abundance of silky plumed seeds.

Desert Rose is believed to bring wealth to the owner as highlighted in its Chinese name 富贵花 (fuguihua or wealth plant). The swollen basal stem and roots represent fertility and abundance. It is believed that the larger the swollen base, the greater the wealth and abundance. Desert Rose has several cultivars with different coloured flowers. Among the cultivars, those with red and pink flowers are favoured because brightly coloured flowers represent luck and prosperity.
