Never mind the Shopping weather.

.

An immense hall, high above the head of the huge glass roof. It lets daylight play with the light. Large terraces on both sides let people experience as if they were outside. There is even a merry-go-round, perhaps symbolic of this form of shelter and amenities for the vast numbers of people who have only one place to shop and shop now that all the small shops and businesses have succumbed to this commercial mass production.

The overall architecture is inspired by 19th century Parisian architecture by Gustave Eiffel, Victor Baltard, and Baron Haussmann.

The mall was divided into four themed areas. This one, "Les Halles", with glass and metal constructions of Baltard. The "Passage Parisiens" were reminiscent of the shopping arcades of the 19th century. Also "Le Promenade", inspired by the Musée d'Orsay station and the Parisian boulevards. And "Les Terrasses", which offer a lush setting with vegetation and a fountain that evolve in a case of glass and cast iron. It hosts the food court, the first in France to be built as an American-style food court.

Foie Gras Groliere, one of the many shops that sell this delicacy. It's also one of the most important culinairy symbols of this region.

Foie gras - French for '"fat liver"'), is a specialty food product made of the liver of a duck or goose fattened by gavage (force feeding). A popular and well-known delicacy in French cuisine. Its flavor is described as rich, buttery, and delicate, unlike that of an ordinary duck or goose liver. Foie gras is sold whole, or is prepared into mousse, parfait, or pâté, and may also be served as an accompaniment to another food item, such as steak.

Gavage - the technique of gavage dates as far back as 2500 BC, when the ancient Egyptians began keeping birds for food and deliberately fattened the birds through force-feeding. Today, France is by far the largest producer and consumer of foie gras. Gavage-based foie gras production is controversial, due mainly to the animal welfare concerns about force-feeding, intensive housing and husbandry, and enlarging the liver to 10 times its usual volume.

Pays de Belves - The village Pays-de-Belvès used to be called Belvès, it's fortified in the Middle Ages because of its strategic position and came to be known as the "Pope’s city" as it was under Clement V protection. Belvès still bears witness to a tormented past with fortified walls, a castrum (fortified camp), an 11th century auditeur’s tower, 14th-15th century castle and belfry, city hall tower, covered market, hotel with a Renaissance façade and even some ancient troglodyte dwellings. It has been designated as one of the most beautiful towns in France with impressive panoramic views on top of a hill, enough reason to be member of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France".

A beautiful quiet waterfall that offers visitors a refreshing view on the water, especially during the summer period, but sometimes also a shower.

That has been different in history when the gorge was created. The dawn of the Quaternary period had large-scale glaciation, transforming water pockets and lakes into rivers of ice, which remodeled the topography, scouring and striating the landscape. At the end of this activity, erosion by rivers continued, forming the Gorge as it is today. The Verdon's riverbed was scoured for a second time of the accumulated coral and limestone sediments, by a staggering water delivery rate nearing 2000 to 3000 cubic meters per second.

Gorges du Verdon - Cascade Saint Maurin

Gorges du Verdon - the Verdon Gorge is a river canyon located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of Southeastern France. It is about 25 km (15.5 mi) long and up to 700 meters (0.4 mi) deep. It was formed by the Verdon River, which is named for its turquoise-green color, one of the location's distinguishing characteristics. In between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the river has cut a ravine through the limestone mass. At the end of the canyon, the Verdon flows into the artificial Lake of Sainte-Croix.

The gorge is very popular with tourists, who can drive around its rim, rent kayaks to travel on the river, or hike. The limestone walls, which are several hundreds of meters high, attract many rock climbers. It is considered an outstanding destination for multi-pitch climbing. The Gorge has been compared to the Grand Canyon in the United States.

The charcoal drawings in the Fluweelengrot in Valkenburg are a unique collection of works of art that give the cave a special appearance. The drawings were made by a number of different artists, including Anton ten Berghe, Frans De Vries and Jean-Baptiste Coclers in the period from 1885 to 1930 in a realistic style and often show scenes from the history of Valkenburg. There are charcoal drawings on display of the castle ruins of Valkenburg, the Sint-Pietersberg and the Geul. In the smaller cave, also called the Gemeentegrot, the drawings are smaller, but still very beautiful. There are also various sculptures, carved into the marl of the cave, a soft stone that is common in Limburg. They often depict animals, people and religious figures.

Valkenburg: Art

The Fluweelengrot Christmas Market in Valkenburg is one of the most popular Christmas markets in the Netherlands. The market is held in the Fluweelengrot, an ancient cave beneath the castle ruins of Valkenburg and beautifully decorated with Christmas lights and decorations. There are more than 50 stalls with Christmas items, such as Christmas presents, decorations and treats. There is also a Christmas tavern where you can enjoy mulled wine or Glühwein.

The Fluweelengrot Christmas Market is a unique experience. The atmosphere in the cave is magical. There is something for everyone, from traditional Christmas items to modern gadgets.

The Valkenburg Christmas Market is a very popular and busy event during the december month. With Christmas markets inside in the former marl quarry caves of the Fluweelgrot and the Gemeentegrot. But also outside with the many catering establishments with heated terraces in the old fully decorated city center of Valkenburg.

Sarlat-la-Caneda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.

At home we seperate our waste using four type of bins. Our car is loading solar generated energy and we also try to use a little amount of energy as we can. My whole town generates a less amount of polution in a single day then these two airplanes, of many others passing that day, in a single flight. It's not surprising that all environmental measures aimed at consumers clash with the reality above and around us. We still have a long way to go...
