Tiết canh (Tiet canh) is raw blood soup - Mèo Vac, Vietnam

Blood soup (tiết canh) is made with raw blood of ducks or geese (sometimes pigs), with peanuts and herbs on top. This is the typical protein-rich breakfast of the country people in Northern Vietnam, but is very dangerous because of the H5N1 bird flu virus. The Vietnamese government is promoting public awareness about the risks, but try to explain bird flu to the country people...

This blog has more information on tiết canh.

Country veterinarian spays a female piglet (Vietnam)

This is the ovaries!

Spaying is a common and simple surgical operation to remove or disable a female animal’s ovaries.

Here the operation takes place in the village's pig market. The screaming piglet is attached up-side down on a piece of wood. The veterinarian performs a small incision that does not cause any bleeding (he must have done that operation very often and knows exactly where to cut). Then he inserts his bare fingers (no gloves, no scrubbing) in the piglet's belly through the incision to find the ovaries. Hopefully the animal has a good immune system! The ovaries are extracted, ligatured and put back inside, then the incision is stitched. Of course no anesthetic is used, so the piglet was very vocal during the entire operation that lasted no more than 5 minutes. After the operation the piglet seemed totally exhausted and suddenly very quite, after oinking very loudly during the whole ordeal.

See the other photos of the piglet spaying operation.

Burning Man set on fire early due to arson

Read the whole story on laughingsquid.com.

Found this interesting related news clip:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Black Rock City (AP) - After the early torching of the Burning Man festival signature figure by an arsonist, the Burning Man Organization decided that all future copies of the "Man" would be made in China and shipped to Nevada.

"We already purchase all our fireworks from China", said Larry Harvey, one of the co-founders of the Burning Man festival. "So it made sense to outsource the Man too."

"Chinese-built copies of the 40-foot tall Man will cost us about 10 times less than domestic copies, and this will save us a lot of green stuff", Harvey explained, referring to this year’s "Green Man" theme.

"The Chinese Man will be 100% identical to the domestic version, very combustible and based on the same original blueprints from my good friend John Law. We don't expect any lead poisoning problems", Harvey added.

There has been rumors that the significant cost saving will permit the festival organization to burn a copy of the Man every night of the week, which some see as environmentally questionable as well as a disguised way to prevent any future early torching of the figure.

The first batch of Chinese-made Man is expected to ship early august 2008, and there are currently no plans to make Chinese copies available to the general public, although this is being discussed in the organization.

This is a scubadiving resort called Uncle Chan, located on Mabul Island, near the famous dive spot of Sipadan Island (Borneo)

I went for one day of scubadiving with Uncle Chan. The price was not too expensive, the equipment was good, and the divemasters and crew were very nice. I could not dive at Sipadan Island (the best spot), because you need to reserve in advance or pay a lot more due to limited number of permits issued (and scalping / gouging by dive operators).

The diving at Mabul Island, just North of Sipadan, was good, with a lot of marine life in artificial reefs. I'd say it's not worth going there just for the diving, but if you are in the region, it's not a bad experience.

Warzone? no, this is just the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown (San Francisco)

In fact it's not fog, it's thick rancid toxic smoke from pyrotechnics.

Each year, late on the night of the Chinese New Year, chaos erupts in the heart of Chinatown. An insane amount of very illegal firecrackers and fireworks are lit-up and detonated in the streets. The air fills-up with thick, rancid, toxic smoke. Sparks and rockets fly randomly in all directions. The local Police knows that they cannot stop the madness, so they prefer to stay away. Participants are highly advised to wear ear and eyes protection.

This unoficial event dubbed "Chinatown Bang" attracts local Chinese Americans as well as members of the San Francisco Cacophony Society. After running out of ammunitions, participants celebrate the Chinese lunar new year in local bars.

Baba with pointy colorful hat with hippies sitting in a circle around the campfire, where supper will be served.

This is the "Rainbow Camp", a Hippie camp set-up at the northern edge of the Kumbh Mela festival ground. The camp was organized by a Rasta Yogi man called "Panama Baba", and all non-Hindu travelers were welcome there.
