Union Pacific's MRONY 22 manifest freight ascends the 2% grade through the horseshoe above Gilluly, Utah the morning of Aug. 22, 2008. In seven additional miles, the train will stop at Soldier Summit, and the manned helpers will be cut out of the train, running light to Helper Yard where they will tie up.
Presence
High Peaks Wilderness, NY
I make the steep climb up Mt Jo on the short trail to be in time for sunrise, a somewhat treacherous exercise on that trail by the light of a headlamp. This first objective fizzles behind a socked in horizon, farther east and behind more foliage than I had expected. So now I wait for the vista south, wondering when the partly sunny forecast will begin. Below me is a dull expanse of Adirondack autumn, with ascending ridge lines disappearing into the gloom. The presence of great mountains makes me more introspective, I think. I often imagine the specter of people near to my heart in these idle minutes away from the domestic grind, remembering moments and invoking a word, a touch, or a smile. Lost in the nearness of you I am almost startled when the sky breaks open from the east, and a waterfall of light pours across the basin. This is what I’m here for, and I turn to the task until it’s gone, closed again behind the stratocumulus. I gather to leave for other adventures, but for a few moments I might bask in the aura you leave behind.
This one's been sitting in my "to edit" folder for the past few months. I'm not sure why it took me so long to get around to editing this image... because now that I have, I'm rather enchanted by it.
Actually, the reason I chose today to edit this image is because I'm working on my 2010 calendar, and was wondering if this image had calendar-potential. I suppose we shall see. ;-)
Taken with my Zero Image 2000.
Wishing you all an upwards walk towards a brighter future.

We drove up this narrow road flanked by dead trees, towards the summit of Mount Oyama. A stark legacy of the 2000 eruption, when sulfuric gases emptied the island of its inhabitants and left these once-green slopes as a graveyard of trees.

A lone pedestrian climbs to the top of a staircase, water bottle in hand. Did she just come from a work out? Is she going to Nando's? We'll never know.

A Canadian trio (U, W, U) lifts their fresh U-Tac loads up the Hill into Culver as Fall is definitely falling upon the Northland. Went out for a tiny while as the sun was out and a big drive back to Wisco was in order later, and managed at least one decent frame as 6021 takes center stage.

As we drove further up the volcano, a dense mist descended. The remains of these petrified trees piercing through the mist gave a wonderfully eerie feeling. In the end the visibility was so bad we had to turn back.
Image from an accidental archive. I don't go out of my way to save original scans or raw files -- or negatives, for that matter, though they tend to linger. I found this on an old PC's drive while prepping recycling. I remember shooting the Hasselblad 500CM this day, with either Portra or Ektar. Jessie might have this negative saved in a book somewhere.
Anyway, wishing all a fine butt-end of the week.
