ARTIST'S IMPRESSION OF DOUBLE ROTATION NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE (NMR).
NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE (NMR) INVOLVES THE ABSORPTION AND EMISSION OF RADIO-FREQUENCY ENERGY BY NUCLEAR SPINS AS THEY OSCILLATE AND REORIENT IN THE PRESENCE OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNALLY APPLIED MAGNETIC FIELDS. SCIENTISTS AT LBL HAVE DEVELOPED A NEW TECHNIQUE, DOUBLE ROTATION NMR, TO STUDY THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ATOMS IN SOLID MATERIALS. THE DOUBLE ROTATION NMR WILL IMPROVE UP TO 100 TIMES THE ACCURACY WITH WHICH SCIENTISTS CAN DISTINGUISH BETWEEN DIFFERENT SPECIFIC LOCATIONS AND POSITIONS OF ATOMS IN A SOLID. IN NMR SPECTROSCOPY, A SAMPLE IS PLACED IN A MAGNETIC FIELD, FORCING THE SPINS INTO ALIGNMENT. THE SAMPLE IS SUBJECTED TO RADIOWAVE PULSES AND THE NUCLEI ABSORBS ENERGY FROM THEM. THE NUCLEI TOPPLE OUT OF ALIGNMENT WITH THE FIELD, BUT THEN LINE UP AGAIN AS THEY LOSE THE ABSORBED ENERGY. BY MEASURING THE SPECIFIC RADIO FREQUENCIES EMITTED BY THE NUCLEI, AND THE RATE AT WHICH REALIGNMENTS OCCURS, SCIENTISTS GAIN DETAILED INFORMATION ON THE ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND MOTION OF THE SAMPLE.

Balanced Calcium Formula To Deliver More Calcium
Are you taking the right kind of calcium supplement?
Are you sure that you are absorbing the calcium tablets you are taking?
With Nn Calcium Plus, you can be sure that you are getting the right form of calcium that allows maximum absorption for a lifetime of stronger bones.
Superior, balanced calcium formula with the essential nutrients, including Magnesium, Vitamin D, Manganese and Zinc, needed to optimise calcium absorption and utilisation in the body. Each easy-to-swallow tablet provides 1,050mg of Calcium citrate.
Vitamin D omproves calcium absorption in the intestines, directs calcium into the bones and suppresses the parathyroid hormones responsible for calcium loss from the bones. Manganese, on the other hand, accelerates the synthesis of mucopolysaccharides for bone matrix formation, while Zinc activates osteoblast (bone forming cells), and improves collagen and chondroitin synthesis for stronger joints. Most importantly, Magnesium ensures bones formed are more flexible and less brittle.
• No chalky taste
• Higher absorption - 2.5 times MORE bio-available than calcium carbonate*
• May be taken any time - even on an empty stomach
• Does not cause constipation or gas like conventional calcium tablets
*Based on research by University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, published in Journal of Clinical Pharmacology 1999 Nov; 39(11):1151-4
Are you absorbing your calcium supplements?
You may not be getting the most out of the calcium that you are taking if it is not in the correct form. Studies confirmed that Calcium citrate is more superior to most commercial calcium supplements. Even if you have insufficient stomach acid like most people, you would still be able to absorb 45% of Calcium citrate supplements, in comparison to only 4% of Calcium carbonate supplement. When calcium isn't absorbed into your bones, it collects in your joints causing bone spurs (a symptom of arthritis), in your kidneys causing kidney stones, or in your blood vessels causing clogged arteries.
How strong are your bones?
Calcium alone doesn't protect your bones! In fact, too much calcium without magnesium can lead to the formation of brittle bones that break easily. Magnesium makes the bones more flexible and less prone to breaking. A good example is to observe the difference between chalk and ivory. Blackboard chalk is calcium carbonate. It breaks wasily when you drop it. Ivory, on the other hand, is a combination of calcium and magnesium. It bounces back without breaking when it's dropped. Similary you'd want your bones to be like ivory and not chalk.
What Calcium Can Do For You?
• Builds strong bones & teeth
• Prevents osteoporosis
• Relieves muscle cramps & twitches
• Alleviates insomnia & sleeping problems
• Reduces high blood pressure (Hypertension)
• Alleviates Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
COFFEE DRINKERS - BEWARE!
You lose about 5mg of calcium with each cup of coffee you drink. Unless you are replenishing the lost calcium, you may risk losing your bones.

