I love trees in ALL seasons, here they are skeletal.

It is early October and we are in Scotland, so the weather is ‘Scottish’
which means, some sun, racing clouds, fast showers, lots of light play on the hills and oooh interesting light.

As we are high up, we are closer to the sky, so; often the top of the hills are covered in eerie wisps of white cloud.

Like a lover’s caress.

The weather doesn’t bother us, we take it as it comes, everything has its charms and moods.

When in The Highlands, you just have to see it with mist and rain.

We stand on the shore of Loch Lubnaig, standing silent, stunned by such beauty, which changes by the second! I capture the rain.

The same in Yorkshire, with the many Majestic old trees

ONE IN FLANDERS... Guess?

This is again how it came out of my camera!

I’m a ‘purist’, lol

Have a beautiful day and thank you for your comments, M, (*_*)

My youngest son, from when he was a little boy had a huge interest in trucks, when I came back from the States and Canada, I always knew what to bring him, magazines on those monster trucks, beautifully painted and maintained, the centrefolds all ended up on his bedroom walls.

He studied, had a very good job, when he called me to say he was taking all the exams that would fullfil his dream. He quit the job and became a truck driver! For a number of years he drove International and mostly Arctic.

One of his routes was the UK, he’d call me out of the blue, I’d pack and go, once we did 6 countries in one go, England/Belgium/Holland/Germany/Denmark/Sweden. Let’s not glamourize it, it’s not the scenic beauty of the countries that you take in, but motorway, not the most exciting, it is monotonous, you fly past all the wonderful names, and if you’re lucky sometimes you’ll see a glimmer in the distance.

It’s tough, stressful, under constant time pressure. The truck becomes your home for a week, except for the ferry crossings (on ferries they have their own quarters, restaurants, relaxing areas and sleeping cabins with shower, you'd BETTER be QUIET in those passages!

We had some wonderful times and adventures, great memories, lots of stories, all written....

Now he is married, they have a little girl. He’s given up THE life

He drives a huge Mercedes with a trailer=a deep-loader to transport very heavy loads, like huge cranes and giant bulldozers.

This is the highest truck I was ever in, very comfortable, especially for the driver, a special hydraulic seat, airco, great music and communication console.

All the mirrors are NOT luxury or bling!

They have to be in constant contact with base, because things change often by the minute.

I'll always be grateful for our 'trips' together, they were great times, he is a very responsible driver and I am proud of him!.

I discovered a 'hidden' world, around service stations, ports, parkings, we fly past them, but they are there... waiting, eating, resting, sleeping, doing their paper-work, looking up routes and addresses, phoning home... Everything in our world at some point was hauled in one of those trucks by one of those people!

They work hard for a living, but it’s a world within ours, almost a community.

And it is NOT glamorous at all, often boring, motorways in countries are all pretty much the same!

Look around you, in your home, anywhere, think of your food
what, at some point in time was not on the road, being transported in a truck?

I wish you a super day and thank you for your visit, M, (*_*)

#AbFav_SUMMER_FUN

I see that most of my Summer Fun images are in or around water, the sea.

A favourite area to be.

I ALWAYS enjoy watching children and adults having fun!

They were playing in the waves, and being boisterous.

Well boys will be boys, wonderful!

It was pure joy watching them and let so many memories echo around in my heart and soul.

I was a bit of a tomboy, i.e. my father had wanted a boy.

And, I raised three!

The three little girls were gathering seaweed.

They were testing the water first and tippy-toeing. Their giggles and laughter skating across the water and echoing off the walls, sheltering the beach in this bay.

The water was blue and limpid, the sun was caressingly warm, the sky was wide and clear.

Life can be so good! Summertime... and the living is easy...

Have a great day and thanks for your time and comments, much appreciated, M, (*_*)

Nuts, onion, Asparagus, Cobnuts, and A FRENCH AFFAIR! GARLIC ...

During our visit to the Continent, we drove through part of Northern France, we made a stop in St Omer, often the first stop inland for many visitors to France, a quiet, unassuming and attractive little town, 43km southeast of Calais.

