CRANE PULLS WORLD a 30 degree TILT!!!!

Early morning sun, had photographed dawn since 4 in the morning when the sun came up, and I wandered down to the harbour to watch the shrimpers come in after a hard nights' work.

I know because I was privileged to experience such a night and making a reportage of it, but that's another story, see here:

A huge crane was swaying gently in the wind, the hook anchored to this bollard.

I smiled and saw the crane was pulling up the earth.

30 degrees?

Oohh, I almost forgot to tell you, uploaded this on April 1st, fool's day? LOL,

A bollard is a sturdy, short, vertical post.

The term originally referred to a post on a ship or quay used principally for mooring boats.

You can sit on it, or against them.

Found on different quaysides, high or low, think or thin, LOL

We had the pregnant mum in the studio first, then dad came with this little angelic tearaway...

To distract this little dolly, I got out this colourful Parrot, a prop we've had for years, you say something and the parrot repeats it 3 times, imitating whatever sound you made, or whatever you said... you can make it bark, miauw, moo...

We've had a lot of fun and laughter out of the silly thing...

However the girl was fascinated, it kept her busy for a while, while the parents were getting ready for the portrait session.

The studio was set before they came, she was totally spellbound by the parrot...so, bang, I got her!

I had to sphotograph her as she came, as not long ago she discovered the joy of running... she loved the studio, tripped over cables, got entangled in the bg, refused to sit, hihi, let alone pose?

She had a lot of fun, at the end of the session... I WAS KNACKERED,

But, I had the shots!

Lily of the Valley,

French: Muguet, lis des vallées

Dutch: Lelietjes van Dalen

Flemish: meiklokjes (Little BELLS OF MAY)

The flower is also known as 'Our Lady's tears' since, according to Christian legend; the lily of the valley came into being from Eve's tears after she was driven with Adam from the Garden of Eden.

According to another legend, Lilies of the Valley also sprang from the blood of Saint Leonard of Noblac during his battles with a dragon.

Other names include May Lily, May Bells, Lily Constancy, Ladder-to-Heaven, Male Lily and Muguet.

Lily of the Valley became the national flower of Finland in 1967.

The Norwegian municipality Lunner has a Lily of the Valley in its coat-of-arms.

It is also the official flowers of many fraternities and sororities.

... an erect low-growing perennial herb of the genus Convallaria (C. majalis) that has two large oblong lanceolate leaves and a raceme of fragrant nodding bell-shaped white flowers.

All parts of the Lily of the Valley are highly poisonous.

The first day of May in France and other European countries is La Fête du Travail (Labour Day). It is a holiday.

May 1 is also La Fête du Muguet, and the tradition is to give the ones you love a sprig of Muguet, for good luck and to celebrate the arrival of Spring.

I love browsing in Art-shops, the fragrance, the colours, EVERYTHING!

From when I could walk and since my father also painted, there were frequent visits...

That and books.

BIG FAVES where the colouring pencils that when you went over it with a wet painting brush, it became like a water-colour.

Just some more fun with pencils/props and lights in the studio, always the same... one idea sparks off another... I love being a creative, it is the spice of (my) life.

I cannot imagine 'not' having it...

I used recycled pencils for this image.

I cannot resist the, spotted a funky rubber to go with them, made the composition in my head, right there!

So colourful and attractive?

The child in me.

I still LOVE to write in pencil, it brings out my best handwriting!

The horse-breeder with his boxer dog, in good times and bad times.

Emiel had an accident, hand in the table saw.

His faithful dog like sensed the pain of his master and wanted to comfort him.

It mended well and a few months later, things were back to normal, however that bond stayed.

So many opportunities at the horse breeder.

THE SINGING RINGING TREE...

So, one day the weather was reasonable as was the light.

We decided to go on a Busman's holiday (A vacation during which one engages in activity that is similar to one's usual work.) LOL!

We drove towards the East Coast, into Lancashire, towards Manchester and Liverpool.