Batik Stamping
1. Prewash T-shirt to remove any finishes that may prevent absorption of dyes. Dry and iron if very wrinkled.
2. Cover table with plastic tablecloth.
3. Cut a rectangular piece of parchment paper about the size of the T-shirt and insert it between the layers of the T-shirt to prevent the resist and dyes from bleeding through to the backside. This paper remains inside the shirt through the entire dyeing and microwave process.
4. Place T-shirt on sheets of plastic wrap that have been overlapped so plastic is slightly larger than shirt.
5. Plan placement of batik stamped design. Fold T-shirt in half to find center. Mark center of neckline with a pin.
6. Pour a small amount of Batik-EZ resist on a paper plate. Using a small brush, apply resist to the daisy stamp. Wipe off excess resist from stamp with end of brush. Wipe on paper towel. Beginning at the neckline, press half of the daisy stamp in the center of the shirt (remove pin before stamping). Then continue stamping half daisies from the center to the shoulder seams.
7. Then randomly stamp whole daisies over the front of the shirt. Stamps can really be placed anywhere – down a sleeve or around the hemline. If you're stamping on the sleeve, be sure to cut a piece of parchment and insert in the sleeve to avoid resist bleeding to the back of the sleeve.
8. Let the Batik EZ resist dry or use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time.
The transmission spectrum here shows the broad absorption band at 550nm attributed to the Ca colloid but also the vibronic ripples below 500nm that is seen in some yellow fluorites coloured by the ozonide ion O_3^- (Bill, 1981). This is the first time that I have seen both colouring mechanisms operating in the same sample.
The regions of the sample that exhibit the ozonide absorption show also a strong red fluorescence under laser excitation around 405nm (see the next post). The transmission spectrum was obtained from the region marked with the mouseover box near the centre of the lower purple band.

These plots show the yellow fluorescence of a natural yellow/brown zircon. The image shows the stone illuminated by UV light around 370nm. The two spectra show the broad band emission when excited by 254nm Hg light (orange line) and by 365nm LED light (blue line, shifted up 10 units for clarity).
The thin grey lines show gaussian profiles, computed in photon energy space, fitted to the two spectra and plotted here in wavelength space (which makes an asymmetric profile broadened to the red). The fit parameters are shown on the plot ('Gauss_1' referring to the 254nm spectrum).
The fact that single gaussians fit so well supports the notion that this radiation-induced colour centre fluorescence is a single process acting within the crystal.
Such stones have been subject to accumulating radiation damage produced by neutrons and alpha particles emitted during the radiative decay of uranium and thorium impurities over hundreds of millions or even billions of years.
Note that this measurement can only be made with a flux-calibrated spectrometer having a well determined conversion from spectrometer counts to (relative) energy per unit wavelength.

