Hellevoetsluis - During the time of the United Provinces Hellevoetsluis was the naval port of the Admiralty of de Maze (Rotterdam) and could accommodate an entire fleet within a special land-enclosed fortress with harbour and dockyard facilities, accessible through a canal. Thanks to its strategic situation the town grew from the beginning of the 17th century to be the homeport for the Dutch war fleet. In later years the port was fortified more and more and Hellevoetsluis therefore became a unique combination of fortified town and naval port. The Admirals Maarten Tromp, Michiel de Ruyter and Piet Heyn had their home base here and in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution William III of Orange's invasion fleet departed from the port.

Some of the inlets are below the waterline, one of the most famous begins 30 meters below the sea surface at the cliff and after a very long dive through a cave there's a huge cave.

The Calanque de Morgiou in Marseille is known for this underwater entrance that leads to the Cosquer Cave first, explored in 1991. It's the only known underwater cave with prehistoric paintings which date back to two distinct periods during the Upper Paleolithic. The first phase, from around 27,000 years BP (the Gravettian Era), is represented by art consisting of 65 hand stencils in black and red. Art from the more recent period dates to 19,000 years BP (the Solutrean Era) showing more complex drawnings including various animals just like those found at the world famous caves of Lascaux.

In Marseille a replica of this cave has been constructed, a unique darkride tour to show visitors a nice impression of these underwater caves. The original caves are preserved, very hard to reach, permitted to only a vey few experienced divers.

Terracotta Army - L'Armée Terracotta

Exhibition "L'armée Terracotta - l'héritage de l'empereur chinois éternel". It shows items part of one of the greatest discoveries of the last century, the terracotta army discovered in 1974, dated about 2,200 years ago, then ancient China of the first Chinese emperor.

The 8,000 terracotta soldiers were a burial gift for Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di (259 -210 BC). The archaeological site, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, encompasses a stunning 98 square kilometers (38 square miles). As many as 700,000 conscripted workers have worked on the project to recreate the army of the Chinese emperor in terracotta, that is more than have worked on the pyramid of Cheops. Some time after the burial the collection was destroyed and weapons stolen by a rival emperor. The exhibition shows realistic replicas and unfortunately not the originals because they are too fragile to transport.

Droogdok Jan Blanken - the Dry dock Jan Blanken is a national monument built for the Dutch navy between 1798 and 1822 (architect Jan Blanken) in Hellevoetsluis for the construction and maintenance of ships. Equipped with new techniques such as a pump house (rebuilt in 2001, now a restaurant) with a James Watt steam engine and hundreds of piles were driven into the ground for the dock foundation. The dock has a ship door (type of lock, French invention), and devided in a maintenance and construction section, the walls of which are constructed as an amphitheater to facilitate easy ship maintenance. The naval frigate Euridice was the first ship to be docked.

Historyland

Historyland, a unique historical theme park and museum in Hellevoetsluis. One with a high educational value. Many themes, from prehistory to the recent past that belong to history, are exhibited here. Mostly life-sized models or even real objects comprise the ever-growing collection. Often with an educational character in which you can even participate actively, such as participating in paleontological excavations or prospecting for gold, make this theme park particularly suitable as a learning environment. The park and a number of buildings offer enough subjects for a nice day with lots of fun but also an educational day.

It's so nice to browse through the various brocante stalls, you never know what you might find. There might be something waiting for you to happen. It all started when I found a small, rusty key at a brocante stall. The vendor, a man with a magnificent mustache, swore it unlocked the secret hidden in a old chest somewhere in this village. I bought it, naturally. I spent weeks trying to find that chest, until I finally realized it was a sardine can key from 1957. But hey, at least I had a great story, and a new mission: to find the matching can.

Monpazier: Event Photography

The brocante market in Monpazier is a celebrated event for lovers of antiques and vintage finds. Set in the heart of one of France's most beautiful bastide towns, the market takes place within the historic arcades of the main square (Place des Cornières).

It's a professional flea market where numerous dealers showcase high-quality items, ranging from antique furniture and old linens to porcelain, jewelry, and unique decorative objects. While Monpazier has a regular weekly food market every Thursday, the brocante is a specific event, with dates typically held on certain weekends throughout the year, especially during the warmer months. It's the perfect place to hunt for treasures while soaking in the medieval atmosphere.

Sarlat-la-Caneda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.
