Harishchandra Ghat is one of the Burning Ghats of Varanasi, where the dead are cremated day and night on the bank of the Ganges river.

The corpse of the dead are cremated on funeral pyres, until only ashes remain. Then, the ashes are thrown in the Ganges river. The process takes about 3 hours.

Everyone in the village was very interested by me (and my motorbike), since obviously very few strangers (and white persons) ever visit their village. They seemed quite surprised and amused to see me exploring their very poor village.

Crooked wooden stairs leading to the canopy platform at the NW exit of the Fairy Cave.

Fairy Cave is a large natural cave near the village of Bau, about 35 Km SW of Kuching (Borneo).

The cave continues for about 200m toward the NW and reaches another exit with a nice canopy platform, at the top-end of a shaky wooden stairs (with a few missing steps). You need a flashlight if you want to explore the entire cave and go to this other exit.

This temple is a place of worship to cure skin diseases like chicken pox.

Polluted water - Environment - quick-silver pollution

New Idria is a ghost town located in a remote area of the Coast Range of California (USA), outside the town of Hollister. It was once a center for mercury (quick silver) and asbestos mining. New Idria was at its peak well before the Gold Rush in California of the 1840's and 1860's. There are still high levels of mercury and asbestos polution in the area.

If you don't mind ignoring all the "no trespassing" signs, you can visit an amazing mercury smelter with four large "Gould" rotary furnances. This smelter was abandoned in the 1970's. All those photos were taken in May 2004.

Country veterinarian spays a female piglet (Vietnam)

Piglet is put back into its cage after the surgery!

Spaying is a common and simple surgical operation to remove or disable a female animal’s ovaries.

Here the operation takes place in the village's pig market. The screaming piglet is attached up-side down on a piece of wood. The veterinarian performs a small incision that does not cause any bleeding (he must have done that operation very often and knows exactly where to cut). Then he inserts his bare fingers (no gloves, no scrubbing) in the piglet's belly through the incision to find the ovaries. Hopefully the animal has a good immune system! The ovaries are extracted, ligatured and put back inside, then the incision is stitched. Of course no anesthetic is used, so the piglet was very vocal during the entire operation that lasted no more than 5 minutes. After the operation the piglet seemed totally exhausted and suddenly very quite, after oinking very loudly during the whole ordeal.

Welder repairing a broken shock on my motorbike, in Sikkim (India)

The ring at the top of my right shock broke (that's where the top of the shock gets attached to the bracket on the frame). You can see the shock with the broken ring on this photo.

I was lucky to find a welder in the closest village. His shop was closed and he was home on a day off, but he opened it for me.

Of course he did not have a replacement shock that would fit, but in a pile of mechanical junk, he found an old broken shock from a minibus that had a ring about the same size. He managed to cut it off and arc-weld it to my shock. See also this photo.

Then he had to do some work on the frame bracket since the new ring was slightly larger than the original and would not fit.

After 4 hours of work, my motorbike was fixed. This guy did an excellent job, as the repaired shock never broke again. And this guy charged by the regular price for the work, about $3. I am so grateful. Indian mechanics and welders are so resourceful!

Those boats are used for ferrying the Hindu pilgrims to a beach across the Ganges river, where they can take the Holy bath in cleaner water.

Savanna is spinning fire staffs under the full moon.

That's one of my first fire photos with my new Sony A55 SLT camera (translucent mirror and EVF). As you can see, the quality as pretty good at 3200 ISO, with less noise than the A700 at 1600 ISO.

GPS coordinates are good, but GPS Altitude = 140.8 m Below Sea Level is not quite right!

Palm Oil Mill Waste (Borneo)

This is the pile of oil palm fruits that have been pressed in the mill to extract the plam oil.

There are efforts to compost this oil palm waste, but it requires constant spraying of water otherwise the waste just dries up.

The management of this mill was very upset that I was taking photo of this waste, which by the way, was located outside the perimeter of the mill.

Arc welding repair on my motorcycle rack (India)

Luggage racks on Royal Enfield Bullet motorbike have the tendency to crack and break frequently, due to weak brackets, poor design and vibrations.

This guy fixed my cracked brackets in a small village in Sikkim.

He is arc welding with no protection of any kind, not even welding glasses, which is quite common in poorer areas that only have the bear minimum supplies and equipment. Of course he did an excellent job, and charged me the normal price for the repair (a couple of dollars).

The Jadh Ganga is a tributary of the Bhagirathi river, one of the headstreams of the Ganges.

Jadh Ganga originates in Tibet, China, north of Mana Pass. The upper valley of Jadh Ganga is claimed by China and controlled by India.

As you can see, I am really happy to have reached the Pinnacles in Gunung Mulu National Park (Borneo Island)

The Mulu Pinnacles are Karstic rock formations in the shape of huge vertical sharp blades up to about 50 m (150 feet) high, in a remote rain forest over Gunung Api mountain. The Pinnacles were formed by erosion of the Karstic limestone rock forming the mountain.