We had heard about The Singing Ringing Tree, part of The Panopticons, a visionary scheme to create a unique series of 21st century landmarks across East Lancashire, as symbols of the renaissance of the area.

The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered musical sculpture resembling a tree set in the landscape of the Pennine mountain range overlooking Burnley.

This musical element is created by the wind whistling through its 'branches', which are in fact galvanised steel pipes carefully tuned to ensure that the tree sings in harmony.

Eventually we found it, wanted the 'later light' anyway...

There was not that much wind, but now and than we did hear the haunting sounds:

Completed in 2006, it is part of the series of four sculptures within the Panopticons arts and regeneration project created by the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network (ELEAN).

Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu, the Singing Ringing Tree is a 3 metre tall construction comprising pipes of galvanised steel which harness the energy of the wind to produce a slightly discordant and penetrating choral sound covering a range of several octaves.

Some of the pipes are primarily structural and aesthetic elements, while others have been cut across their width enabling the sound.

The harmonic and singing qualities of the tree were produced by tuning the pipes according to their length by adding holes to the underside of each.

The New Little Belt Bridge (Nye Lillebæltsbro).

Getting closer to our destination, we cross a beautiful bridge.

The New Little Belt Bridge (Nye Lillebæltsbro) is a suspension bridge that crosses the Little Belt strait between Jutland (Jylland) and the island of Funen (Fyn) in Denmark.

The bridge is 1700 metres long, the main span is 600 metres, the pylons reaching a height of 120 metres, and the maximum clearance from the sea is 44 meters.

Opened:October 21, 1970, the bridge was constructed to alleviate congestion on the Old Little Belt Bridge due to the increasing car traffic between Jutland and Funen.

It is a motorway on the E20 bridge with three-lane carriageways as opposed to the single lanes of the old bridge.

The bridge has heating in the road deck, so it can be kept free of ice and snow in winter.

Passing through Little Belt Bridge is toll free… amazing.

AMUSEMENT.

In the bigger sea-side resorts, you will find, on the quayside, a fair, mostly for the children.

When visiting and the weather is just not good enough for the beach.

I think we all have been there?

Of course I chose the car! LOL

Closed in Winter, only left with the rides at the entrance of the amusement parks...

Great fun even for onlookers and photographers.

Table Mountain has its own cloud cover (the Tablecloth), forming rapidly when the wind is in the southeast and is mainly responsible for the lush plateau vegetation.

Table Mountain’s ‘tablecloth’ is an orographic cloud formation (clouds that develop in response to the forced lifting of air by the earth’s topography).

As a south-easterly wind blowing up the mountain slopes meets colder air at higher altitude, condensation takes place and a thick mist soon coats the top-most regions of the mountain.

As the cloud-cover pours over the side of the mountain, the process is reversed. Clouds encounter warmer air layers lower down, where the moisture evaporates, making the clouds disappear.

Despite its undeniable beauty, the tablecloth can be dangerous to unwary hikers.

The cloud often descends rapidly, obscuring visibility and posing a threat to hikers unfamiliar with the mountain.

This is a view taken from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in the historic heart of Cape Town's working harbour and South Africa's most-visited destination, having the highest rate of foreign tourists of any attraction in the country.

Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, began construction of the harbour in 1860.

The first basin was named after himself, the second after his mother, hence the name.

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront development is a renewal project that incorporates much of the historic harbour infrastructure.

As you can see, the weather cadges very fast sometimes.

One of the important rituals when visiting a shrine in Japan takes place at the water purification fountain, known as the chozuya or temizuya next to the entrance.

Worshippers use ladles called hishaku to scoop up water to wash their hands and sometimes their mouths.

Due to the pandemic, many ladles have been removed from shrines and temples as a safety precaution.

Some people feared the custom was in danger of dying out.

March, coming, the beauty that surrounds us in everything for those willing to see.

I decided to upload a series of landscapes, gathered over the years. Mostly in the UK.

Most of them have never seen the light of day, because my flower photography has overtaken my world somewhat.

And much as I love it, my ‘other’ photography is as important to me.

