Syringa (Lilac) is a genus of about 20–25 species of flowering plants in the olive family (Oleaceae), is native to Europe and Asia.

The usual flower colour is a shade of purple (often a light purple or lilac), but white and pale pink are also found. T

The flowers grow in large panicles, and in several species have a strong fragrance.

This was singing to me about le temps des lilas, Spring and fresh green...?

This columbine cultivar is perennial that features large, upward facing, fragrant, bright bi-toned flowers with outward curving spurs.

Flowers grow on a long stem above the leaves and have five pointed sepals and five petals with long spurs projecting backwards between the sepals.

Aquilegia comes from the Latin word for eagle in reference to the flower's five spurs which purportedly resemble an eagle's talon.

The plant's seeds and roots are highly poisonous however, and contain cardiogenic toxins which cause both severe gastroenteritis and heart palpitations if consumed as food.

Native Americans used very small amounts of Aquilegia root as a treatment for ulcers.

However, the medical use of this plant is better avoided due to its high toxicity; columbine poisonings may be fatal.

It is ALWAYS better to wash your hands thoroughly, after handling flowers!

When I no longer feel the thrill to the first snow of the season, I'll know I'm growing old.

Unaware, in our cosy Victorian home... I woke up and I sensed that, although the curtains were closed and it was still dark... how the 'light' had changed and there was the unmistakable silence that comes with snow... looked out and saw the wonderland, I'm sure my eyes grew bigger, I know my heart jumped and beat faster.

I squealed with joy and wonder at all this beauty...

I ran upstairs for my camera.

By that time, the night receding, morning started to break, the traffic slowly started, some cars ventured out, people slip-sliding down to work.

The snow stopped falling for awhile, the silence still deafening.

In this image I love the 'chaud-froid' the coldness from the night and the warmth from the Low pressure sodium (LPS) lamps, also known as sodium oxide (SOX) lamps.

Today it is almost all gone, but a memory and a few images... the goal of photography, to safe-keep them!!!

I handheld my camera, very low shutter-speed, steadying against the wall and yes I have very steady hands!

Focus... take a deep breath... hold still... take the image, breathe out! DONE

We live in the Victorian Quarter! Lovely!

I've painted for as long as I can remember.

I believe if you are a creative it is NEVER just in one field...

I photographed one of my paintings, 60x50, and inserted it; I was so surprised when it actually matched the colours on my palette!

I painted it from memory, a tour of Bretagne.

I had been most impressed with the rough rocky coasts, the often emerald waters, the ‘wildness’ of the place.

Some of the brushes I used belonged to my grandfather and father.

The painting is actually done completely with pallet-knife, my fave tool.

I painted with oils like this here, watercolours but I made hundreds of soft pastels.

I don't paint anymore now; I might again, one day, who knows?

My most creative period was when I had a lot of turmoil in my life, anger, sadness, disappointment and love.

I painted furiously day and night!

When that was gone, the photography kicked in again ad eventually took over.

I believe you have to be in a specific ‘state of mind’, plus, I must admit that over the years photography has satisfied my creative needs more and more.

PERMEKE'S PALETTE

Constant Permeke (1886 - 1952)

Biography: Born in Antwerp. Belgium.

Died Ostend.

Constant Permeke was a leading Expressionist painter in his home country during the period between World War I and World War II.

In 1914, he was severely injured and sent to England for recovery. Permeke returned to Belgium five years later, eventually building a home and studio in Jabbeke. His paintings normally depicted the aspects of life in a coastal town and portraits of fisherman.

He was a contemporary of Picasso.

After 1935, Permeke began creating sculpture as well.

Permeke's work was an extension of his personality. A giant, he worked in large studios on large canvases; even his drawings are large. His character was uncouth and quick-tempered yet gentle and generous.

He was direct and single-minded.

When he built his house in Jabbeke, just outside Bruges, it was very avant-garde.

It is now a permanent museum for his work.

On a visit, in his beautiful studio (atelier), the family have left it untouched, the huge unfinished painting on the easel; I photographed his palette with brushes, preserved in a glass tabletop display.

With all the reflections not the easiest photo to take, I included a small photo of one of his paintings, for those who are not familiar with his work.

