High resolution panorama of two of the 18 temporary pontoon bridges (i.e. floating bridges) installed during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

Looks amazing when viewed in high-resolution.

These pontoon bridges are over the Ganges (Ganga) river. Those floating bridges are built on top of large empty metal tanks, and are anchored to the river bottom with ropes on the upstream side of the bridge. Those bridges are mostly used for pedestrian traffic. During high affluence periods when large crowds are crossing the floating bridges, bridges are one-way, with alternating direction for each other bridge. This rule was taken after a stampede in a previous year caused the bridge railing to fail and many people to fall in the river and drawn (most of the Hindu pilgrims cannot swim!).

The water was very low in the Ganges river at the time, so in fact this bridge was not floating, but just sitting on the sandy bottom of the shallow river.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

I found this one in Rhyolite Ghost Town (Nevada), near Death Valley.

Amazingly, there are no bullet holes in the sign!

Of the left, you can see the famous suspension footbridge, visible from the road below, that passes over a vertiginous vertical chasm.

The climbing route involves ascending more than 2,500 feet (750m) of almost vertical cliff, equipped with cables and occasional metal ladders or steps.

Black Rock City (AP) - After the early torching of the Burning Man festival signature figure by an arsonist, the Burning Man Organization decided that all future copies of the "Man" would be made in China and shipped to Nevada.

"We already purchase all our fireworks from China", said Larry Harvey, one of the co-founders of the Burning Man festival. "So it made sense to outsource the Man too.

Chinese-built copies of the 40-foot tall Man will cost us about 10 times less than domestic copies, and this will save us a lot of green stuff", Harvey explained, referring to this year’s "Green Man" theme.

"The Chinese Man will be 100% identical to the domestic version, very combustible and based on the same original blueprints from my good friend John Law. We don't expect any lead poisoning problems", Harvey added.

There has been rumors that the significant cost saving will permit the festival organization to burn a copy of the Man every night of the week, which some see as environmentally questionable as well as a disguised way to prevent any future early torching of the figure."

"The first batch of Chinese-made Man is expected to ship early august 2008, and there are currently no plans to make Chinese copies available to the general public, although this is being discussed in the organization.

This is the Sangam, where Hindu pilgrims bathe in the Ganges river, at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).I took this photo in the evening, where few people were bathing.

The wooden fence in the water and the small boats near the fence are for safety, as most of the Hindu pilgrims can't swim!

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

Little girls playing with a charango, an Andean lute instrument - Iruya (Argentina)

Iruya is a beautiful but very remote village in Northern Argentina. The dirt road that reaches the village is about 50Km long. It fords several rivers and goes over a 4000 meter pass. Iruya is reachable daily by local bus from Humahuaca (unless rain makes the road impassable).

I took this photo at a cattle market I stumbled upon on the road in West Bengal (India).

All the local farmers were there to buy and sell livestock.

Severed cow heads in front of meat market selling beef meat, in Meghalaya (India)

It may sound strange, but in some regions of India, people do eat cows.

I took this series of photos in a village in the East Khasi Hills, a region of the Meghalaya State in North-East India, inhabited by the Khasi people. Khasi people were animist but most converted to Christianity, and they do eat beef.

In this village, several meat shops were selling beef meat and they displayed the severed heads of the slaughtered cows on the ground in front of their shop. They have no fridges so the animals are slaughtered early in the morning, and all the fresh meat and organs must be sold by the end of the day.

The Bunny march is a flash-mob type event where all the bunnies of the city assemble and march to The Man, then to Center Camp, causing devastation and mayhem. They attached giant bunny ears to "The Man". Their leader is the Uber Bunny (Steven Raspa).

Women of the Dao tribe often wear beautiful headwear with many metal pins holding their hair.

The teeth covered with gold-like metal indicate that this woman is married. It's convenient: as soon as the woman or teenage girl smiles, you know if she is single or not! Girls from ethnic minorities (i.e. tribes) marry at about 14 or 15 years of age.

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

One of the very kitch Hindu God sculptures at the ISKCON (Hare Krishna) Ashram at Kumbh Mela 2013. The purple deity is Krishna in His four-handed (Vishnu) form.

This is Laxmi-Narayana, Krishna in his four-armed form as Lord Vishnu with Laxmi Devi, laying on Ananta Sesha, with Lord Brahma having emerged from the lotus flower from his navel.

Those metal sculptures were mechanically animated, like low-tech animatronics.

I took this photo at a cattle market I stumbled upon on the road in West Bengal (India).

All the local farmers were there to buy and sell livestock.

This farmer is walking with his skinny cow on a leash.
