Chau dance an acrobatic martial danc e form of Purulia. It has been already enlisted in the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Huminity.Chau is indegenous part of Eastern India. It originated as a martial art and contains vigorous movements and leaps. The barren land Purulia with its tribal inhabitants and multilayered influences of vedic literature, Hinduism and Martial Folk-lore have all combined to shape the PURULIA CHAU DANCE which has only one message - The triumph of good over evil.
The Purulia Chau dancers wear large stylized masks while performing chau dance. The Chau Mask is traditionally associated with this age old dance form of Purulia, where the performers wear masks of different mythological characters and also different animals.
The masks are made from paper pulp, mud and clay. First the outline shape on the mud is created. then the ultimate shape of the muddy layer is given with the wooden structure. After drying that under the sun it is covered with the white ash dust layer before the pulp paper layering with the glue. It helps to remain separated after drying of the paper laye under the sun. The Hard paper layer with a thin mud layer on it is painted in attractive shades with the acrylic colours usually brought from the Barabazar area of Kolkata. – Noah Purifoy, 1963
Born in Snow Hill, Alabama in 1917, Noah Purifoy lived and worked most of his life in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, California, where he died in 2004. He received an undergraduate degree from Alabama State Teachers College in 1943 and a graduate degree from Atlanta University in 1948. In 1956, just shy of his 40th birthday, Purifoy earned a BFA degree from Chouinard, now CalArts.
His earliest body of sculpture, constructed out of charred debris from the 1965 Watts rebellion, was the basis for 66 Signs of Neon, the landmark 1966 group exhibition on the Watts riots that traveled throughout the country. As a founding director of the Watts Towers Art Center, Purifoy knew the community intimately. His 66 Signs of Neon, in line with the postwar period’s fascination with the street and its objects, constituted a Duchampian approach to the fire-molded alleys of Watts. This strategy profoundly impacted artists such as David Hammons, John Outterbridge and Senga Nengudi. For the 20 years that followed the rebellion, Purifoy dedicated himself to the found object, and to using art as a tool for social change.
In the late 1980s, after 11 years of public policy work for the California Arts Council, where Purifoy initiated programs such as Artists in Social Institutions, which brought art into the state prison system, Purifoy moved his practice out to the Mojave desert. He lived for the last 15 years of his life creating ten acres full of large-scale sculpture on the desert floor. Constructed entirely from junked materials, this otherworldly environment is one of California’s great art historical wonders.

Jessica Hess's "It finds You" opened to huge throngs of fans and patrons who came out to see the artist's latest body of work displayed at White Walls Gallery. Featuring beautifully rendered large scale oil works, the show also highlighted her recent collaboration with sculptor Christa Assad. The show was simply spectacular, and we suggest everyone check it out. It shows the amazing work that can be produced when an artist locks oneself in their studio for a year, which was very true in Jessica's case.

Dutch artist Scarlett Hooft Graafland produces her work in remote locations where the inhabitants have been forced to adapt to the natural conditions rather than the other way around.
It is not about being where only very few people have been before, but about discovering an authenticity in a space, which often means that beauty and wonder simply combine into fantastic images.
Scarlett comments, "I am filled with nostalgia for places where people are very close to nature. Places where people have barely interfered with nature. The wonder of nostalgia for places you have never been to. The wonder of creating situations that have never existed before and will probably never exist again. Situations that are possible but very unlikely to occur again. Magic realism."