Sitting on a low wall, waiting on Sunday noon, King’s Cross Station in London, it was stifling hot.

Instead of being bored and impatient, I decided to pass the time being 'creative'...

I noticed all the people hurrying by and especially that EVERYBODY was lugging bags, lots of bags, of all types, big, small, colours and designs. Spotted, striped, classic, coloured.

I wondered, what were they all transporting? Can we not go anywhere without our ‘wheeled’ carriers? Often not one but more, backpacks, plastic, leather, designed, handbags, so many. All different, just like the people, their shoes, legs and leg wear!

I saw people traveling alone, in pairs, in group, I saw them smile, I saw them laugh, I saw some cry, I saw some depressed and some tired, people of all walks of life.

I became smilingly fascinated and eventually left feeling a great sense of joy because of this series.

I feel so biased, I like them ALL!

This was a bit naughty of me, but aahh well, we all should have a sense of humour... keeps one healthy?

Smuggler's Cove in Flamborough, one of our favourite haunts.

Magical place and wonderful people, their catch, mainly crabs and are beyond words.

They also catch lobsters... they go straight to the Continent...

During the week, these fisher folk are working from very early morning, on Sunday, they take people around the surrounding bays, and to view the cliffs like the famous Bempton Cliffs, with all their natural (bird) wildlife, some take people fishing.

Here the skipper eased his boat in with confidence, funny how they spot a lens aimed at them so quickly..

Mind your head!

The restaurant of the Dunkirk to Dover

Obviously, we have spent plenty of time on different ferries, you could forget that Britain is an island.

There are now less and less of them!

It is getting more complicated and difficult to get to Belgium.

We love sailing on those floating hotels.

Taken in one of the 'restaurants', I put my camera on the table having left my tripod in the car...

The atmosphere has a holiday feel, people are relaxing and enjoying,

In FRANCE: Jeux de boules. Boules is a collective name for a wide range of games similar to bowls and bocce in which the objective is to throw or roll heavy balls as close as possible to a small target ball, called the jack in English.

As early as the 6th century BC the ancient Greeks are recorded to have played a game of tossing coins, then flat stones, and later stone balls, called spheristics, trying to have them go as far as possible.

The ancient Romans modified the game by adding a target that had to be approached as closely as possible.

This Roman variation was brought to Provence by Roman soldiers and sailors.

A Roman sepulchre in Florence shows people playing this game, stooping down to measure the points.

After the Romans, the stone balls were replaced by wooden balls.

In the Middle Ages, Erasmus referred to the game as globurum in Latin, but it became commonly known as boules (i.e. 'balls'), and it was played throughout Europe.

Both games are played by the 2 sexes, I think though more men!

In Summer it is great to hear the clanking of the balls, somewhat different, but still.

It is taken very seriously!, and I love the lively discussion that can erupt!

Overall both are very leisurely.

A sheep in its first year is a lamb and its meat is also lamb, a pale pink.

A sheep in its second year and its meat are hogget and darker.

Older sheep meat is mutton and very dark.

Generally, "hogget" and "sheep meat" are not used by consumers outside New Zealand and Australia, only the industry.

I am a pescatarian!

The tables and chairs are empty, the beach reclaimed by the seagulls and the sea by the local fishermen.

Gone are the sun worshipers, the children's laughter.

The sailing boats safely tucked away for winter.

Only working boats now, men out there, on the wide open waters earning their living.

That day was a calm day... with a kind of melancholy.

The Christmas party was in full swing, the house full of laughter.

The ladies in their colourful and sparkling dresses, looking gorgeous, the gents smart and preened... many of them swaying to the tune of the sweet music.

Lights and flickering candle-flames spreading a lovely glow.

The smell of good food was tickling the nostrils, yes a very merry atmosphere.

The weather was awful, sleety snow battering and drumming on the windows, but nobody seemed to notice, I was overlooking the pleasant scene when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a red blur, I looked, no... nothing there.

A little later, I was sure I saw it again, nudged a little closer to the window, and yes, there he was, Santa, shushing me, I rushed into the hall snatched a hat and coat and hurried outside.

'Sssssssssshhhhhhhhhh, I'm over here, quiet please?'

I could see his reindeer snuffling for some grass under the white layer.

