McCORMICK'S SUMMER HOTEL ON THE SWIFTWATER

Date: Circa 1908

Source Type: Photograph Booklet

Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Augusta Anderson, Inland Printing Company

Postmark: Not Applicable

Remark: Libraries holding copies of The Shadowy St. Joe indicate that this souvenir book was published circa 1910. After researching the life of Augusta Anderson, however, it is much more likely that the book was published in 1908 or perhaps 1907. In addition, it is very likely that Augusta Anderson was neither the author of the book nor the photographer of the images contained within the book.

Augusta Anderson was born circa 1885. On February 13, 1908, in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington, Augusta married Fred D. Straffin. Straffin was a fairly well-known photographer who operated from a Spokane photography studio. Straffin published a souvenir book of the Potlatch lumber mill located in Potlatch, Latah County, Idaho, in 1907 that is very similar in design to The Shadowy St. Joe. Straffin also published a souvenir book of St. Maries, Benewah County, Idaho, which is located along the St. Joe River, that is also of nearly the same design as The Shadowy St. Joe.

Straffin was somewhat under duress when he married Augusta Anderson. According to a news item published in the Spokane Daily Chronicle on February 8, 1908, Straffin had been “charged with the seduction of Augusta Anderson, 23 years of age…. Straffin claimed that the girl yielded readily to his request that she live with him, and denied that, except in a joking way, that he had ever promised to marry her. The girl denies these statements emphatically, alleging that she took the matter seriously. She broke down several times in court.”

It is learned from a June 18, 1908, news item also published in the Spokane Daily Chronicle that Straffin and Anderson had married on February 13, 1908, so that Straffin could avoid jail and have the seduction case dismissed in superior court. This same news item mentions that Augusta was now seeking a divorce after four months of marriage because Fred had “been drunk much of the time since their marriage and has not contributed to her support.” It also notes that before the marriage that Augusta had been a waitress and specifically states that “The groom was a photographer. He offered to teach the girl the art of the offer was accepted. Before the girl had mastered her trade, however, Straffin was arrested for intimate relations with her, and was bound over to the superior court to answer to the charge.”

The 1908 divorce case apparently was dismissed since there appears in the October 11, 1910, issue of The Press, published in Spokane, a notice of a pending divorce suit between Augusta and Fred D. Straffin. The Spokane Daily Chronicle’s January 19, 1911, issue reports that the divorce was granted and states that “She [August Straffin] charged that she was deserted on the day of her wedding, which occurred in Spokane in 1908, and that her husband had never contributed to her support. She was permitted to resume her maiden name, Augusta Anderson.”

Augusta Straffin appears in the 1908 city directory for Spokane with Fred as the proprietor of the Rembrandt Studio, while later directories do not tie Augusta to any photography business. Collectively, this information suggests that Augusta Anderson had neither taken the photographs appearing in The Shadowy St. Joe – there is no evidence that she was fully trained as a photographer – nor had she compiled the book as an author. Rather, evidence strongly suggests that Fred D. Straffin was responsible for the development and publication of The Shadowy St. Joe and perhaps had August listed as author as an inducement to initiate or maintain an intimate relationship with her. It is possible the Augusta had taken the photographs and authored the book while Fred was occupied with drinking and desertion of his wife, but this calls into question as to how Augusta was fully trained as a photographer.

Fred D. Straffin was born in 1869 and died April 23, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah; he is buried at the Salt Lake City Cemetery in an unmarked grave. His death certificate indicates that he was a widow at the time of his death, suggesting that he may have remarried after being divorced from Augusta.

Little is known concerning August Anderson after her divorce from Fred. A notice of marriage licenses granted in Spokane County published in The Spokesman-Review on February 11, 1914, mentions that an Adam Noble or Spokane was granted a license to marry Augusta Anderson, also of Spokane. It is assumed that this is likely the same Augusta Anderson that married and divorced Fred D. Straffin.