A little self-awareness goes a really long way.
It’s totally different than self-absorption. I remember times where I directed way too much energy towards trying to craft some sort of image, to come across as a certain way, or to impress the right groups of people. It’s amazing how much time you can spend thinking about yourself without self-awareness.
Self-awarness takes honesty. Knowing your natural strengths, weaknesses, motivations, and tendencies can be such a difference-maker. The more I’ve understood these things about myself, the more I’ve understood the best ways for me to help people, things I should commit to that challenge me, and why the same event might trigger different reactions from me than other people I’m close to.
I’ve learned to embrace my adventurous side, while realizing that the things that grow me more are long term, patience-testing commitments. I’ve learned to appreciate the fact that I’m an inevitable optimist without expecting the same amount of belief from other people.
Everyone has their own path to growth, but it’s so much easier to commit to growth when you know your starting points.
This figure shows a full calculation of the mica fringe pattern using the methodology presented by R. Swanepoel, 1983, J. Phys. E: Sci. Instrum. 16, 1214. (orange line). The observed data are shown as the blue line (visible JAZ spectrum) and the blue x (NIR NIRQUEST spectrum - which does not resolve the fringes below about 1100nm).
In the calculation, the absorption coefficient (giving the imaginary part of the refractive index) has been determined from transmission measurements (green line) of a thicker (0.63 ± 0.02 mm) mica flake.
For simplicity, I have used a value for n (the real part of the refractive index) which is a linear function of wavelength. This is not a very good approximation and should really be replaced by a more appropriate functional form. However, the model is a respectable fit to the data.
The black dots show the interference order calculated by the simple geometrical formula for transmission maxima (no phase change of pi as in reflection) are given by:
2 n d cos(beta) = m Lambda_t
where n is the refractive index (using the same linear function), d is the mica thickness, beta is the angle of refraction (inside the mica) = zero in this case, m is the order of the interference and Lambda_t is the wavelength of maximum transmission.
In this plot, the order, m, runs from 10 to 62.
This has been an interesting exercise for me in classical optics modelling and is, of course, very relevant for problems such as 'fringing' in CCD imaging.

Local Government reorganisation in 1974 saw the absorption of the Darwen Corporation Transport undertaking into its larger neighbour and bringing with it a single-deck fleet largely composed of Bristol RE / East Lancs, a type common with some of its East Lancashire neighbours. The former number 1, which became Blackburn 173 in the 1977 renumbering, is seen in a later version of the livery with more brunswick green applied in favour of less white. A slightly hurried shot as it heads along Montague Street, Blackburn in this March 1981 view. It was withdrawn just over a year later and saw further use with a couple of independents until the end of the decade.

The twin role played by the skin – protection from excessive UV radiation and absorption of enough sunlight to trigger the production of vitamin D – means that people living in the lower latitudes, close to the Equator, with intense UV radiation, have developed darker skin to protect them from the damaging effects of UV radiation. In contrast, those living in the higher latitudes, closer to the Poles, have developed fair skin to maximize vitamin D production.

For the test film of the Jupiter-9 lens I mounted it on the Leningrad camera (see below for detail about the lens and the camera). The lens was fitted with a generic yellow filter (screw-on 49mm) and a generic cylindrical metal shade hood designed for a 50mm lens. By safety, a lens cap fitted on the hood (55mm) was also used to protect the shutter curtains from an accidental sun burning (I forgot twice to remove the cap before shooting...)
I loaded the Leningrad with a Rollei RPX 400 film exposed for 250 ISO to compensate the absorption of the yellow filter. The light metering was done using a Minolta Autometer III with the 10° viewer for selective metering privileging the shadows areas.
The viewer of the Leningrad has build-in frame for the 85mm and is fully compensated for the parallax error.