'These are busy times for me, as you know, I came across your house and I could not help looking in, it looked so inviting I couldn't stop myself and have a look through the window, ooh, I do love to see people so happy, are you enjoying it?'

I blushed, or was it the wind that coloured my cheeks?

'Euhh, well yes, Santa, but I must confess, I'm not really here to feast and this is not my house, I am here to work, I am a photographer...'

He stroked his beard: 'Aha, I see... and do you like what you are doing?'

I shrugged and smiled: 'Yes and no, I love photography, but this here is work, earning a living, and no, not my favourite, you see, I think I am too shy really for it, each time I have to overcome a barrier, I mean, the clients cannot see my nerves, he?'

He clasped my hands in his: 'Hohoho, you make me laugh with your honesty! Sssshhh, between you and me, that sometimes happens to me too, I can also be nervous! Tell me what is your dream?'

I sighed deeply and looked at him: 'My dream would be to just be a creative photographer, I have so many ideas, not enough time, aaah, yes, to photograph when I like and what I like...'

He stroked his beard again and seemed thoughtful : 'That is quite a wish! In this day and age, mot easy, hhhmmm.

Well, my dear, it was great meeting you, I have to be on my way again, I wish you all the best and remember SSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHH, don't tell ANYONE you've seen me!!!'

He offered me a branch of festive Holly, waved good-bye.

I heard the sleigh-bells disappear into the dark of night, quickly silenced by the snow, gone... and me, also back to work again.

This was a few years ago now, and I got my wish!

I live the photographer's dream!

An EYE-TEASER?

It was in the Musee des Beaux Arts in Brussels, a room was built by an artist, Lucas Samaras’ Mirrored Room, the ceiling and floor plus two walls were mirrored, two walls had painted stripes and light-strips.

Not easy to photograph.

ART+VERTIGO= ARTIGO, tee hee, you really had the feeling of vertigo in this special piece of Art.

AAAHHH, puzzling images, eye-teasers...love'm, BRAVO to those who figured 'some' of it out? Lol, (~_*)

WHEN THE COTTON IS RIPE... by magda indigo

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fibre that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae.

The fibre is almost pure cellulose. Under natural conditions, the cotton bolls will increase the dispersal of the seeds.

Within 80–100 days after planting, the plant develops white blossoms, which change to a reddish colour.

The fertilised blossoms fall off after a few days and are replaced by small green triangular pods, called bolls, that mature after a period of 55–80 days.

During this period the seeds and their attached hairs develop within the boll, which increases considerably in size.

The seed hair, or cotton fibre, reaching a maximum length of about 6 cm (2.5 inches) in long-fibre varieties, is known as lint.

When ripe, the boll bursts into a white, fluffy ball...

BACK IN TIME in SOUTHERN ISRAEL... by magda indigo

In the Negev Desert, which is a stone desert in Southern Israel, you have a part, with different coloured canyons, the Pink canyon, the Red canyon, the White canyon, some of them in Timna, where you also find the ruins of the place where King Solomon had his copper mines.

It is an awesome place, hot and silent, with some of the strangest rock-formations I ever photographed.

It was quite a climb down, with all our equipment, it was out of season, we were by ourselves and one evening, the sun, as usual, dropped down quickly, taking with it the warmth, we had waited for the sweet light and on our return almost got lost.

It is a fabulous environment, bright light and deep shadows, again what hits me is the absolute silence, the beauty and the sense of the deeper you go, the more you go back in time, a feeling of eternity came over me...

From jagged, dark granite to the softer coloured sandstone and limestone, these distinctions offer a delightful picture of the desert terrain.

Japanese old wooden houses.

We visited the whole neighbourhood, BEAUTIFUL!!!

Machiya are traditional wooden townhouses found throughout Japan.

This here is in Kanazawa.

Machiya or townhouses and nōka (farm dwellings) constitute the two categories of Japanese vernacular architecture known as minka (folk dwellings).

Machiya originated as early as the Heian period and continued to develop through to the Edo period and even into the Meiji period.

Machiya housed urban merchants and craftsmen, a class collectively referred to as chōnin (townspeople).

This is the result of having 2 professional ballet dancers in the studio, who are up for a challenge and something different.