Adam was born to a multi-talented beauty queen Mother and a Father who, in addition to being a US Army Spy and a Counter-Intelligence Special Agent, was also a highly accomplished entrepreneur. Adam was taught at a young age that, in both life and business, loyalty is a requirement for success. He’s had the honor of working directly with his father in several of the family businesses. In fact, this is where he learned crucial entrepreneurial skills and honed his talents with international business strategies and venture capitalism.

Adam earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in International Business and Marketing from the University of Utah. He was hand-picked by the President of the University’s renowned School of Business to compete with dozens of other ambitious nationwide-graduates for the opportunity to secure a lucrative job within a prestigious Fortune 100 company.

Adam‘s hard work and creativity helped him land this job of a lifetime. He obtained incredible business experience there and spent years innovating, improving processes and setting sales records. Although this dream job in Traditional Corporate America was a fun challenge for him, and something he truly enjoyed mastering, Adam’s natural entrepreneurial spirit kept nudging him to do something more significant with his time and talents.

Since 2001, Adam has been involved in the Health and Wellness Industry as a successful Entrepreneur, Broker, Product Developer and Manufacturer of Cosmeceutical products. During his career, he has worked with some of the most recognizable Fortune 500 businesses along with many top international Network Marketing companies. Adam has consistently proven his unique ability to help his clients achieve their goals through creative Distribution-Channel Placement, innovative Product Development and custom Manufacturing. Adam currently owns three profitable businesses.

Admittedly, Adam was not initially a fan of Network Marketing. He did not understand the business model because it was new to him. However, once he learned that the REAL focus of Direct Sales is to help average people get a taste of entrepreneurialism --- with minimal risk and at a low cost --- Adam was absolutely convinced of the potential with Multi-Level Marketing.

Since joining the company as one of the original 11 founding distributors, Adam has discovered that many of his life-goals truly do align perfectly with Network Marketing. Adam enjoys helping others find significance. Adam is most grateful for the complete time-freedom he has with his fantastic wife and five children. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Adam Paul Green, MXI Corp Ambassador and Multi-Millionaire Earner.

Nandi (Sanskrit: नन्दी, Tamil: நந்தி, Telugu: న౦ది) is the name for the bull which serves as the mount (Sanskrit: Vahana) of the god Shiva and as the gatekeeper of Shiva and Parvati. In Hindu Religion, he is the chief guru of eighteen masters (18 siddhas) including Patanjali and Thirumular. Temples venerating Shiva display stone images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine. There are also a number of temples dedicated solely to Nandi.

The application of the name Nandi to the bull (Sanskrit: vṛṣabha) is in fact a development of recent centuries, as Gouriswar Bhattacharya has documented in an illustrated article entitled "Nandin and Vṛṣabha". The name Nandi was earlier widely used instead for an anthropomorphic deity who was one of Shiva’s two door-keepers, the other being Mahākāla. The doorways of pre-tenth-century North Indian temples are frequently flanked by images of Mahākāla and Nandi, and it is in this role of Shiva’s watchman that Nandi figures in Kālidāsa’s poem the Kumārasambhava.

ETYMOLOGY

The word “Nandi” is believed to be derived from the ancient word “Pandi” meaning bull or its has origins in the Sanskrit language where it means 'of Shiva', 'attendant of Shiva', or happy.