We wanted to stretch our legs. Walked through the lovely shopping-streets with some beautiful old houses and got to the market square.

On the corner, we saw the most attractive fruit and veg shop, everything looking very fresh.

I saw plaits of fresh garlic... I chose one, walked inside to pay for it when I saw the cheese-counter, full of 'spécialitées de la région'...

I bought some of that too...

Although the garlic was wrapped in TWO bags, as was the cheese, and in the boot we had a zipped up 'cooling-bag' in which we stored our purchases...

From then on, each time we got into our car, we were greeted and treated by the pungent mixture of the combined 'fragrances!!!

What a laugh!

The cheese was delicious, the garlic... ahem, beautiful? (the guys in the studio weren't so impressed!)

FRIENDS... known him since 1964.

He arrived with a big hold-all filled with hats.

No, Not an actor, my friend is a painter who loves his headgear.

YVAN le FORTUNETELLER

Don't ask me where he got this hat from, but needless to say there was a lot of laughter going on.

As you see, he was very straight faced, telling me all the things that would happen in my future, none of which came true, except that I had found the love of my life, Paul and that there were other men in my life... indeed, my sons, and two fantastic male friends, one of which he was one...

You didn't have to be a clairvoyant, nor need a crystal ball to see that.

All the different hats also meant shifting the light settings, each time a new challenge, a new exercise.

Paul shot B&W, I did colour, all on film, Nikon F4

YVAN le TRAPPER, YVAN le TERRIBLE and YVAN the ASCETIC...

He spent a lot of time in France over the years.

As a young artist, he transformed a van into a camper van, drove all through Europe and North-Africa.

When he saw something inspiring, he’d climb on top of his van and paint until it was finished or dark.

In the South of France he encountered a French lady of the aristocracy, she taught him a lot about pigments, making your own paints, painting with your hands and palette knives.

He would tell me about the gorgeous smells of linseed oil, resin, right down to Indian cow’s urine.

A joy to have in the studio.

From the series: Ex- and impressions.

THANK YOU, M, (*_*)

I've painted for as long as I can remember.

I believe if you are a creative it is NEVER just in one field...

I photographed one of my paintings, 60x50, and inserted it; I was so surprised when it actually matched the colours on my palette!

I painted it from memory, a tour of Bretagne.

I had been most impressed with the rough rocky coasts, the often emerald waters, the ‘wildness’ of the place.

Some of the brushes I used belonged to my grandfather and father.

The painting is actually done completely with pallet-knife, my fave tool.

I painted with oils like this here, watercolours but I made hundreds of soft pastels.

I don't paint anymore now; I might again, one day, who knows?

My most creative period was when I had a lot of turmoil in my life, anger, sadness, disappointment and love.

I painted furiously day and night!

When that was gone, the photography kicked in again ad eventually took over.

I believe you have to be in a specific ‘state of mind’, plus, I must admit that over the years photography has satisfied my creative needs more and more.

PERMEKE'S PALETTE

Constant Permeke (1886 - 1952)

Biography: Born in Antwerp. Belgium.

Died Ostend.

Constant Permeke was a leading Expressionist painter in his home country during the period between World War I and World War II.

In 1914, he was severely injured and sent to England for recovery. Permeke returned to Belgium five years later, eventually building a home and studio in Jabbeke. His paintings normally depicted the aspects of life in a coastal town and portraits of fisherman.

He was a contemporary of Picasso.

After 1935, Permeke began creating sculpture as well.

Permeke's work was an extension of his personality. A giant, he worked in large studios on large canvases; even his drawings are large. His character was uncouth and quick-tempered yet gentle and generous.

He was direct and single-minded.

When he built his house in Jabbeke, just outside Bruges, it was very avant-garde.

It is now a permanent museum for his work.

On a visit, in his beautiful studio (atelier), the family have left it untouched, the huge unfinished painting on the easel; I photographed his palette with brushes, preserved in a glass tabletop display.