How do you capture their graceful, often powerful movements and action in such a static medium?

These two are super-toned performers.

Not all from my garden, most from my travels.

All the plants had a name tag... except this one!

Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

In most species the flowers are white, but in some species (notably H. macrophylla), they are blue, red, pink, light purple, or dark purple.

In these species the colour is affected by the presence of aluminium ions which are available or tied up depending upon the soil’s pH content.

For H. macrophylla and H. serrata cultivars, the flower colour can be determined by the relative acidity of the soil: an acidic soil (pH below 7), will have available aluminium ions and typically produce flowers that are blue to purple, whereas an alkaline soil (pH above 7) will tie up aluminium ions and result in pink or red flowers.

DNA profiling was developed in 1984 by British geneticist Sir Alec Jeffreys.

Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule composed of two polynucleotide chains that coil around each other.

DNA was first isolated by the Swiss physician Friedrich Miescher in 1869.

DNA contains the genetic information that allows all forms of life to function, grow and reproduce.

Forensic scientists can use DNA in blood, semen, skin, saliva or hair found at a crime scene to identify a matching DNA of an individual, such as a perpetrator.

This process is formally termed DNA profiling, also called DNA fingerprinting.

Syringa (Lilac) is a genus of about 20–25 species of flowering plants in the olive family (Oleaceae), is native to Europe and Asia.

The usual flower colour is a shade of purple (often a light purple or lilac), but white and pale pink are also found. T

The flowers grow in large panicles, and in several species have a strong fragrance.

After the ceremony, I set them up like this, when I looked behind me there were a whole row of people waiting to take the same photo on their phone.

Strawberries are at their best in Summer!

The garden strawberry was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s via a cross of Fragaria virginiana from eastern North America and Fragaria chiloensis, which was brought from Chile by Amédée-François Frézier in 1714.

Cultivars of Fragaria × ananassa have replaced, in commercial production, the woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca), which was the first strawberry species cultivated in the early 17th century.

The strawberry is not, from a botanical point of view, a berry.

Technically, it is an aggregate accessory fruit, meaning that the fleshy part is derived not from the plant's ovaries but from the receptacle that holds the ovaries.

Each apparent "seed" (achene) on the outside of the fruit is actually one of the ovaries of the flower, with a seed inside it.

The entire strawberry plant was used to treat depressive illnesses.

In 2017, world production of strawberries was 9.2 million tonnes, led by China with 40% of the total.

The chilli is the fruit of the Capsicum.

HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY.

The beautiful North-Yorkshire Dales.

Often at the bottom you will find a stream, could be small like this one or quite wide!

We had some spring rain and now everything looks so fresh with young green.

The Dales are laced with loose-stone walls.

How Green Was My Valley is a 1939 novel by Richard Llewellyn.

I ADORE and admire trees, their strength but also their flexibility.... I wonder if I was a tree in a previous life, lOLOLOL

I love browsing in Art-shops, the fragrance, the colours, EVERYTHING!

From when I could walk and since my father also painted, there were frequent visits...

That and books.

BIG FAVES where the colouring pencils that when you went over it with a wet painting brush, it became like a water-colour.

Just some more fun with pencils/props and lights in the studio, always the same... one idea sparks off another... I love being a creative, it is the spice of (my) life.

I cannot imagine 'not' having it...

I used recycled pencils for this image.

I cannot resist the, spotted a funky rubber to go with them, made the composition in my head, right there!

So colourful and attractive?

The child in me.

I still LOVE to write in pencil, it brings out my best handwriting!

The horse-breeder with his boxer dog, in good times and bad times.

Emiel had an accident, hand in the table saw.

His faithful dog like sensed the pain of his master and wanted to comfort him.

It mended well and a few months later, things were back to normal, however that bond stayed.

So many opportunities at the horse breeder.

Working boats come in and fishing boats fare out, shrimping and fishing by night.

It is our last night of our holiday in Ostend, Flanders/Belgium.

We visit a favourite place again, the old pier, the evening light is gorgeous, brightening the whites and saturating the colours.

Most people have gone home, the sea-breeze is cold, the fragrance wonderful, as is the silence except for the gulls' scratch now and then.
