I took this photo at a cattle market I stumbled upon on the road in West Bengal (India).

All the local farmers were there to buy and sell livestock (often young animals).

There were many goats for sale on this market. I believe that most of the men present were Muslims, and goats are used for meat ("mutton") by Muslim people.

Daryl's amazing railroad tattoo (San Francisco)

Train tracks, switches and tunnels cover his entire body, front and back, from head to toes (litterally), in a perfectly symetrical and seamless pattern. He designed the tattoo and said it took 200 hours of work to realise the work.

Daryl spent many years of his life "freight train hopping", which involves countless days of walking long miles along desert tracks.

First day of Carnival 2010 in Jujuy Capital (Argentina).

This was a great Carnival party in the old (disused) train station in San Salvador de Jujuy. Music, cheap red wine (often mixed with CocaCola) and a great crowd having a lot of fun.

During Carnival festivities in the Andes mountains, a local tradition consists in throwing white talk powder, spray foam and confettis to the face of others while drinking and dancing to the music of marching bands.

Shoemaker fixing a shoe (Mèo Vac, Vietnam)

If you you know the name of this type of chinese-made sewing machine, please email me.

The shoe he is fixing was so old and used that I could not believe it was worth fixing. But for the tribe people, fixing old shoes is worth it, since it costs only a couple of cents, while a new paire costs probably close to one dollar.

Wooden memorial stick with Native American offerings on the site of Captain Jack's Stronghold, in the Lava Beds National Monument (California).

This unofficial indigenous memorial commemorates an episode of the Modoc war, where a small Native American band led by Modoc chief "Captain Jack" resisted a large organized army force, before being eventually taken and killed. The natives used the natural features of the lava beds to defend their stronghold.

What made this bull especially Holy is the strange long wattle protrusion at the back of his hump. This is an excrescence of skin, similar to the wattle that goats have under their neck, but much bigger. It looks like a beaver tail, and it feels soft and warm when touching it.

Pilgrims would touch the wattle for good luck, and donate money to the owner of the Holy Bull.

This paved road was poorly constructed with a very thin layer of poor quality asphalt (a lot of gravel with little bitumen). With all the heavy truck traffic, huge potholes formed everywhere. Hopefully they will build a better road.

The springs of the Yamuna river near Yamunotri (India)

Yamuna is the largest tributary river of the Ganges.

The Yamuna river originates from a Glacier higher up in the mountain, but in winter, the water of the Yamuna flows under the snow and ice and emerges here, just near Yamunotri.

Adit tunnel, part of an unfinished Hydropower project in Sikkim (India)

I was able to explore the tunnel up to a point where it was flooded (the water pumps were not functionning, but there was some electric lights). The tunnel is obviously unfinished. Not sure what this tunnel is for. I think it maybe to drive heavy equipment to the site, like turbines for the power house, since the small mountain roads cannot be used by heavy trucks.

This is part of a semi-abandoned unfinished Hydro-Power Project on the Teesta river in Sikkim (India). The project is developed by Lanco Infratech Limited.

This is Hanuman, one of the very kitch Hindu God sculptures at the ISKCON (Hare Krishna) Ashram at Kumbh Mela 2013.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Road bridge over the Ganga river floodplain.

The sandy floodplain is used for agriculture during the dry season. Small plantations (I don't know of what) are protected by fences made of some sort of dry grass or weed manually planted in the sand, that prevent flying sand from burying the small planted areas.

During the rainy season (monsoon), the entire floodplain is flooded by the Ganges river.

This is my friend Bun Bun (Chelsea), trying to put a Royal Enfield bullet motorbike on its Center Stand, at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival, near Allahabad (India).

The motorbike was a bit too heavy for her. I ended up using this motorbike for the rest of my trip in India and Nepal.

Baba (Hindu devotee) smoking a chillum of ritual cannabis at the Shivaratri Hindu festival at the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu (Nepal).

The ritual marking on his forehead is called a Tilaka.

During the Shivaratri festival (the 'Great Night of Shiva'), thousands of Hindu devotees and pilgrims gather at the Pashupatinath Temple to pray and celebrate Lord Shiva. Smoking holy Ganja is part of the ritual.

Beef lungs hanging at a meat market in Meghalaya (India)

It may sound strange, but in some regions of India, people do eat cows.

I took this series of photos in a village in the East Khasi Hills, a region of the Meghalaya State in North-East India, inhabited by the Khasi people. Khasi people were animist but most converted to Christianity, and they do eat beef.

In this village, several meat shops were selling beef meat and they displayed the severed heads of the slaughtered cows on the ground in front of their shop. They have no fridges so the animals are slaughtered early in the morning, and all the fresh meat and organs must be sold by the end of the day.

Mercury Smelter - Furnace - New Idria

New Idria is a ghost town located in a remote area of the Coast Range of California (USA), outside the town of Hollister. It was once a center for mercury (quick silver) and asbestos mining. New Idria was at its peak well before the Gold Rush in California of the 1840's and 1860's. There are still high levels of mercury and asbestos polution in the area.

If you don't mind ignoring all the "no trespassing" signs, you can visit an amazing mercury smelter with four large "Gould" rotary furnances. This smelter was abandoned in the 1970's. All those photos were taken in May 2004.

My KLR 650 motorbike decided to take a nap!

It is hard to tell on the photo, but the trail was pretty steep and I crashed going downhill (slow).

The motorbike does not have a scratch, but I bruised a foot in the mishap.

The hard part is always to put the heavy bike back on its wheels.

Caravan of pack mules on the Yamunotri trail (India)

Yamunotri can only be reached by a 8 Km foot trail, so all the supply are hauled up using caravans of pack mules.

Here, the caravan returns (with no load) to the nearby village of Janki Chatti.

Construction of the planned townships "Gaur City 1" (closer, on the right) and "Gaur City 2" (further, on the left), East of Delhi (India)

An entire neighborhood is being built to provide housing and commercial spaces for the growing middle-class in the Delhi area.

Villages and agricultural lands have been bulldozed to make room for this huge planned development, part of the "Greater Noida" project.

Divya Shila, the sacred rock near Yamunotri Temple (India)

The powerful rock pillar located near the Surya Kund (sacred hot springs) at Yamunotri, Divya Shila presents a ethereal feeling to the devotees. It is customary that all the devotees should make pujas (prayers) here at Divya Shila before they enter Yamunotri.

The rock is part of the mountain and embedded in the wall of the temple. It is surrounded by a small decorated shrine.
