Gangotri is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination on the Bhagirathi river, high in the Himalaya mountains. The Bhagirathi is one of the headstreams of the Ganges river.

Gangotri has no full-time inhabitants, and it is just guarded by a few soldiers during the winter time. Early in the season, before thousands of Hindu Yatri (pilgrims) arrive in Gangotri, all the shops are closed. The town comes to life only later, in late spring and summer, when the pilgrims arrive.

When I arrived there in early spring, by motorbike, Gangotri was really like a ghost town!

Only a few locals were there, mostly to repair the accommodations and get them ready for the pilgrims that would come in mass later in the season. Luckily I managed to find a room (very cold, with no heat and with no water) and a place to eat dinner.

By entering the pool, you enter a world where play and collaborative movement can create a cascading effect of swirling light and color. By adding and subtracting light, individuals and groups of people will be able to interact with The Pool in profound ways. The interaction will vary dramatically depending on the number of individuals involved. This dynamic interaction between individuals and The Pool will create environments ranging from curious and playful with few participants to energetic and competitive with many participants. I installed a 9mm static rope at the upper window of the "Goldman Sucks" building, and went rappelling down the facade. I then let a few other rock climbers do it with my climbing harness.

The burning of The Man's effigy at the end of the week-long festival.

As soon as the last burning beam collapsed, a crowd of thousands runs toward the fire and around it in celebration.

I managed to be one of the first ones near the fire (after zig-zagging between a few crowd-controlling Black Rock Rangers - sorry guys!), so i was able to get a few cool photos of the running melee.

This statue was located in the Pilot Baba Ashram.

This is a classic representation of Goddess Kali: She is most often depicted as blue in popular Indian art. Her eyes are red with intoxication, and in absolute rage, her hair is disheveled, and her tongue is lolling. She is often shown naked or just wears a garland of human heads.

Road construction (Vietnam)

1) put some wood between the barrels of asphalt and start a fire so that the asphalt will melt and become liquid. If no wood is available, use anything that can burn, like old tires. Bonus points if you can burn something really toxic.

2) When the asphalt start melting, scoop some at the top and pour it on the wood. Asphalt burns well, so this will help melting the rest of the asphalt.

3) Repeat step 2 until the asphalt in entirely melted in the barrels. This will take several hours and produce a really nice plume of toxic smoke. If you are lucky, you will only need to burn 30% of your asphalt to melt the rest, so you have 70% asphalt left to spread on the road.

Cracked burnt valve in my motorcycle engine (It's a 1988 Kawasaki KLR 650).

That explains why it would not run too well lately, and i had a really hard time starting the engine. There was virtually no compression at all (which is no surprise when you see that hole).

What's amazing is that the engine could still run at all with that enormous hole in one of the exhaust valves, as long as i kept it above 3,000 RPM. I was able to drive the bike 700 miles at 70 Mph to bring it home in San Francisco, from Death Valley.

I think it started as a hairline crack (like the one that can be seen on the left side of the damaged valve), and then slowly got larger with the years and the hot gases flowing in the crack. Also, because of the crack, the valve was not seating well, so it got hotter (normally valve heat dissipate in the head when the valve is closed). This crack (combined with a tight valve adjustment) contributed to weaken the steel of this exhaust valve even more, causing what's called a "burnt valve'.

I checked the other valves and they are in decent shape. There is a minor leak in one of the intake valves (I might need to get this one reseated). The good part is that the damaged valve is not bent, and the valve seat is clean. So i'll just replace that valve and lap it.

The piston is clean, and luckily no shrapnel debris from that valve got in the combustion chamber.

Immense crowd of Hindu pilgrims gathering before dawn on the bank of the Ganges river, near the Sangam, during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India)

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

The Ganges river is on the left side of the photo, and the string of lights far-away on the left are on the other bank of the river.

This photo was taken around 6am, about one hour before sunrise. This was the early morning of January 27 (a full-moon night, called Paush Purnima), one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath. After a 7 km night walk, I arrived at the Sangam area at about 3am, early enough to be well positioned to take a few good photos in this gigantic crowd. The yellowish color is caused by the dim sodium-vapor street lights.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Philippe Glade is a French photographer based in San Francisco.

For 20 years, 1996 to 2016, photographer Philippe Glade documented the unique architectural structures found at the Burning Man festival, and published a photo book entitled "Black Rock City NV, The Ephemeral Architecture of Burning Man".