BIRTH OF NANDI

There was a Sage named Shilada who underwent severe penance to have a boon - A child with immortality. Lord Indra pleased of the austerities of Shilada appeared in front of him to offer a boon. After hearing the request of Shilada and his desire to have an immortal child, Lord Indra suggested him to pray to Lord Shiva who could provide the boon; nobody else could provide such a boon. Sage Shilada continued his penance for thousand years. He was totally immovable for many years, so the termites settled on his body and slowly started to build up their nest. Finally, his whole body was covered up by them. The insects started to eat his flesh and imbibed his blood. At last, only bones remained. Lord Shiva appeared in front of him and provided the boon for an immortal child. Moreover, Lord Shiva provided Sage Shilada his old form with a single touch. Sage Shilada performed Yagna and a child appeared from the sacrificial fire. His body was clad in armour made out of diamonds. The celestial dancers and singers performed on this auspicious occasion and the deities showered flowers on the child. The boy was named ’Nandi’ - who brings joy. Shilada brought the child home, immediately the boy lost his divine appearance to an ordinary child. The child completely forgot all about his birth. Sage Shilada was worried about the sudden change. He devoted his time for the bringing up the child, his education etc. By the age of seven the boy was well versed in Veda and all sacred texts. One day the two deities - Mitra and Varuna visited Sage Shilada. At the first sight of the boy, they commented: Though the boy had all auspicious signs, he would have a very short life. The boy would not live after the age of eight. Sage Shilada was mortified at this remark. Nandi could not bear his father's sorrow, he began to pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before him and blessed him. Lord Shiva adorned the boy with a necklace around his neck which he was wearing, and made him immortal. Lord Shiva blessed the child and declared that he would be worshiped along with Him and become his vahana(vehicle). Immediately the boy got all the divine powers and transformed into half bull-half human. Then he and Shilada went to Lord Shiva 's abode to live.

IN HINDUISM

Bulls appear on the Indus Valley seals, including the 'Pasupati Seal', which depicts a seated figure, and according to some scholars is similar to Shiva. However, most scholars agree that the horned bull on the Indus Valley seals is not identical to Nandi.

The various descriptions on Nandi in the Hindu Religion texts include:

Some Puranas describe Nandi or Nandikeshvara as bull faced with a human body that resembles that of Shiva- in proportion and aspect, although with four hands, two hands holding the Parasu (the axe) and Mruga (the antelope) and the other two hands joined together in the Anjali(obeisance). Brahma Vaivarta Purana mentions Krishna himself to have taken the form of a bull as no one else in the Universe can bear Shiva.

Vehicle of Shiva: The bull Nandi is Shiva's primary vehicle and is the principal gana (follower) of Shiva.

Gate keeper of Shiva's abode: The close association of Shiva and Nandi explains the presence of a statue of Nandi at the gate of many temples dedicated to Shiva. It also explains why the word "nandi" in the Kannada, Telugu and Tamil languages is used as a metaphor for a person blocking the way. In Sanskrit, a bull is called "vrisha", which has another connotation - that of righteousness or Dharma. It is important to seek the blessings of Nandi before proceeding to worship Lord Shiva.

Chief in Shiva's army: Some Puranas mention that Nandi lead the Shiva Ganas, Shiva's attendants.

A Guru of Saivism: In addition to being his mount, Nandi is Shiva's foremost disciple. In the Natha/Siddhar tradition, Nandi is one of the primal gurus. He was the guru to Siddhar Thirumulanathar, Patanjalinathar and others.

From the yogic perspective, Nandi/Nandhi/ Nandikeshvara is the mind dedicated to Lord Siva, the Absolute. In other words, to understand and absorb Light, the 'experience and the wisdom' is Nandi which is the Guru within.

Spiritually, Nandi represents an individual jiva (soul) and the message that the jiva should always be focussed on the Atman (Paramatman).

LEGENDS

According to some puranas, Nandi was born to sage Shilada who got him by the grace of Shiva.

