Victoms siege Tuileries Palace.

.

On August 10, 1792, forty-seven of the forty-eight Parisian sections, supplemented by the Breton and Marseille federations, laid siege to the Tuileries Palace, forcing the royal family to withdraw and place itself under the protection of the Assemblée législative.

At eight o'clock in the morning the fighting started and the Swiss bodyguard of the king opened fire. Early in the morning, Louis XVI went into the garden to encourage the National Guard. He then took refuge, together with the royal family, in the chamber of the Assemblée législative in the Salle du Manège. At ten o'clock the king ordered the Swiss Guards to cease firing, thereby signing their death warrant. It turned out to be the bloodiest day in the French Revolution.

All rooms and closets were searched. The unfortunates who hid there were thrown out of the windows. More than a hundred servants of the king met the same fate. Some had hidden in the chimney stacks. The kitchens and cellars of the palace were visited. The drunken crowd danced around the fires in the courtyards. By noon the battle was over.

Mayor Pétion of Paris also allowed himself to be taken prisoner. Napoleon Bonaparte was also among the spectators. The protection of the Assembly proved worthless: the king and his family were imprisoned in the Temple by the Commune, with an excuse: "for their safety". In order to calmly get the family to the Temple, they were cunningly told that they would stay in the city palace there. It became the gloomy dungeon..

Catacombes de Paris - Tour

The Catacombs of Paris is the largest collection of underground cemeteries in the world, containing the bones of approximately six million Parisians in underground burial chambers and galleries.

Underground in Paris is a nearly 300 km long network of quarry tunnels used for the building blocks of many Parisian buildings and monuments such as Notre Dame. Because the Parisian cemeteries were overcrowded and very unclean, it was decided to close the cemeteries and move the bones to the underground passages.

It would take two years to empty the majority of Paris's cemeteries. Beginning from an opening ceremony on 7 April 1785 with nightly processions of black cloth-covered wagons carrying the millions of Parisian dead. The property itself was transformed into a sort of museum for all the headstones, sculptures and other artifacts recuperated from the former cemetery. The human remains were dumped into empty chambers and covered with a neatly stacked wall of skulls and bones. Plaques indicate which cemetery the bones come from. Until well into the 19th century, the Catacombs of Paris remained in use for the storage of bones.

Today, about half a million visit a 1.7 km section of the tunnels. It is a former quarry from the 15th century containing the graves of up to the 18th century. After a descent of 25 meters of stairs, a walk takes the visitor past one of the catacombs where the stacked bones and skulls lie, arranged by cemetery where the bones come from and the year they were deposited in the catacombs or by events in the Parisian history.

Capture of Brielle

April 1st, 1572 - the capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen. A turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was poorly defended by the Spanish, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.

The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison led by the Spanish "Iron" Duke of Alva protagonists was poorly defended. On the evening of April 1 in 1572, the 600 men sacked the port, rammed the city gates, defeated the Spanish soldiers and liberated Brielle as the first Dutch city in the Netherlands from de Spanish .

Nowadays a very popular annual UNESCO event with lots of Watergeuzen, Spanish soldiers and medieval dressed people in a city center all dressed up just like then on that historical day.

Artwork Cornucopia - Hoorn des Overvloeds - the interior of the Markthal is covered with a 11,000 m² (two football fields) large artwork by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, entitled "Hoorn des Overvloeds". This title refers to the Cornucopia, a horn of Latin mythology which symbolizes abundance and saturation.

The artwork shows strongly enlarged fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects. It was made using digital 3D-techniques, printed on 4000 perforated aluminum panels and covers the ceiling of the hall. Some now call it "The largest artwork in the world" or "The Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam".

Haar or sea fret along the dunes. Haar is typically formed over the sea and is blown to the land by the wind. This commonly occurs when warmer moist air moves over the relatively cooler North Sea causing the moisture in the air to condense, forming haar.

The Man in the Iron Mask is a 1998 American action drama film directed, produced, and written by Randall Wallace, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio in a dual role as the title character and villain, Jeremy Irons as Aramis, John Malkovich as Athos, Gerard Depardieu as Porthos, and Gabriel Byrne as D'Artagnan.

For this movie production Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is the stand in for all the scenes that are supposed to be Versailles, although in the book, the switch between Louis and Philippe happens at Vaux-le-Vicomte the prototype for Versaille. In some film versions, the switch takes place at a real and actual event the "fête de Vaux" (17 August 1661), a famous party for the unveiling of the new château. The party was attended by Louis XlV, who realized that the king's own palace was seen as inferior to the new château of his non-royal finance minister. The famous fête led to the downfall of Fouquet and the building of Versailles.

Details

Vaux-le-Vicomte (Est.1658) - a baroque French château on a 33 hectares (100 acres) estate with formal gardens along a three-kilometer axis. Built between 1658 to 1661 as a symbol of power and influence and intended to reflect the grandeur of Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis de Belle Île, Viscount of Melun and Vaux, the superintendent of finances of Louis XIV.

The château was an influential work of architecture in mid-17th-century Europe. The architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André le Nôtre, and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun worked together on this large-scale project. This marked the beginning of the "Louis XIV style" combining architecture, interior design and landscape design. Their next following project was to build Versailles.

Design scetch Joris en de Draak.

Drawing "Diorama" by Anton Pieck, many of the designs in the Efteling are by his hand. A unique design with its own colours. This original Efteling drawing (1971) by Anton Pieck, parts and details from it are easily recognizable in the Diorama or elsewhere in the park.

A very detailed drawing of a dragon's head for the "Joris en de Draak" attraction, the actual version is slightly less scary but still fire-breathing.

Efteling Museum - opened in 2003 on the renovated and expanded Anton Pieckplein. The museum houses old ornaments, statues and attributes of the park. Our adventures are designed to give you the feeling of having lived, even for a short while, during our country's pioneer days." In short, some very nice building and scene designs.

I has a train station, town square, movie theater, city hall, firehouse with a steam-powered pump engine, emporium, shops, some restaurants, arcades, a double-decker bus, horse-drawn streetcar, and jitneys.

In architecture inspired by Walt Disney's hometown of Marceline, Missouri (as in the film Lady and the Tramp).
