Elevated bamboo walkway in Annah Rais traditional Longhouse village (Borneo)

Traditional longhouse villages are formed of group of houses built on stilts. The houses of a group are connected with a bamboo walkway that allows people to go from one house to another one without having to walk in the mud.

The Annah Rais village is obviously maintained in pristine conditions because it is a known tourist attraction, but many indigenous people still live in this village. Most inhabitants speak english because nowadays their main source of revenue is by selling souvenirs and traditional items to visiting tourists.

Truck hanging off a bridge after serious traffic accident (India)

The accident happened shortly before, and the truck drivers (or what was left of them) had already been removed from the wreck.

It may look strange that the guardrail seems intact In fact a good section of the guardrail was destroyed (you can see the broken guardrail on this photo). The truck must have been going pretty fast when it flew off the bridge and hit the ground pretty fast and then rotated into a near vertical position after its front smashed the ground.

If you know the name of this Hindu ceremony, please post a Comment!

This is a Hindu offering ceremony to Lord Shiva, performed by members of a large Ashram at the Kumbh Mela festival.

Thousands of Hindu devotees each made hundreds of small lingams with soft clay, each lingam having three small white eyes. Then they all walked in a procession from the Ashram toward the nearby Ganges river, carrying trays on their heads, with all the small clay lingams on the trays. All the lingams were then thrown in the Ganges river, as an offering to Lord Shiva.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

Old rusted diesel-electric train engines in the semi-abandoned train yard in Puerto Limon (Costa Rica)

If you know the make and model of those train engines, please email me or post a comment.

Diesel-electric engine work this way: A diesel engine generate electricity by powering large generators, and this electricity then powers large electric motors attached to the axles of the wheels. This way there is no need for gears and a clutch, so the system is lighter, simpler and more efficient.

I jumped a fence to take those amazing photos. The train depot is (almost) abandoned. Several rusted, half disassembled diesel-electric train engines are sitting in the yard.

Rebuilt Man is installedThe first Man was destroyed prematurely by arson by Paul Addis (RIP).

Found this interesting news clip:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Black Rock City (AP) - After the early torching of the Burning Man festival signature figure by an arsonist, the Burning Man Organization decided that all future copies of the "Man" would be made in China and shipped to Nevada.

"We already purchase all our fireworks from China", said Larry Harvey, one of the co-founders of the Burning Man festival. "So it made sense to outsource the Man too."

"Chinese-built copies of the 40-foot tall Man will cost us about 10 times less than domestic copies, and this will save us a lot of green stuff", Harvey explained, referring to this year’s "Green Man" theme.

"The Chinese Man will be 100% identical to the domestic version, very combustible and based on the same original blueprints from my good friend John Law. We don't expect any lead poisoning problems", Harvey added.

There has been rumors that the significant cost saving will permit the festival organization to burn a copy of the Man every night of the week, which some see as environmentally questionable as well as a disguised way to prevent any future early torching of the figure.

The first batch of Chinese-made Man is expected to ship early august 2008, and there are currently no plans to make Chinese copies available to the general public, although this is being discussed in the organization.