It was Nandi who cursed Ravana (the demon King of Lanka) that his kingdom would be burnt by a monkey (Vanara). And later Hanuman burnt Lanka when he went in search of Sita, who was kept prisoner by Ravana in Ashok Vatika. In one puranic story, it is stated that once Siva and Parvathi were playing a game of dice. For any game there has to be an umpire, who has to declare who is the winner. Siva and Parvathi agreed to have Nandi (the divine bull) as the umpire. Nandi is a favorite of Siva, as he is Siva's vehicle. Although Siva lost the game, Nandi declared him the winner. It is stated that Parvathi was indignant over Nandi's partiality for Siva and cursed him that he should die from an incurable disease. Thereupon Nandi fell at the feet of Parvathi and pleaded for forgiveness. "Mother forgive me. Should I not show at least this amount of gratitude to one who is my master? Is it not humiliating for me to declare that my master has lost the game? To uphold his honor I no doubt uttered a lie. But am I to be punished with such severity for so small an offence?" Nandi prayed for forgiveness in this manner. Parvathi forgave Nandi and taught him the means to atone for his lapse. She told him. "The Chaturdasi day in the month of Bhadrapada is the day when my son's birthday is celebrated. On that day you have to offer to my son what pleases you most (green grass)". This means that one atones for one's sins when one offers to the Lord what is most pleasing and enjoyable to him. For Nandi the most enjoyable and relishing food is green grass. As directed by Parvathi Nandi worshipped Ganapathi by offering green grass. Nandi was then relieved of his dreaded disease. His health improved and by the grace of Parvathi he was redeemed.

When the positive forces, the devas, and the negative forces, the asuras, joined together on a rare occasion to churn the ocean with a mountain to obtain the nectar of immortality they utilized Vasuki, the serpent, as the rope. The devas pulled from one end and the asuras from the other. Lots of precious herbs and gems were produced during the Churning and one of them was a poison (halāhala) which became human karma. This "poison" was so dangerous that none of the devas or asuras wanted to go near it. It was extremely sticky and coming into contact with this poison, i.e., human karma, would drag the divinity down to the realms of human suffering and ego. As everyone else ran away, Lord Siva, followed by Nandi, came forward to help as he was the only one who could counteract this deadly poison. Siva took the poison into his hand and drank it, the descent of the poison was in turn stopped at His throat, by His divine consort. Siva is therefore also known as Nīlakaṇṭha (the blue-throated one) and Viṣakaṇṭha (the poison-throated one). Nandi saw some of the poison spill out of Siva's mouth and immediately drank if off the ground. The devas and asuras watching were shocked and wondered aloud what would happen to Nandi. Lord Siva calmed their fears saying, "Nandi has surrendered into me so completely that he has all my powers and my protection".

The latest addition to the truro minibuses fleet is Mellor bodied Vario R998 WYE. Although been in the fleet a while not seen a pic of it. Seen here in the yard at Godolphin prepared for MOT awaiting test. Previously with Oakleys Plymouth.

MassDOT's Aeronautics Division this spring in addition to its other responsibilities is painting airport taxiway markings throughout the Commonwealth.

The Statewide Taxiway Marking Project is repainting taxiway markings at 30 public-use airports. MassDOT Secretary Richard A. Davey in May visited the Beverly Municipal Airport, where the crew was at work.

Thomas Mahoney and Kathleen Mahoney, Aeronautics Division engineers, managed to save approximately $85,000 on the taxiway program by producing the plans and specifications in-house and by using an existing Highway Division engineering support contract to provide resident engineering services.

The repainted markings include: centerlines, edgelines, holdlines, non-movement area markings, enhanced centerlines, surface painted signs, compass roses, airport names and identifiers.

Airport taxiway markings are a safety issue, helping pilots navigate to and from the runway or apron. Faded markings can make traversing the airport confusing and increase the possibility of an airfield accident. The work is approximately 50% completed and will continue in June.

Olive Bistro, the latest addition to A D Singh’s chain of Olives, is located in Gurgaon’s budding Cyber Hub. It is located on the first floor, placed strategically in front of the Cyber Hub auditorium. It just felt delightful in walking into its Outdoor seating. The picket white fences, the garden feel type of seating made way to a feeling of mushiness and warmth. I have always been a fan of alfresco dining. Be it the warmth of the sun on a wintery afternoon or a breezy sultry evening, the ambience does make a difference for me! So this place, in the heart (almost) of Gurgaon definitely bowled me over.

The staff were friendly, courteous and polite and took extreme care to reach out when needed. Well informed about the dishes and were giving ample suggestions when asked for.