With all the reflections not the easiest photo to take, I included a small photo of one of his paintings, for those who are not familiar with his work.

Nikon F4

Of secrets and noses: Cuberdons

Belgium is known around the world for chocolate, waffles and beers, but my country is full of delightful secrets, Cuberdon is one of them.

In Flemish it is known as a neus (nose) or neuzeke (little nose) for its likeness to a human nose. In French, cuberdons are also called chapeau-de-curĂ© and chapeau-de-prĂȘtre (priest's hat).

Cuberdons are made with gum arabic. They are raspberry-flavoured and purple, though more recently differently coloured and flavoured variants have been available as well.

They are traditionally about 2,5 cm wide and weigh approximately 10 to 18 grammes, although smaller version are also commercialised.

The outside is relatively hard, whereas the inside is gooey, unctuous, pure sweet indulgence.

Cuberdons can only be preserved for about three weeks, after which period the inside begins to crystallise.

This limited preservability is the reason why cuberdons are not exported outside of Belgium.

There are two hypotheses about its origins:

Either a clergy member living in the country of Bruges created it - which would explain the term of "cleric's cap",[chapeau-de-prĂȘtre ] another name for it.

Or the Ghent pharmacist De Vynck in 1873 discovered the recipe of the cuberdon by chance. In order to increase the shelf life of drugs at the time, many were packaged in the form of syrup.

When the pharmacist examined a failed preparation after a few days, he found that it had formed a crust, while the core was still liquid. From this discovery came the idea to use such a technique to manufacture candy.

I always found them sickly sweet!

Lead a sweet life!

My neighbour grows this lovely vine... it is now absolutely delightful.

I brought some leaves into the studio and made a composition.

First thing you see of course are the colours in this grapevine leaf... but then the eye gets drawn in to the 'twine'...

I love the 'simple complexity' of this structure.

It reminds me so much of LIFE.

A great metaphor for it?

All through our lives, from birth we are surrounded, we form bonds, friendships, partnerships; some last
 some don’t...

I like to think of myself as very individualistic, but have wisely decided that we all need each other.

We are NOT meant to be solitaire!

I also see this image as a symbol of how, in a good relationship, you as a person, together with your partner, your lives become 'intertwined' and therefore so much stronger...

Soul-mates will feel themselves bonded together for a lifetime.

Having no permanent links, the denizen of our liquid modern society must tie whatever bonds they can to engage with others, using their wits, skill and dedication. But none of these links are guaranteed to last.

Moreover, they must be tied loosely so that they can be untied again, quickly and as effortlessly as possible, when circumstances change - as they surely will, over and over again.

The frailty of human links, the feeling of insecurity that frailty inspires, and the conflicting desires to tighten the bonds yet keep them loose, all make us more vulnerable.

Some of us are ‘loners’ either through choice or circumstances, but I don’t think that we were ever meant to be by ourselves, that we ‘operate’ better in a social context if we are not without any links.

When you have found the right person to form your ‘permanent’ link with, HOLD TIGHT, because it means STRENGTH!

Wishing you a wonderful day and as always, thank you for visiting, Magda, (*_*)

THORNWICK Bay...(pronounced Thornick... welcome to Yorkshire, lol)

Thornwick Bay derives its name from "Thor" the God of Thunder because of the roar of the breaking waves on the rocks during a North Easterly gale which pounds the magnificent cliffs.

In the winter when the winds are strong and the weather is bad, when the waves hit the rocks, foam and spray blows up the cliff and over the cafe, but thankfully most people come to visit in the Spring, Summer and Autumn months when the weather is much calmer, and people can sit on the cliff top and admire the fantastic scenery and watch the sun reflect off the brilliant white chalk cliffs which have been cleaned by the winter storms over thousands of years.

The stretch of water North of the Lighthouse was named 'the graveyard' by the skippers and crew of sailing vessels which once they had lost the safety of Bridlington Bay, and without the aids of navigation and weather forecasting which we now take for granted, were at the mercy of the angry weather.

