A large poster of Pilot Baba with a group of Indian Soldiers. "Pilot Baba" is a famous Hindu Guru who used to be a Pilot in the Indian Army. He was a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force and fought in the ‘65 and ‘71 wars involving Pakistan.

He then decided to leave his military career and became a Mahayogi Guru, with numerous Ashrams across Northern India.

Pilot Baba had one of the largest and most luxurious Ashram at Kumbh Mela 2013. His Ashram included an indoor swimming pool, satellite WiFi, and air conditioned-room with European-style toilets for his international "guests" (mostly Russian and Japanese).

The Bihlangna valley, in the back on the photo, is now flooded by the Tehri reservoir (India)

The Tehri dam (on the right) is the highest dam in India and one of the highest in the world.

It is hard to imagine that right there, on this photo, deep under the artificial lake, just at the bottom on the dam, there is a submerged city (Tehri, now called "Old Tehri") that was the provincial capital, with a population of about 25,000. The people from Old Tehri have been relocated to New Tehri, a planned city built on the mountain above the dam.

The Tehri Dam was (and still is) a very controversial project, as it flooded two valleys resulting in the destruction of numerous villages and a town (Tehri), all now submerged, and forced the relocation of about 100,000 people.

For more photos and info about the controversial Tehri Hydro Power project, go to the Tehri Dam & Lake photo series.

Steam locomotives at the Darjeeling train yard (India)

The two locomotives in the front (#788 "Tusker" and -#782 "Mountaineer") are warm and ready to work. One of them will be used to pull the next train, while a spare one is kept ready in case of last-minute problems with the main one. Because it takes hours to heat-up the steam boiler, the two steam engines must be warm and ready hours before the train is scheduled to leave. A railroad worker is staying up all night and feeding coal in their furnaces to keep both engines warm.

The locomotive in the back (#804 "Queen of the Hills") is undergoing maintenance.

View more photos of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Inscription - Shumen historical mosque (Bulgaria)

That is the seal of Ottoman Empires. It is neither completely Arabic, nor Persian, It is a combined language called "Osmanlica" in Turkiye, meaning something like Ottomanic.

This tughra must be Selim III's. The mosque in Shumen it is on was built in 1740-1744, and the only Ottoman sultan called Selim after that date was Selim III, who ruled from 1789-1807. The tughra's got more complicated as the years went on, the first, from the 14th century, were relatively simple. Apart from the sultan's name much of the calligraphy is symbolic and not words as such. For example, the two lines reaching out to the right are symbols for swords, and thus the military power of the sultan.

(I must give credit to Renal and Graham Spicer for the information about the tughra)

This aerial photo, taken at dawn, shows the Kumbh Mela ground toward the end of the event.

Most of the Hindu pilgrims have left. Camps and Ashrams are being taken down and infrastructure is being dismantled. It looks like a ghost town, and a few weeks later, nothing will remain. A couple of months later, the Ganges river will rise with the monsoon rains and this floodplain will be under about 10 feet of water.

All the street lights that can be seen in the far back are part of the Kumbh Mela "temporary city" built in the flood plain of the Ganges river, near Allahabad.

Kumbh Mela occupies about 56 Square Kilometers (22 Square Miles) of sandy ground in the Ganges floodplain. The "permanent" population is 5 to 10 Million Hindu devotees housed in thousands of temporary Ashrams and tent camps,

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

Oobleck, a non-newtonian fluid made with cornstarch and waterThe artists who created this installation are Alex, Mary, and Max.

Corn strarch and water (plus some optional green food coloring) creates a strange thick non-newtonian fluid called Oobleck. When stress is applied to the liquid it exhibits properties of a solid, i.e. its viscosity increases tremendously. A hammer will bounce on it, but you can sink your hand into it with no effort if you do it slowly. it's really fun to play with, and you can do the mix in your kitchen! (i discovered the strange properties of this mix when i was a kid, playing in the kitchen).

Check this very amusing video showing what you can do with a pool filled-up with this liquid. Just like Jesus, you can walk on the liquid!

In the center of the photo, the mountain pass is called "Passo Principe", and there is a small Refugio hidden near the rocks, just left of the pass. You can see the access trail to the Refugio on the left.

The mountain on the right is Catinaccio d'Antermoia, and it is equipped with a nice Via Ferrata.

Via Ferratas are climbing routes permanently equipped with a safety cable. For more info about via ferrata, go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_ferrata.

Warzone? no, this is just the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in Chinatown (San Francisco)

Each year, late on the night of the Chinese New Year, chaos erupts in the heart of Chinatown. An insane amount of very illegal firecrackers and fireworks are lit-up and detonated in the streets. The air fills-up with thick, rancid, toxic smoke. Sparks and rockets fly randomly in all directions. The local Police knows that they cannot stop the madness, so they prefer to stay away. Participants are highly advised to wear ear and eyes protection.

This unoficial event dubbed "Chinatown Bang" attracts local Chinese Americans as well as members of the San Francisco Cacophony Society. After running out of ammunitions, participants celebrate the Chinese lunar new year in local bars.

Red dao tribe mother and child (Sa Pa, Vietnam)

The Dao (pronounced Zao) are the 9th largest ethnic group in Vietnam with a population of just under 500,000. They belong to the Hmong Dao language group and are believed to have started migrating from China in the 13th century. The women wear some of the most colorful and diverse costumes of all ethnic groups but can be identified by their black trousers richly embroidered with flower or small star patterns. Their jackets can be red or black usually with embroidered borders. The ensemble is topped by a black or red turban together with chunky silver jewelry. In addition most Dao women shave off their eyebrows and foreheads as this is traditionally regarded as a sign of beauty.

For more info about the Red Dao people, go to globalwanderings.co.uk/ethnic_minorities/dao.shtml.