So, here goes.

A sultry and hot Summer's day, light quite flat.

The lone tree on the top of the ridge of the hill did not look particularly big or strong, it wasn’t even leaning, no winds had bent it although this was quite near the coast of the North Sea, but no, still standing straight!

I often feel like that tree...

Taken at a Dance Hall, where more mature people gather in the afternoon and come to dance...

...This lady, one of the first to arrive at the dance hall, was well liked and cherished.

She was obviously just there to see and enjoy her friends dancing.

I had already taken several shots, and sat down on the side to absorb the whole atmosphere; when out of the corner of my eye I saw movement.

The one foot was moving with the tune, the stick tapping the beat, the rest of her body still, her face ecstatic.

I wondered where she was in her memories, for a moment I saw the young girl emerging, a youthfulness in her shining eyes.

The music stopped, applause, her shoulders sagged a bit; she leant a bit more heavily on her stick.

So, some views from our room in Brugge, next to one of the most famous places and canals, and other places.

Brugge by day is beautiful, by night it becomes MAGIC.

Special lighting seems to take you back through the ages, the shadows protecting those who lived there.

That is when my imagination runs away with me again...

My city is always interesting, day or night.

Visited by lovers and people from all over the world.

We do it every year -- put up the tree, decorate the house with lights and pull out the Christmas napery.

Once again the Germans stepped up in the decoration invention department.

Baubles were first invented in Lauscha, by local man Hans Greiner, who first manufactured them in the late 1840s.

The first baubles were fruit and nut shaped glass, eventually turning into a more spherical shape.

Britain’s Queen Victoria was said to be quite taken with the tradition of baubles and brought them from Germany to Europe in the mid to late 1800s.

American retailer F.W. Woolworth made his fortune by importing baubles into the country in 1880.

By 1890, he was reportedly selling $25 million worth a year.

At first, baubles were only for wealthy people as they were hand-crafted and made of glass.

But it wasn’t long before a plastic version was made, allowing cheaper manufacturing and affordability for everyone.

And now, like so many things, there is a revival of the glass ones.

I photographed some in the Salt's Mill Christmas tree.

It is required that you keep the original packaging of anything that you buy for as long as it is under guarantee…

So, we had quite a number of empty boxes in our attic!

From camera and computer-stuff!

Emptied it for our move to our new house and discovered this!

EMPTY! A wasp’s nest.

We knew we had them at some point, but they didn’t come into the house itself, so we left it alone.

I had never seen this!

It is fragile (broke in half when we tried to remove it from under a beam), feather-light and paper-thin!

Beautiful and delicate, I could not resist photographing it in MACRO!

Here are some interesting facts:

The queen will build her nest with a papery material that she makes by chewing small pieces of wood and she mixes these with saliva to form a kind of papier-mâché.

There is a difference in the nest of the tree wasp.

The papery outside is usually a dark grey whereas the common wasp will be beige.

The queen commences the nest by producing a golf ball sized sphere inside which she constructs a series of about 16 to 20 cells into which she lays eggs.

About 7 days later the eggs hatch into grubs, the queen will catch insects and feed them to the grubs.

When each has fed until it is full it seals its self into the cell.

In the nest she will raise a few workers and these will start to enlarge the nest and help to rear the next generation of wasps.

Nest construction starts in earnest in June and will usually reach its maximum in size in September, but may not end until late November if the conditions are right.

If lots of wasps and other insects are seen on shrubbery or flowers it is most likely that they are simply feeding there.

A treatment is not required in such circumstances, as it would only kill the wasps that are present at the time.

The size of wasp colonies will vary from year to year, but at its maximum nests may contain between 5 – 10,000 wasps.

The big cube is a table in our living room, I just love glass and light, the distortions, the glows.

The other two glass cubes, I use for many things, a vase ets....

Once I got going in the studio, there was no stopping me.

But what I tried to do was, each time, create a completely DIFFERENT image with the same subject.