Marine charts show hundreds of wrecks all within a few miles radius of Thornwick bay.

A great many people visit Thornwick Bay each year to enjoy wonderful cliff top walks observing the abundance of seabirds including Puffins, Guillemots and Kittiwakes etc.

On the 13th of December, in Sweden, the festivities of Lucia Day begin early in the morning, with costumed children bringing their parents breakfast in bed. But the holiday continues, with Lucia processions in schools, hospitals, offices, factories, even on flights.

There are also Lucia competitions, with young women vying to represent their community.

Perhaps the most spectacular of these takes place in Stockholm where the city's Lucia is crowned by the writer who three days earlier was awarded that year's Nobel Prize in Literature.

Symbolising the light of faith and the promise of the sun's return,

Santa Lucia has become a Swedish icon of winter, nearly as popular as Jultomte, the Swedish Santa Claus.

Exotic beauty in Bruges.

She was very noticeable, because of her looks, her headgear, but mostly her very groomed make-up and appearance.

In Western cultures, the ideal of feminine appearance has traditionally included long, flowing hair, light skin, a narrow waist, and little or no body hair or facial hair.

In other cultures, however, expectations are different.

For example, in many parts of the world, underarm hair is not considered unfeminine.

In contemporary Western culture thinness and femininity are linked, but in past eras heavy women were considered more feminine than thin ones.

Similarly, today the colour pink is strongly associated with femininity, whereas in the early 1900 pink was associated with boys and blue with girls.

Thank goodness THAt is changing again, and I see many men wearing Pink.

Thank you, M, (*_*)

The project was completed in 2000 at a cost of ÂŁ106 million.

One of five branches of the Imperial War Museum, it explores the impact of modern conflicts on people and society.

The museum occupies a site overlooking the Manchester Ship Canal on Trafford Wharf Road, Trafford Park.

The area is now home to the Lowry cultural centre and the MediaCityUK development, which stand opposite the museum at Salford Quays.

The museum building was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and opened in July 2002, receiving 470,000 visitors in its first year of opening.

Hanami (花芋, "flower viewing") is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers; flowers ("hana") are in this case almost always referring to those of the cherry ("sakura") or, less frequently, plum ("ume") trees.

...Amongst all the opulence, on the grass carpet, you could see that unfortunately people do not experience beauty in the same way, there were blossoms thrown all over the place, I saw two youngsters driving their bikes with their arms up, hitting every branch they could reach, leaving a trail of pink, they had fun...

I don't judge them, remember my own youth, we've all done silly stuff that now, but never anything like this, nothing destructive.

When you look or think back... you shake your head in disbelief... and sigh: why?

Because you are that age???

A broken off branch was left to wilt, I rescued it, it's adorning our dining room table now... not before I had photographed it in the studio, lol.

Whereas in China the cherry blossom symbolises feminine beauty, the feminine principle, or love in the language of herbs, in Japan the cherry blossoms are believed to exemplify the transient nature of life, because of their short blooming times.

Cherry blossoms also symbolise clouds due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life.

Take care, be safe!

The seniority of officers and non-commissioned officers is signified by the amount of lace worn on collars and cuffs; the more lace the more senior the rank.

The Pikemen & Musketeers are dressed and equipped as members of the Company would have been in the 1640s and are tasked with providing a ceremonial bodyguard for the Lord Mayor of the City of London and escorting him when he is on official business.

Company of Pikemen & Musketeers to parade no more than 63 members at any one time, that being the size of a company in the 17th century.

Only veteran members of the HAC who have had proven efficient service in the HAC’s Territorial Army regiment are eligible to join the Company of Pikemen & Musketeers.

All join in the lowest rank, regardless of any previous military rank held.

Members must be fit enough to competently complete the march of the Lord Mayor’s Show.

Military medals and insignia are permitted to be worn.

Members are unpaid but give freely of their own time for drill practice and rehearsals as well as the parades and guards themselves.

