Cracked burnt valve in my motorcycle engine (It's a 1988 Kawasaki KLR 650).
That explains why it would not run too well lately, and i had a really hard time starting the engine. There was virtually no compression at all (which is no surprise when you see that hole).
What's amazing is that the engine could still run at all with that enormous hole in one of the exhaust valves, as long as i kept it above 3,000 RPM. I was able to drive the bike 700 miles at 70 Mph to bring it home in San Francisco, from Death Valley.
I think it started as a hairline crack (like the one that can be seen on the left side of the damaged valve), and then slowly got larger with the years and the hot gases flowing in the crack. Also, because of the crack, the valve was not seating well, so it got hotter (normally valve heat dissipate in the head when the valve is closed). This crack (combined with a tight valve adjustment) contributed to weaken the steel of this exhaust valve even more, causing what's called a "burnt valve'.
I checked the other valves and they are in decent shape. There is a minor leak in one of the intake valves (I might need to get this one reseated). The good part is that the damaged valve is not bent, and the valve seat is clean. So i'll just replace that valve and lap it.
The piston is clean, and luckily no shrapnel debris from that valve got in the combustion chamber.

Bena Primitive Village on Flores Island (Indonesia)
In Central Flores, traditional villages are in the shape of a circle of wooden houses facing a central plaza. The village plaza is a cemetery, with graves and special structures built for the spirits. The miniature houses are for the female spirits, and the straw umbrellas are for the male spirits.
Megalith / menhirs (large pointy stones planted in the ground) could me memorial stones or ancient graves (I am not sure).
On this photo, you can see ancient memorial stones or graves.
This one is quite large, maybe used for an extended family, or for someone important like a village chief. No-one knows, and the ancient stones are unmarked (maybe dating from a time where indigenous people could not write). It may also be a Megalithic Cenotaph (memorial monument), rather than actual graves.
This village is still maintained by its inhabitants (mostly elderly people). Some other traditional villages in the area are now deserted and kept just for tourists, when their inhabitants moved to more comfortable "modern" concrete houses with a satellite TV dish.

Road construction (Vietnam)
1) put some wood between the barrels of asphalt and start a fire so that the asphalt will melt and become liquid. If no wood is available, use anything that can burn, like old tires. Bonus points if you can burn something really toxic.
2) When the asphalt start melting, scoop some at the top and pour it on the wood. Asphalt burns well, so this will help melting the rest of the asphalt.
3) Repeat step 2 until the asphalt in entirely melted in the barrels. This will take several hours and produce a really nice plume of toxic smoke. If you are lucky, you will only need to burn 30% of your asphalt to melt the rest, so you have 70% asphalt left to spread on the road.

Brad's doing a fly-by with his powered paraglider at sunset.
Not sure if this flight was very "legal", since the air-space above Black Rock City was very regulated this year (drones not allowed to fly without a permit).
But we saw several BLM and Sheriff cars drive by (you can see one in this photo), and none of the officers cared about Brad and his powered paraglider taking off from the playa!

LOVE Bicycles by Gary Evans and friends.
Photo taken at the Burning Man 2012 festival (Black Rock Desert, Nevada).
Gary Evans wrote:
Hi There, my name is Gary Evans and I co-created this project with my dear friend Richard Stein in Portland, Oregon. Our project was to spread love, so we set out to create bicycles with huge glowing letters and attached actual custom silk-screened love letters (made by our talented and dear friend Kerri McKeighen). We rode around Burning Man looking for people to surround with love, sometimes literally as you can imagine with the four bikes. We asked people if they would like to write a love letter and to please write it to yourself and if you said yes, we handed you a blank card and a pen from a box. When finished, we said you can have any already attached love letter from any bike and take it for your very own, but please leave the letter that you wrote in its' place. It c reated a self-generating system of love letters that were so heart-felt and creative. Many people were moved to tears. Needless to say, we loved doing this, and we continue to do this at Last Thursday Street Fair in Portland, World Naked Bike Ride, and sometimes just for fun! such a great picture! -Love, Gary

The coolest Police Station ever!
This is a Jandarma (that means "police post" in Turkish) near Göreme in Cappadocia (Turkey)
The police station was carved probably centuries ago, and it might have been an ancient roman tomb, since most of the carved hoodoos (or Fairy chimneys) in Cappadocia are in fact ancient tombs, later converted into houses.
The eroded rock formations of Cappadocia look like sandstone, but it is actually volcanic tuff, a type of rock consisting of consolidated volcanic ash that originated from ancient volcanic eruptions in the region.

The Man, by Larry Harvey, Rod Garrett.
This one looks really nice in large size.
In 2009, the Burning Man rises above a 'tangled bank' consisting of irregular wooden triangles. No two elements of this organic composition will be quite the same; together they'll create what's best described as a chaotic truss.
The truss is clearly inspired by the "belgian waffle" installation from 2006.