We were there for the Sunday brunch and that is one lavish spread. There are multiple options for Appetizers and drinks with ample vegetarian selects. The course started off with The Olive special Caesar salad which is a must try, a mezze platter of Pita n Nachos with dips of hummus, babaghanoush, tashi and drinks. The mock tail that I had ordered “Litchi tornado” tasted artificial and nothing like Litchi, but the “Mojito” was perfect. Rest of the cocktails tasted good but the Red wine Sangria was the best of the lot for me.

The others included Potato & Jalapeno poppers (one that was immensely loved by all), batter coated pickled vegetables which gave out a hint of tanginess to the fried vegetables, crumb fried fish (being a fish lover, I really liked it), cottage cheese sliders and chicken sliders. The Cottage cheese and Chicken sliders came with portion of twos and the chicken burger was one of the best we have had in quite a while, crunchy patty with lettuce, onion and tomato. We also ordered for the Eggs Benedict with spinach – and this one took the prize, subtle with sautéed spinach, tasty and exactly the way Eggs Benedict should be made.

Done with the starters we decided on to try out on few of the items on the mains menu. Ordered for “Grilled Lemon Mustard Basa”, “Herbs roast chicken”, “BBQ pork Spare ribs” and “Garlic & Dill marinated Grilled prawns” along with one helping (read big) of Penne in white sauce with grilled chicken. The one word to describe each dish should be “amazing”. Every dish was cooked to perfection and just as beautifully served, with accompaniments of Mashed Potato and buttered vegetables, mushy peas, pesto and sundried tomatoes. The contrasting flavours were an absolute delight.

Dessert platter consisted of Flourless Chocolate torte, Lemon Tart, Blueberry Cheesecake, Banana moist cake and Waffles with Maple syrup. Waffles were fresh, warm and crispy as needed and tasted yummy with maple syrup. The lemon tart was bursting with a bitter, sweet, tangy flavor all at one go when taken a bite into.

It was a very nice experience, well who wouldn’t love good food with an amazing ambience. Will be definitely, making a visit here again. All in all the place is a must go!

A few additions from earlier sets

BRIEF:

The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless

SOLUTION:

The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.

The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.

The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.

A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.

A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.

After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.

TESTIMONIAL:

"After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.

We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.

Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.

We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".

Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.

The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.

The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.

Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.

Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!

There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.

Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

About MXI Corp: Established in 2005, Marketing Xocolate International Corporation (MXI-Corp) is the world leader in great tasting, healthy, dark, chocolate products. All MXI products are focused on potent doses of delicious, antioxidant-rich Belgian cacao. MXI is recognized as the category creator and world leader in healthy chocolate. The vision of Xoçai is to transform and improve individual lives worldwide through its unique chocolate products. I've been doing well on my self-imposed toy/plushie diet, and haven't bought almost anything for the last three months! :0 That's a huge step for me, LOL! But here are a couple of recent purchases... ;)

ah, Pinypon! I've seen photos of these cuties for several years on Flickr, and was thrilled when I heard they'd been spotted at Target! There were lots of different styles, but I only bought 2. ;)

I hope to continue with my "toy diet"--I find it is getting easier to resist those impulse buys! The only thing that's not off-limits are Lalaloopsies (but even those I haven't bought in several months!)

*By 1918, due to the increase in Kimba’s population, the need for a public hall became a priority.

A timber framed, corrugated iron building with pitched roof was purchased for £100 from Cowell. This building was dismantled and transported to Kimba by settlers using horse-teams.

The hall was used as the School, Town Hall, and Picture Theatre with films shown every month. It was used for Dances and Balls, Church, as a Polling Booth and for travelling salesmen to display and sell their wares.

*A foundation stone was laid in 1929, in memory of those who served in the Great War 1914–1918 and the new Institute was officially opened in the same year.