All make a significant contribution towards the cost of their own uniform and are expected to clean and look after their armour, muskets and other kit to maintain the highest standards of turnout for the many prestigious occasions they parade for.

MEET Mr. G...

I got a commission a few years ago, by the family of a gentleman, their father, to photograph a year in his garden.

So I would drive up the hills where he lived, on a regular basis.

Always lovely, as you will read on each image.

Some encounters leave you with long-lasting impressions.

I still think of it, with a little melancholy and emotion...

And that year was certainly one of them!

I loved each season.

What a splendid project!

And of course, as per usual, I could not resist some photos just for me...

From the first day I met him, he insisted I call him by his first name Ted, I never have, this tall gentleman impressed me so much with his polite manner and behaviour of a bygone era, I only call him Mr G.....

Now having lived in this house for over 50 years, it is HIS garden, and on our rounds, during the different seasons, he’d name me every tree, shrub, flower, not only that, he is able to tell you how, when and why he got them, some wonderful stories, the birth of his first daughter
a wedding anniversary, from a holiday to here or there

We exchanged quite a number of plants and cuttings, happy as kids in giving and receiving, sharing beauty!

I first photographed the shoes, in my waltz for the right composition, I noticed the chair with the cushion, by then he was back with a choice of biscuits from his larder, I asked him to come and sit for me, he did with great reluctance and head-shaking, protestation about his ‘gardening clothes’, not being dressed for the occasion, well, ok, then, don’t take too long!

Only when he saw the portrait did he understand he ‘needed’ to be in the album of ‘A year in the garden of
’

I saw the joy and the emotion in his and his family’s faces when they viewed it the first time, again, the importance of (portrait) photography, he?

Japanese old wooden houses.

We visited the whole neighbourhood, BEAUTIFUL!!!

Machiya are traditional wooden townhouses found throughout Japan.

This here is in Kanazawa.

Machiya or townhouses and nƍka (farm dwellings) constitute the two categories of Japanese vernacular architecture known as minka (folk dwellings).

Machiya originated as early as the Heian period and continued to develop through to the Edo period and even into the Meiji period.

Machiya housed urban merchants and craftsmen, a class collectively referred to as chƍnin (townspeople).

There is ONE from Brugge!

DNA profiling was developed in 1984 by British geneticist Sir Alec Jeffreys.

Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule composed of two polynucleotide chains that coil around each other.

DNA was first isolated by the Swiss physician Friedrich Miescher in 1869.

DNA contains the genetic information that allows all forms of life to function, grow and reproduce.

Forensic scientists can use DNA in blood, semen, skin, saliva or hair found at a crime scene to identify a matching DNA of an individual, such as a perpetrator.

This process is formally termed DNA profiling, also called DNA fingerprinting.

THE GOTHIC HALL

On our second day in Brugge, a bit cooler, we go out, and revisit one of my favourite places.

Having admired its exterior of the Town Hall, we enter the impressive Gothic Hall and gaze in awe at the polychrome floating ribs of the impressive double wooden vault ceiling.

Bruges' City Hall dates from 1376, was built in 55 years, and is one of the oldest in the Netherlands, a fine example, copied by many, like Brussels, Ghent, Leuven.

From here, the city has been governed for more than 600 years.

This Gothic Hall is an absolute must , a magnificent work of art with its murals from around 1900 and ornamentations.

The vault keys contain medallions and four lobes with scenes from the New Testament and of prophets, evangelists and saints.

The corbels that support the whole, are decorated with thematic representations of the seasons, months, and natural elements.

On the walls are scenes from the history of Bruges painted by artist Albrecht De Vriendt .

Like the monumental mantelpiece are these are neo-Gothic additions.

Each time I visit this awesome place, I fall silent, the stairs up to the hall are worn by millions of footsteps, including my ancestors, I can’t help but think of my grand-parents, my parents, they got married here, they walked here, they sat in front of the mantelpiece, here at that table, taking their legal vows, surrounded by their family, in all their finery..

You still get married here today!

I sit and dream awhile!

I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)