After completion, the film was rewound and processed using 350 mL of Adox Adonal (Agfa Rodinal) developer prepared at the dilution 1+25 for 12min15 at 20°C.
Digitizing was made using a Sony A7 camera (ILCE-7, 24MP) fitted to a Minolta Auto Bellows III with the Minolta slide duplication accessory and Minolta Macro Bellow lens 1:3.5 f=50mm. The diffuse light source was a LED panel CineStill Cine-lite.
The RAW files obtained were inverted within the latest version available of Adobe Lightroom Classic (version 14.2) and edited to the final jpeg pictures without intermediate file. They are presented either as printer files with a frame or the full size JPEG's together with some documentary smartphone color pictures.
About the camera :
After several months, my local repair shop gave up to repair my first exemplary of Leningrad camera. I got that GOMZ Leningrad for less than the price of the lens (50€) a year ago (February 24, 2024, flic.kr/s/aHBqjBftyP) at the monthly collector meeting in Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure, near Lyon, France. I looked then again for a working one.
Leningrad’s are fascinating Russian range-finder 35mm camera’s produced in Leningrad (USSR) / Saint-Petersburg, from 1956 to 1968 at about 76.000 units. It is not really a rare camera but appears only from time-to-time in the classical collector’s networks.
The Leningrad camera project was developed by GOMZ company (ГОМЗ, Государственный оптико-механический завод, Ленинград = Gosularstvennyi Optiko-Mekhanicheskii Zavod =State Optical-Mechanical Factory), Leningrad, USSR. The Leningrad ’s were constructed to a very high degree of precision and likely the most advanced rangefinder ever made at that time in Russia. At the 1958 World Exposition in Brussels, the Leningrad was awarded the "Grand Prix de Bruxelles”. Modified Leningrads were also used in the Soviet space program. In addition to a complex parallax-compensated multi-focal (for 3.5, 5, 8.5 and 13.5cm) collimated system, the camera has a built-in spring-powered mechanical motor for an automated film advance after each view taken. The Leningrad mounts the 39mm Leica-type thread lenses, especially of the Jupiter series of lens derived of classical Carl Zeiss lenses designed for the Contax (Biogon 3.5cm and Sonnar’s 5, 8.5 and 13.5cm).
In 1965, GOMZ became LOMO ( ЛОМО, Ленинградское oптико-механическое oбъединение (Leningradskoïe Optiko-Mekhanitcheskoïe Obiedinienie) that is still existing, producing instrumental optical devices (www.lomo.ru).
On eBay, I focused on a LOMO Leningrad year 1965 in working condition but without the original film plate. I got the camera for 130€ including the leather bag and a standard lens Jupiter-8 1:2 f=5cm. The seller adapted cleanly a different film plate that looked to work, but my idea was to use the camera back of my faulty Leningrad. This film plate may a precision glass plate special designed for optimum film transport and optical planarity. I received my new Leningrad on January 31, 2025 in good condition.
After a very careful inspection and a detailled cleaning, I decided to make a test film using a FOMAPAN 200 black-and-white film. On the Leningrad it is said that there is absolutely no way to check the correct film advance during the shooting session. The rewind should not be up since the mechanical forces induced would be too high for the spring-powered spooling barrel. The film should be also in a quality not too tight film cartridge and should be checked before use. This stressful machine should be manipulated with maximum care when not familiar with it.
About the lens Jupiter-9:
New in my collection in Feb. 2025, this very popular lens Jupiter-9 1:2.8 f=85mm for my Zorki’s and Leningrad camera’s. The lens was produced in 1978 by the LZOS company (Лыткаринский завод Оптического Стекла , Lytkarino Zavod Optychisovo Sticklo) located in Lytkarino (about 100 km Noth to Moscow).
I sourced a clean exemplary in Germany at regular price given the popularity of the Jupiter-9 (170€) with the Leica 39mm thread mount, front and rear caps plus the lens black storage canister. The lens is popular especially among videographers due to its peculiar bokeh and perfectly round shaped diaphragm made of 15 blades.
Originally, the Jupiter 9 is based on the design of the Carl Zeiss Sonnar designed for the Zeiss Ikon Contax in the years 1930’s. Production began in USSR in 1948, when the lens was initially called the ЗК-85 (Sonnar Kransogorsk) and it was assembled using mostly German parts in Contax/Kiev mount. The lens was also adapted to Zorki (M39) mount to fit the Zorki cameras early in production It appears, for both Zorki and Kiev mount, in a 1949 catalogue. By 1951 the name changes to Jupiter 9 (Юпитер-9). The lens has seven glass elements in three groups; a single glass at the front, and two cemented groups of three. All versions of the lens are coated. It was made by the KMZ (Красногорский механический завод, Krasnogorski Mekhanicheskii Zavod) and LZOS factories, in Leica 39 mm thread mount for Fed and Zorki rangefinders, but originally it was a Contax bayonet used in Kiev cameras. Jupiter-9 lenses were also made at the Arsenal factory in Ukraine, for Kiev rangefinders, but initially released as KMZ. It was later adapted for M42-mount Zenit SLR cameras, with an M24×1 thread mount.
