Free Tibet / anti-China protests (San Francisco)
The name of the game is always money, and when it comes to the CIA's war against China by promoting a "Free Tibet", that is certainly true. Tibet has one of the world's largest reserve of uranium, as well as some oil, gold and copper. Read more here: www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2008/04/395803.html

Bamboo bridge near Mawlynnong in the East Khasi Hills, in Meghalaya (India)
When rivers are too wide to grow living root bridges across them, the Khasi people build foot bridges with bamboo and rattan (they use no nylon rope or metal wire, it is 100% organic).
This bamboo bridge has a span of more than 20 meters (60 feet) and passes 10 meters (30 feet) above a river. They need to rebuild the bridge every few years because it gets rotten.

Floating Trash on the riachuelo (La Boca, Buenos Aires)
No, this is not the Great Pacific Garbage Patch!
Half of the trash is made of plastic bottles. Plastic bottles (especially mineral water bottles) are evil. Please drink tap water (or purified / filtered tap water if needed).
Sale of plastic bottles should not be permitted in countries that do not recycle plastic trash.
And in countries where plastic trash is recycled, there should be a tax on plastic bottles, used to finance recycling and to encourage people to bring their plastic trash to recycling centers where they would get that tax back. This is the case in many states in the US, and a lot of unemployed people make money by scavenging plastic trash and bringing it to recycling centers, where they get paid for the trash they bring. As a result, there is much less plastic trash in the environment.
One example is the California CRV: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Redemption_Value.

Hindu Festival in a small village in Jharkhand state (India).
View the video.
Based on the date (April 11, 2013), this may be Ugadi or Gudi Padwa, a celebration of the New Year's Day according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar.

If you can identify the exact name of the Festival or have more info about this ritual, please post a comment or email me!
The Hindu priest of the village walks from a Temple to a nearby pond, over the shoulders of the young men of the village, while a group of older men beat drums with canes.
As soon as the priest has walked on the shoulders of a man, that man runs back to the front of the line and sits on the ground again.
The bare-foot Hindu priest will walk all the way to the pond without touching the ground, and the ceremony will continue near the water.

Saints Peter and Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao. The Diocese of Tuguegarao was erected on April 10, 1910. Pope Paul VI elevated the Diocese of Tuguegarao into an Archdiocese on September 21, 1974. The church with the belfry is the biggest Spanish colonial church in Cagayan Valley built by the Dominicans who came to evangelize Cagayan Valley. It was constructed from January 17, 1761 to 1767 under the supervision of Fr. Antonio Lobato, O.P. The cathedral suffered massive destruction in World War II losing its pipe organ, three wooden retablos, pulpit, wooden choir loft and the painted wooden ceiling all of which were from the early 18th century. The old convent adjacent to the cathedral church was also razed to the ground during the war and was demolished to make way for a new one. The complex was rebuilt by Msgr. Bishop Constance Jurgens who is now entombed inside the church. The Cathedral is also said to be one of the beautiful structures that stood in the land and because of that impression, its portrait can also be seen in Vatican City. The traditional ringing of the cathedral bells for the Angelus and during Mass is still being practiced today. (Credit for the Info: Tuguegarao Tourist Board)

This calf has two extra legs attached to the top of her neck. This is a birth defect called Polymelia, where conjoint twins starts developing but one twin degenerated completely except for one or more limbs, which end up attached to the other twin.
With cows, the one or two extra limbs are often attached to the top of the cow's neck. This extra legs are shrunken, deformed and non-functional, and they get strange long nails (since the nails on normal cow legs get worn by walking).
In India, when a calf is born with extra leg or two, this is like winning the jackpot: those 5 legged and 6 legged cows are seen are very holy, and the owner will parade them around and receive donations from Hindu devotees.
These two calves (one with 5 legs, and the other one with 6 legs) were transported around the city in a specially designed motor rickshaw, covered with images of the famous "Sai Baba" (not sure why).

Photographer with a large format chamber camera taking a picture of one of the Sailing Stones on the Racetrack dry lake in Death Valley (California)
Sailing stones are rocks that move in long tracks on the smooth and perfectly flat surface of a dry lake, without human or animal intervention. The rocks are most likely propelled by strong winds while entrapped in floating ice sheets (or icebergs), after winter rains flooded the dry lake and made the mud soft and slippery.

Fireworks show before the Man is burned
Found this interesting news clip:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Black Rock City (AP) - After the early torching of the Burning Man festival signature figure by an arsonist, the Burning Man Organization decided that all future copies of the "Man" would be made in China and shipped to Nevada.
"We already purchase all our fireworks from China", said Larry Harvey, one of the co-founders of the Burning Man festival. "So it made sense to outsource the Man too."
"Chinese-built copies of the 40-foot tall Man will cost us about 10 times less than domestic copies, and this will save us a lot of green stuff", Harvey explained, referring to this year’s "Green Man" theme.
"The Chinese Man will be 100% identical to the domestic version, very combustible and based on the same original blueprints from my good friend John Law. We don't expect any lead poisoning problems", Harvey added.
There has been rumors that the significant cost saving will permit the festival organization to burn a copy of the Man every night of the week, which some see as environmentally questionable as well as a disguised way to prevent any future early torching of the figure.
The first batch of Chinese-made Man is expected to ship early august 2008, and there are currently no plans to make Chinese copies available to the general public, although this is being discussed in the organization.

The powerful rock pillar located near the Surya Kund (sacred hot springs, in the back on this photo) at Yamunotri, Divya Shila presents a ethereal feeling to the devotees. It is customary that all the devotees should make pujas (prayers) here at Divya Shila before they enter Yamunotri.
The rock is part of the mountain and embedded in the wall of the temple. It is surrounded by a small decorated shrine.

Detail of memorial stick with Native American offerings on the site of Captain Jack's Stronghold, in the Lava Beds National Monument (California).
This unofficial indigenous memorial commemorates an episode of the Modoc war, where a small Native American band led by Modoc chief "Captain Jack" resisted a large organized army force, before being eventually taken and killed. The natives used the natural features of the lava beds to defend their stronghold.

Steam locomotives in the Darjeeling Train Yard (India)
View more photos of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
The two locomotives in the back (#788 "Tusker" and -#782 "Mountaineer") are warm and ready to work. One of them will be used to pull the next train, while a spare one is kept ready in case of last-minute problems with the main one. Because it takes hours to heat-up the steam boiler, the two steam engines must be warm and ready hours before the train is scheduled to leave. A railroad worker is staying up all night and feeding coal in their furnaces to keep both engines warm.
The locomotive in the front (#804 "Queen of the Hills") is undergoing maintenance. It will get new wheels.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Plastic water containers waiting to be filled at a village water hand pump (India).
Like in most villages in India, there is no running water and people get their water from hand pumps or water wells.
Traditionally, women and girls are in charge of the water chores. Boys and men sometimes help them.
This photo is part of a series that I took in a small rural Indian village.
