First day of Carnival 2010 in Jujuy Capital (Argentina).

This was a great Carnival party in the old (disused) train station in San Salvador de Jujuy. Music, cheap red wine (often mixed with CocaCola) and a great crowd having a lot of fun.

During Carnival festivities in the Andes mountains, a local tradition consists in throwing white talk powder, spray foam and confettis to the face of others while drinking and dancing to the music of marching bands.

I took this photo at a cattle market I stumbled upon on the road in West Bengal (India).

All the local farmers were there to buy and sell livestock (often young animals).

There were many goats for sale on this market. I believe that most of the men present were Muslims, and goats are used for meat ("mutton") by Muslim people.

The Man burns (again)

The first Man was burned 4 days earlier by arson

Found this interesting news clip:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Black Rock City (AP) - After the early torching of the Burning Man festival signature figure by an arsonist, the Burning Man Organization decided that all future copies of the "Man" would be made in China and shipped to Nevada.

"We already purchase all our fireworks from China", said Larry Harvey, one of the co-founders of the Burning Man festival. "So it made sense to outsource the Man too."

"Chinese-built copies of the 40-foot tall Man will cost us about 10 times less than domestic copies, and this will save us a lot of green stuff", Harvey explained, referring to this year’s "Green Man" theme.

"The Chinese Man will be 100% identical to the domestic version, very combustible and based on the same original blueprints from my good friend John Law. We don't expect any lead poisoning problems", Harvey added.

There has been rumors that the significant cost saving will permit the festival organization to burn a copy of the Man every night of the week, which some see as environmentally questionable as well as a disguised way to prevent any future early torching of the figure.

The first batch of Chinese-made Man is expected to ship early august 2008, and there are currently no plans to make Chinese copies available to the general public, although this is being discussed in the organization.

Daryl's amazing railroad tattoo (San Francisco)

Train tracks, switches and tunnels cover his entire body, front and back, from head to toes (litterally), in a perfectly symetrical and seamless pattern. He designed the tattoo and said it took 200 hours of work to realise the work.

Daryl spent many years of his life "freight train hopping", which involves countless days of walking long miles along desert tracks.

Road bridge over the Ganga river floodplain.

The sandy floodplain is used for agriculture during the dry season. Small plantations (I don't know of what) are protected by fences made of some sort of dry grass or weed manually planted in the sand, that prevent flying sand from burying the small planted areas.

If you know the name of this type of agriculture or know what is being grown there, please post a comment!

During the rainy season (monsoon), the entire floodplain is flooded by the Ganges river.

Open Defecation Free Myagdi District sign (Nepal)

This rather funny sign means that it is forbidden to poop in the open.

They put this sign because this is the Annapurnas trekking Route, frequented by many tourists, and presumably they think tourists do not like when local Nepali people relieve themselves in nature. They also built basic toilets every couple of Km along the road, but those are already in disrepair and have no water.

There is of course no Nepali Poop Police (in fact, barely any Police at all!), and this regulation is not enforced. I had diarrhea when i was there, and I had no problem pooping in the open :)

Khasi woman preparing her Betel nuts (India)

The woman is removing the husk of an Areca nut.

The Areca nut is then wrapped with Betel leaf and chewed for its exhilarating lift. Betel chewing has been claimed to produce a sense of well-being, euphoria, heightened alertness, sweating, salivation, a hot sensation in the body and increased capacity to work.

Just like alcohol, tobacco, coffee and sakau, Areca nut and Betel leaf are culturally-approved psychoactive drugs.

The Areca nut, by association, is sometimes inaccurately called the "Betel nut" or "Betel Quids".

See the Areca nut Wikipedia article.

Human skeletal remains (leg bones) in the Ganges flood plain near Allahabad (India).

The flood plain of the Ganges river is like a sandy desert during the dry season, but it is completely flooded during the monsoon (rainy season).

It is common to stumble upon human skeletons on the Ganges flood plain, as the Ganges is a Holy river for Hindu people. Hindu are normally cremated, but some categories of people are "buried" directly in the river. This includes pregnant women, young children, Sadhus / Hindu holy men, and people victims of contagious diseases or bitten by a Cobra snake.

Their remains end up scattered over the sandy flood plain during the dry season, when it becomes a desert, and disturbed or dug-up by wild animals or stray dogs.

Wooden memorial stick with Native American offerings on the site of Captain Jack's Stronghold, in the Lava Beds National Monument (California).

What made this Indian bull especially Holy is the strange long wattle protrusion at the back of his hump. This calf has an extra leg attached to the top of her neck. This is a birth defect called Polymelia, where conjoint twins starts developing but one twin degenerated completely except for one or more limbs, which end up attached to the other twin.

With cows, the one or two extra limbs are often attached to the top of the cow's neck. This extra legs are shrunken, deformed and non-functional, and they get strange long nails (since the nails on normal cow legs get worn by walking).

In India, when a calf is born with extra leg or two, this is like winning the jackpot: those 5 legged and 6 legged cows are seen are very holy, and the owner will parade them around and receive donations from Hindu devotees.

These two calves (one with 5 legs, and the other one with 6 legs) were transported around the city in a specially designed motor rickshaw, covered with images of the famous "Sai Baba" (not sure why).

Doosan Excavator ripping up old asphalt on a road in West Bengal (India)

This paved road was poorly constructed with a very thin layer of poor quality asphalt (a lot of gravel with little bitumen). With all the heavy truck traffic, huge potholes formed everywhere. Hopefully they will build a better road.

Caravan of pack mules on the Yamunotri trail (India)

Yamunotri can only be reached by a 8 Km foot trail, so all the supply are hauled up using caravans of pack mules.

Here, the caravan returns (with no load) to the nearby village of Janki Chatti.

For more photos and info about Yamunotri, go to the Yamunotri photo album.

Large block of ice in the Jot Dean ice cave (California).

It looks like in the past, the entire cave was filled with ice, and now, due to climate change, most of the ice has melted, but there is still a pretty large chunk on the side.

For more info about ice caves, read en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cave.

Adit tunnel, part of an unfinished Hydropower project in Sikkim (India)

I was able to explore the tunnel up to a point where it was flooded (the water pumps were not functionning, but there was some electric lights). The tunnel is obviously unfinished. Not sure what this tunnel is for. I think it maybe to drive heavy equipment to the site, like turbines for the power house, since the small mountain roads cannot be used by heavy trucks.

This is part of a semi-abandoned unfinished Hydro-Power Project on the Teesta river in Sikkim (India). The project is developed by Lanco Infratech Limited.
