Devprayag is a Hindu holy city in India, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet and become the Ganges river.

The point of confluence is called Sangam, and it is a very Holy place in the Hindu religion. Hindu pilgrims come here to take the Holy Bath at the exact confluence point, where there is a Gath (steps).

In Hindu mythology and culture, the Bhagirathi (on the left, with the green water) is considered the source stream of the Ganges. However, in hydrology, the other headstream, Alaknanda (in the center with the brown water), is considered the source stream on account of its great length and discharge.

Mercury Smelter - rotary kiln - rusted - New Idria

For more information about rotary kilns, go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_kiln

New Idria is a ghost town located in a remote area of the Coast Range of California (USA), outside the town of Hollister. It was once a center for mercury (quick silver) and asbestos mining. New Idria was at its peak well before the Gold Rush in California of the 1840's and 1860's. There are still high levels of mercury and asbestos polution in the area.

If you don't mind ignoring all the "no trespassing" signs, you can visit an amazing mercury smelter with four large "Gould" rotary furnances. This smelter was abandoned in the 1970's. All those photos were taken in May 2004.

Go to my New Idria photos for more photos and information about this place.

Fireworks show before the Man is burned

Found this interesting news clip:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Black Rock City (AP) - After the early torching of the Burning Man festival signature figure by an arsonist, the Burning Man Organization decided that all future copies of the "Man" would be made in China and shipped to Nevada.

"We already purchase all our fireworks from China", said Larry Harvey, one of the co-founders of the Burning Man festival. "So it made sense to outsource the Man too."

"Chinese-built copies of the 40-foot tall Man will cost us about 10 times less than domestic copies, and this will save us a lot of green stuff", Harvey explained, referring to this year’s "Green Man" theme.

"The Chinese Man will be 100% identical to the domestic version, very combustible and based on the same original blueprints from my good friend John Law. We don't expect any lead poisoning problems", Harvey added.

There has been rumors that the significant cost saving will permit the festival organization to burn a copy of the Man every night of the week, which some see as environmentally questionable as well as a disguised way to prevent any future early torching of the figure.

The first batch of Chinese-made Man is expected to ship early august 2008, and there are currently no plans to make Chinese copies available to the general public, although this is being discussed in the organization.

Cannabis grows everywhere, wild, just like weed! (Vietnam)

In this valley near Mèo Vac, Cannabis is endemic, i.e. it grows naturally everywhere, just like weed. It is not cultivated, it just grows as far as the eye can see, from the side of the road to the top of the hills.

Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle loaded with luggage on rack (Nepal)

This was my bike (in fact, borrowed from my friend Pierrot), loaded like a mule!

I was travelling with my friend Anne-Laure, so we had two backpacks, a bag of tools and spare parts, my camera gear in the dry bag, and a lot of extra petrol in plastic jerrycans, since there is a chronic shortage and rationing of petrol in Nepal, exacerbated by frequent general strikes and political unrest.

Luckily we were able to secure enough petrol from the Army gas station in Kathmandu, despite the ongoing general strike and rationing, because Nepali Authorities (sometimes) do not enforce petrol rationing on tourists (because tourism is important for the local Nepali economy).

BYOBW - "Bring Your Own Big Wheel" race (San Francisco).

This is a free and unauthorized event. People race with Big Wheel toy tricycles and other non-motorized vehicles down the steep and curvy segment of Vermont Street in Potrero Hill. The racers reach dangerous speed and frequently crash. This race used to take place on the famous curvy segment of Lombard St, but because some of the Lombard St residents did not like the event and asked the police to shut it down, in 2009 they moved the BYOBW race to Vermont St where the neighbors have a more positive attitude.

For more information about this event, please read the album description.

Bamboo bridge near Mawlynnong in the East Khasi Hills, in Meghalaya (India)

When rivers are too wide to grow living root bridges across them, the Khasi people build foot bridges with bamboo and rattan (they use no nylon rope or metal wire, it is 100% organic).

This bamboo bridge has a span of more than 20 meters (60 feet) and passes 10 meters (30 feet) above a river. They need to rebuild the bridge every few years because it gets rotten.

This bamboo bridge was at the end of its life, and the local villagers were planning to rebuild it.

People climbing the giant Coyote sculpture by Bryan Tedrick (bryantedrick.com).

I heard that several people got injured on the Coyote (broken arms / wrists and what not). No-one died. Initially the coyote head could spin. I think many people got hit by the giant metal ears, This was the dangerous part especially if you didn't realize the head could spin. After taking several people to the hospital, they put a sign "Don't climb - Seriously", and locked the head. People kept climbing it anyway, since the sculpture was designed to be climbed. Later, the sign was changed to a more adequate "Climb at your own risks".

View my other photos of the Coyote sculpture.

Trucks crossing - Manali to Leh road (India)

You can see the truck wheel just inches from the drop-off on the edge of the road. Truck drivers need to have nerves of steel in the Himalaya. Mountain roads have no fences, they are narrow (usually just one lane), often slippery, often not paved, very steep and bordered by very deep and steep ravines.