*In 1958 a new front was added with a Library and Council Office. [Ref: Story Board]

*A plaque to the memory of those from the Kimba District who made the supreme sacrifice in World War One 1914–1918 and World War Two 1939–1945 was unveiled on the day the additions were officially opened by Sir Lyell McEwin on 23 February 1958.

*Kimba Memorial Institute

The first step in the most progressive move that has taken place in Kimba, occurred on Saturday, when the foundation stone of the new Soldiers Memorial Institute was laid by Miss Mary Haskett, daughter of Mr and Mrs I S Haskett, and the first white child born in the district.

One of the largest crowds seen in Kimba assembled to witness this important ceremony.

Mr F R Ferry, President of the Kimba Institute, and the Building Committee, presided, and seated on the platform with him were Mesdames O M Eatts, G J Chenoweth, Reiss (wife of contractor), and Messrs J Tippett, Andrew Ramsey, O E Carlaw, F J Newman, Reiss (contractor) and F I Kestel (architect).

Mr Ferry gave a very interesting resume of details leading up to the occasion, and then presented Miss Haskett with a silver trowel, suitably inscribed, and asked her to perform the ceremony of laying the stone.

Miss Haskett, in a neat little speech declared the stone well and truly laid.

Mr Andrew Ramsey, in moving a vote of thanks to Miss Haskett, said that we all admitted and admired the bravery of such pioneer families as the Hasketts.

The chairman then appealed for donations for the hall to be placed on the stone, and Mrs O M Eatts, on behalf of the Kimba Ladies' Social Club, led the way with their cheque for £1,116 10/0, followed by others of smaller denomination.

After the ceremony, a football match was held on the recreation ground between the Kelly and Kimba teams, resulting in a win for Kelly, who have not been defeated for the season.

A cycle race for boys was run during the intervals of the football match, and resulted in a win for J Brewster. Mr Chenoweth also conducted a putting and mashie competition for golf enthusiasts, the whole proceeds going towards the institute funds. [Ref: Eyre’s Peninsula Tribune 11-7-1929]

*Kimba Institute - Official Opening

Kimba will be en fete on Saturday December 7th, when the long-looked for event of the opening of the large new hall will take place.

For many years the public have suffered the inconvenience of a cramped wood and iron structure which could not nearly cope with the crowd at public functions. As a form of Soldiers’ Memorial it was decided to build an institute large enough to satisfy the requirements of a rapidly growing district, and despite the lean years that the district has recently experienced, a very handsome structure is the result. In conjunction with the opening of the hall on December 7th, the local branch of the RSA will hold their annual sports on the show grounds, the total proceeds of the day will go towards the hall funds. The hall will be opened by Lieutenant-Colonel W F J McCann DSO, MC, at 10am.

Special arrangements are being made to provide a sparkling entertainment for the evening which will be followed by a dance. [Ref: Eyre’s Peninsula Tribune 28-11-1929]

Auto repair shop office occupies the left side of the rear addition to this old home, and the voluminous garage itself is attached to the back of that addition. A uniquely sprawling and massive commercial addition!

We have been struck by bunny love...the newest addition to the family is Sundae the rabbit.

A kid at the school was looking to get rid of to baby bunnies that she had bought at a livestock auction. I wish I had taken on both as the other one met an untimely death due to neglect and ignorance of the girl and her family.

Sundae is doing really well though and we are all smitten.

She is adorable! Loves snuggles and will happily fall asleep on us. She is well on her way to being house trained and enjoys following us about the house.

We built her a three storey rabbit condo for when we cannot keep an eye on her.

Aww look at that little face :)

nrhp # 72001077- Also known as First Commercial Oil Well in Oklahoma- April 1897 marked the beginning of Oklahoma's petroleum industry when the first commercial oil well was drilled in Indian Territory (I.T.). George B. Keeler, who had come to I.T. in 1871 to work at Chouteau's trading post near the Osage Indian Agency, noticed oil seeping from the ground on the south bank of the Caney River near Bartlesville in 1875. After Keeler and William Johnstone opened a trading post on the south bank, they decided to have a well drilled to boost economic conditions in the area. They and another early settler, Frank Overlees, obtained a lease from the Cherokee Nation and hired the Cudahy Oil Company to drill the well.