Different lights give different hues on film, this came out more yellow, but I didn’t feel like removing the colourcast, liked it as it was.

Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did making them.

ABOUT THE PORTRAIT in PHOTOGRAPHY...

Photography is a powerful medium.

Too often underestimated, yet it is the perfect recording of our history, forever changing lifestyles, the all important memories...

Cameras only the tools of the trade, note I write 'cameras', no distinction, it is my firm conviction that it is the person using the tools that is responsible for the result.

An often neglected form of art in photography is that of portrait photography.

What is perceived as a good portrait photographer not only wants to capture the true likeness, but also the personality of the individual.

The photographer needs to be proficient not only in the workings and setting of the camera, but also needs to understand form and lighting.

Great lighting and positioning can make someone appear at their best form if used correctly.

Lighting and camera placement can also aid in correcting defects such as shortening a nose, making someone appear slimmer, and other visual enhancements.

In this form of art, portrait photography takes on many roles, and can help create various moods that the individual is seeking.

Like in everything else, there’s ever changing TREND.

You only have to look at the family/school/wedding portrait of 50-20 years ago!!!!!!!!

A dynamic portrait like the above, would not have been possible, everything had to be neatly 'all-in', best clothes, a visit to the hairdresser, from a respectable distance, ‘décor’ background and props.

I like the way it's going, but it's taken some time...

I believe we have become too obsessed with the 'technicality' of the manipulation rather than with the content of the pictures.

Personally, if a photograph touches me, that is the first criterion!

Unfortunately I must admit, if it has been 'massacred' with some software, that rapidly takes away ALL emotions except, GGGGRRRRRR, hihi,

Anybody (hate the question) who asks me: 'and, what do you photograph?' makes me think, my answer would be the BEAUTY in everything?

However I must admit, portraiture may be the most difficult discipline, I find it also the most rewarding!

On Yorkshire Moors, up the Pennines, The Saddleworth Brass Band Festival takes place on the Friday following the Whitsuntide bank holiday each year.

Delph is one of several villages visited by competing bands from across the country.

It is a very festive occasion!

A good day for the pubs (~:*) and 'fast-food sellers'...

It was already close to 'darkness', they had been playing and parading for quite some time, a thirsty business, it was starting to show!

It is a well-known fact that England is a land of traditions and proudly so!

Due to the faster pace and changes in the current times, many are finding it harder to keep going.

One of the important rituals when visiting a shrine in Japan takes place at the water purification fountain, known as the chozuya or temizuya next to the entrance.

Worshippers use ladles called hishaku to scoop up water to wash their hands and sometimes their mouths.

Due to the pandemic, many ladles have been removed from shrines and temples as a safety precaution.

Some people feared the custom was in danger of dying out.

CRATAEGUS ROSEA, DARK and PINK Hawthorn, so very MAY!

On our way to the Coast, the roads East were lined with blossoming hedges of Hawthorn, mostly white the branches were heavily cascading, it was like driving through a garden, very beautiful and peaceful, we mostly leave later, behind all the traffic, because we are after the 'later' light anyway... when most are going home...

We passed a few pink hawthorns and I could not resist bringing home this branch.

It suffered a bit, but once home I submerged it in water for a while, cut widely open the woody branch, put it in water and photographed it the next morning.

We had the pregnant mum in the studio first, then dad came with this little angelic tearaway...

To distract this little dolly, I got out this colourful Parrot, a prop we've had for years, you say something and the parrot repeats it 3 times, imitating whatever sound you made, or whatever you said... you can make it bark, miauw, moo...

We've had a lot of fun and laughter out of the silly thing...

However the girl was fascinated, it kept her busy for a while, while the parents were getting ready for the portrait session.

The studio was set before they came, she was totally spellbound by the parrot...so, bang, I got her!

I had to sphotograph her as she came, as not long ago she discovered the joy of running... she loved the studio, tripped over cables, got entangled in the bg, refused to sit, hihi, let alone pose?

She had a lot of fun, at the end of the session... I WAS KNACKERED,

But, I had the shots!