The shoe he is fixing was so old and used that I could not believe it was worth fixing. But for the tribe people, fixing old shoes is worth it, since it costs only a couple of cents, while a new paire costs probably close to one dollar.

Ancient Khasi memorial stones, in the East Khasi Hills, in Meghalaya (India)

I noticed a large number of those small square stone structures (about 20-30 cm side for the center hole).

From reading various old books about the Khasi people ancient funeral traditions, I believe that those square structures are small burial chamber, i.e. small boxes where the ashes of the dead were kept, temporarily before a big ceremony (that did not take place too often) where they were moved into a larger Cinerarium (or large burial chamber), i.e. basically a communal tomb holding the remains of all the Tribe's elders.

During this holidays period, a Thai tradition consists in throwing copious amounts of water to others as a way to wish a happy new year. Chiang Mai's old defensive moat provide a endless source of water for the occasion.

This was the beautiful old door of my hostel (Kedar Lodge) in the maze of tiny passages in the old city of Varanasi (India).

The hostel was set in an old private house, with an inside courtyard and its own private water well. It was a good place to stay, run be a very nice family.

In developing countries, old-style Cathodic Ray Tube (CRT) TV screens are still used, as they are much cheaper than modern flat-screen LCD displays. With cheap labor, CRT can be refurbished and re-used.

Those are refurbished CRT tubes near an Electronics market in Delhi.

SFPD Police cracking-down and arresting many peaceful revelers during the Bay to Breakers footrace festival. It did not appear that the people they arrested were drunk or causing any trouble. They got arrested just because they were partying in the street. Police apparently had orders to crack-down on all festivities on city streets at the 2011 Bay to Breakers race.

SFPD Police did not arrest people that were partying on Park land (Pan handle and Golden Gate Park). I suppose that the rules for arresting people on Park property are a bit different.

Vale Pergamo was hitchhiking and i gave her a lift from Jujuy Capital to Tilcara.

Carnival 2010 in the streets of Tilcara (Argentina).

During Carnival festivities in the small village of Tilcara, in the Andes mountains, young men dress up as devils (diablos) with colorful costumes covered with mirrors. Women hold the tail of a devil and everyone is drinking and dancing to the music of marching bands.

I was able to explore the tunnel up to a point where it was flooded (the water pumps were not functionning, but there was some electric lights). The tunnel is obviously unfinished. Not sure what this tunnel is for. I think it maybe to drive heavy equipment to the site, like turbines for the power house, since the small mountain roads cannot be used by heavy trucks.

This is part of a semi-abandoned unfinished Hydro-Power Project on the Teesta river in Sikkim (India). The project is developed by Lanco Infratech Limited.

Water buffalo cow head (Borneo)

In case you're wondering, the rest of the cow is behind the head, but you can't see it on this photo (that's because I used a wide-angle lens and i was very close from the animal's nose).

After I took a couple of photos of this water buffalo cow having a mud bath, she decided to be my friend and she followed me for the rest of the afternoon.

Ascending the via ferrata Tridentina, Dolomites Mountains (Italian Alps).

The climbing route involves ascending more than 2,500 feet (750m) of almost vertical cliff, equipped with cables and occasional metal ladders or steps.

Welder repairing a broken shock on my motorbike, in Sikkim (India)

The ring at the top of my right shock broke (that's where the top of the shock gets attached to the bracket on the frame). You can see the shock with the broken ring on this photo.

I was lucky to find a welder in the closest village. His shop was closed and he was home on a day off, but he opened it for me.

Of course he did not have a replacement shock that would fit, but in a pile of mechanical junk, he found an old broken shock from a minibus that had a ring about the same size. He managed to cut it off and arc-weld it to my shock. See also this photo and this photo.

Then he had to do some work on the frame bracket since the new ring was slightly larger than the original and would not fit.

After 4 hours of work, my motorbike was fixed. This guy did an excellent job, as the repaired shock never broke again. And this guy charged by the regular price for the work, about $3. I am so grateful. Indian mechanics and welders are so resourceful!

Indigenous Quechua women in the street - La Paz (Bolivia)

Those Quechua women wear the colorful traditional costume, complete with bowler style hat. The hat has been worn by Quechua and Aymara women since the 1920's, when it was brought to the country by British railway workers and are still commonly worn today.

Old man walking with dog in Iruya (Argentina)

Iruya is a beautiful but very remote village in Northern Argentina. The dirt road that reaches the village is about 50Km long. It fords several rivers and goes over a 4000 meter pass. Iruya is reachable daily by local bus from Humahuaca (unless rain makes the road impassable).

This was on the sandy flood-plain on the bank of the Ganges river, across from the Ghats. It is a popular beach for the Hindu pilgrims to take their Holy Dip.