On April 15, 1897, spectators watched Keeler's stepdaughter, Jennie Cass, drop a go-devil (torpedo) down the shaft to set off a nitroglycerin charge. Drilled to 1,320 feet and named for Johnstone's daughter, the well was capped until 1899 when the Kansas, Oklahoma Central and Southwestern Railway (later the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway) was built and provided transportation to ship the oil to outside markets. The well produced over 100,000 barrels of crude oil before it was plugged in 1948. The success of the Nellie Johnstone stimulated exploration and drilling on the nearby Osage lands. In addition, brothers Frank and L. E. (Lee Eldas) Phillips, attracted by the oil boom, moved from Iowa to Bartlesville in 1904 and established Phillips Petroleum Company.

Nellie Johnstone Cannon, a descendant of Delaware Chief Charles Journeycake, was allotted the land on which the well was dug. In 1917 she sold the land to the city of Bartlesville, and a redwood replica of the derrick was built in Johnstone Park.

Less formal than the dining room, this dining area just off the kitchen and family room, offers plenty of light to entertain informally or have space to spread out the latest projects or Sunday paper.

Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture’s design for the Powerhouse Science Center re-envisions a historic riverfront structure as a hub for science education, exploration and promotion in the City of Sacramento. On the banks of the Sacramento River, the Science Center grows out from an abandoned power station building. As a principal component of the Riverfront activation, the Powerhouse Science Center anchors Robert T. Matsui Waterfront Park and borders the southern terminus of the 32-mile American River Bike Trail.

Vacant for over half a century, the structure undergoes a complete historic rehabilitation and the construction of a new floor level inside. A new two-story addition projects from the east side, containing a lobby, classrooms, offices and a cafe. A 110-seat planetarium is prominently on display with a zinc-clad hemispheric dome rising above the building’s mass. As representation of our place in the universe, the facade and building mass is sectioned by multiple planes, creating continuous vector lines that extend across the building and site. From satellites to world landmarks, the lines form connections with local and global points of interest.

The original PG&E Power Station B was designed in 1912 in the Beaux Arts Style by architect Willis Polk and was formally closed in 1954. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, California Register of Historic Places and the Sacramento Register of Historic & Cultural Resources. The Powerhouse Science Center is designed to achieve a USGBC LEED Rating of Silver.

Forza d'Agrò is an Italian town and comune in Sicily, part of the Province of Messina.Forza d'Agrò is on the lower peak of a small mountain, while on the higher peak that overlooks the town are the remains of a Norman castle. Much of the town consists of traditional buildings and stone paved lanes that are impassable by car. Due to this lack of recent development, Forza d'Agrò has featured as the backdrop in a number of films, such as The Godfather trilogy. The original name of the village was Vicum Agrillae, changed into current in the XIV century after having fortified the centre. The word Forza in fact derives from Latin Fortia, and means "fort", while the addition D'agrò derives from Greek Agròs, and means "field". The Holy Trinity Church, also known as St. Augustine's, is accessible by a scenic staircase. The interior, with a nave, is characterized by the sharp color contrast procured by the four altars, wooden structures painted ultramarine blue with pale gold ornaments, with white walls and without any decoration.Forza D’Agrò is immersed in green and peace and its lands are dominated by the castle testifing the medieval history of the place. Do not miss the beautiful view of the castle and its gatehouse from the fortified walls, the fifteenth-Cathedral of SS. Annunziata, the church of the Triad with its spectacular Durazzesco Arch and the Convent of the Augustinians. The local cuisine summarizes in a harmonious and original fusion, the best the earth has to offer lively and generous. Every dish, from the simplest to the most elaborate, shows creativity, imagination, into a festival of colors and flavors to be enjoyed and savored.
